The Heath Ledger Scholarship: Empowering Emerging Australian Actors

Introduction

The Heath Ledger Scholarship (HLS) stands as a beacon of opportunity for emerging Australian actors, providing them with the resources and support necessary to establish themselves in the competitive landscape of the United States entertainment industry. Established in 2008 in honor of the late Academy Award® winner Heath Ledger, the scholarship aims to bridge the gap for actors who have already achieved a level of success in Australia and aspire to expand their careers internationally.

The Scholarship's Mission and Impact

The Heath Ledger Scholarship serves as an exciting and potentially life-changing opportunity for its finalists. By boosting their profile and introducing them to a valuable network of industry professionals, the scholarship helps actors connect with agents, managers, and other key figures who can support them throughout their careers. The HLS Finalists' List has also emerged as an important international and local industry reference tool for highlighting Australian talent to watch.

Kate Ledger, Heath’s sister and AiF Board member, has emphasized that "The objective of the scholarship is to ‘smooth the way’ and ‘open doors’ allowing the recipient to focus all their energy and efforts on getting work."

Eligibility and Application Process

The Heath Ledger Scholarship is open to young and emerging Australian actors between the ages of 18 and 35. The selection process is highly competitive, with a large number of applications received each year. In 2021, for example, the scholarship received a record-breaking 600 applications.

The applications are reviewed by leading Australian and US Casting Directors, who narrow down the field to a select group of finalists. These finalists then undergo further evaluation based on their auditions and applications, where they articulate what receiving the HLS would mean to them.

Australians in Film's Role

Australians in Film (AiF), a non-profit organization that serves as the industry guild for Australian entertainment professionals in Los Angeles, plays a vital role in administering the Heath Ledger Scholarship. Founded in May 2001, AiF provides a range of programs and services to support Australian actors in the US, including regular screenings, career development programs, seminars, and labs.

AiF also fosters a strong sense of community among its members, providing a valuable network for Australian actors to connect with each other and with industry professionals. Benefactors of the Heath Ledger Scholarship include prominent figures such as Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, Hugh Jackman, Deborra-Lee Furness, Alex O’Loughlin, Liam Hemsworth, Michelle Williams, Phil Noyce, Baz Luhrmann, and Catherine Martin, highlighting the scholarship's importance within the Australian entertainment community.

Matt Levett: A Recent Recipient's Story

Australian actor Matt Levett was named the seventh recipient of the Australians in Film Heath Ledger Scholarship. Levett, whose credits in Australia include the popular series "A Place Called Home" and the award-winning mini-series "Devil’s Playground," had always been inspired by Heath Ledger. “One of my favorite films is Two Hands, where he started out, but he was one of those guys who went over to the States and was a pioneer for the future generation, establishing Australian actors in Los Angeles,” he added. “Now there are just so many and I think that’s primarily because of him and a handful of other actors who blazed the trail.

As the winner, Levett received the scholarship package. He planned to stay in Los Angeles and take advantage of the resources and profile the scholarship brought him. “My dream is to be working on great projects but also to aim for that consistency of work,” he added.
