The Terry Foundation Scholarship is a "last-dollar" scholarship, meaning that the scholarship funds are applied after all other sources of financial aid, such as grants and other scholarships, have been exhausted. The scholarship is designed to cover the full cost of attendance for up to eight semesters of undergraduate education, effectively providing a full ride. This encompasses tuition, fees, books, and reasonable on-campus living expenses. Variable stipends are awarded based on the university’s official on-campus Cost of Attendance and other financial awards received by the Scholar for each academic year (including scholarships, grants, waivers, savings plans, etc.).

To be eligible for the Traditional Scholarship, applicants must:

Enroll as an incoming freshman at one of the Terry-affiliated universities in the fall semester immediately following graduation.

Important Note: The Terry Foundation Scholarship is intended to fund enrollment for face-to-face courses taught in-person and requires Scholars to physically attend class on their Terry-affiliated university campus.

Ineligibility: DACA or undocumented students are not eligible to apply directly. However, the Terry Foundation encourages these students to seek assistance from programs or foundations that work directly with DACA or undocumented students, such as TheDream.Us.

Partner Universities

The Terry Foundation partners with a select group of public universities in Texas. Applications for the scholarship are handled by each individual university. Students must apply through the school, and their applications are reviewed alongside their base application for admission.

The application process varies depending on the specific university. Generally, applicants must:

The Interview Process

A panel interview is a crucial part of the selection process. Applicants are interviewed by a panel of six current and former Terry Scholars who ask questions about their background, experiences, and aspirations. The interview is designed to be an informal conversation, lasting approximately 30 minutes. Applicants are encouraged to dress professionally for the interview. Interviews with the Terry Foundation are held in late March to early-April. Multiple interview committees work simultaneously in El Paso, Houston, and Dallas over a two-week period in late March/ early April.

Life as a Terry Scholar

Traditional Scholarship recipients are required to live on campus, in the Terry-designated residence hall, for their freshman year. (At Texas Tech University, Terry Scholars® live in Murray Hall during their first year). After their first year, Traditional Scholarship recipients can live off campus if they wish to do so.

Terry Scholars are expected to maintain a 2.5 GPA overall and a 2.0 GPA each semester. They are also expected to attend the annual Terry fall banquet and the annual Terry Scholar picnic.(Current Texas Tech University Terry Scholars® should refer to the Foundation Scholar Handbook . The handbook is also distributed at the Terry Foundation® Scholar Orientation each Fall semester).

Terry Scholar Alumni maintain active ties to the Foundation after graduation and assist current Scholars in many capacities.
