Early History and the Transition to Four-Year Status
John Tarleton College opened its doors on September 4, 1899, with W. H. Bruce as president. The institution underwent several changes in its early years, including changes in leadership. William Herschell Bruce served as President from 1899 to 1900, followed by President Bramlett from 1900 to 1906. Frank M. Martin (1906-1908), J.D. Sandefer (1908-1909), Elzy Dee Jennings (1909-1911), George J. Nunn (1911-1912), Roswell W. Rogers (1912-1913), James Duncan Hughlett (1913), and James Franklin Cox (1913-1919) subsequently held the position.
During this period, John Tarleton College became a junior college academy program. It later became part of The Texas A&M University System, and its name changed to John Tarleton Agricultural College. James Thomas Davis served as president from 1919 to 1947. In 1947, John Tarleton Agricultural College became known as Tarleton State College to reflect the liberal arts offerings.
Before Tarleton became a four-year institution in 1961, its teams were known as the "Plowboys".
Mascots and Nicknames
The university's athletic identity has evolved over time. The "Plowboys" mascot was adopted after Coach W.J. Wisdom held a contest for a new mascot but ultimately came up with the name himself. Later, the "Texans" and "TexAnns" mascots were adopted, with a horse and rider becoming the new athletic mascot of the university.

The first TSU women's varsity teams, introduced in 1968-69, played under the "Texans" nickname. However, due to female athletes' wish to play under a distinctive nickname, the school changed it the following school year, though a consistent spelling was not immediately adopted-"Texanns", "Tex-Anns", and "TexAnns" were used interchangeably until 1972-73, when "TexAnns" was officially settled on. During the 2018-19 school year, two players and a student manager in the women's basketball program started a campaign to change the women's nickname back to "Texans". By 2019, all Tarleton athletic teams united as "Texans."
