Navigating KSU Summer Semester Courses: A Comprehensive Guide

This article provides a comprehensive guide to navigating summer semester courses at Kennesaw State University (KSU), covering registration procedures, important dates, financial aid, housing, and other essential information for students.

Understanding Registration Errors and Troubleshooting

Registering for courses can sometimes be challenging. Here's how to troubleshoot common registration errors:

  • Block Scheduling: Sections beginning with ‘B’ are for students participating in Block Scheduling, with reserved seats for incoming first-year students and unreserved seats for all other students. Non-block students should look for other sections if they see the “reserved closed” error.
  • General Troubleshooting: If you encounter other issues, try logging out and logging back into the Student Information System.
  • Campus Restriction Error: This error occurs for Online Learner students attempting to register for a main campus course. The solution is to register for online courses only or select a different course.
  • Closed Course Overrides: Closed course overrides are available only during the drop/add period.
  • Learning Communities: To register for courses within a Learning Community, follow the specific instructions provided.
  • Prerequisites: Ensure you meet the course prerequisites. You can check prerequisites by finding the course in the Student Information System and clicking on Class Search at the bottom of the page, then clicking on the Course Title.
  • Repeat Count Exceeds: The REPEAT COUNT EXCEEDS 1 error occurs when a student has exceeded the number of attempts allowed to repeat a course.
  • Cohort Restrictions: Some courses are reserved for students in a particular cohort, such as Honors College (H sections), Advanced Major Program (M sections), or New Students at Orientation (N sections).

Key Registration Considerations

  • Science Courses with Labs: When registering for a science course that requires a lab, both the lecture and lab courses must be registered for successfully at the same time.
  • Duplicate Courses: Students cannot register for the same subject and course number twice.
  • Permission to Enroll: Some courses require permission to enroll. Contact the relevant department or instructor to obtain permission to enroll into this course.

Course Load Limits

  • Fall and Spring Semesters: A student may register for up to 18 hours. The Registrar may approve up to 21 hours for students with an institutional GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Summer Term: A student may register for up to 13 hours. The Registrar may approve up to 15 hours for students with an institutional GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students not in good academic standing will be limited to 13 hours during any term.

Important Dates and Deadlines

Stay informed about critical dates throughout the semester:

  • Registration Deadlines: Be aware of the deadlines for registering for courses.
  • Holidays: Note the university holidays.
  • Start and End of Classes: Keep track of the first and last day of classes.
  • Final Exam Schedule: Access the official final exam schedule to plan your end-of-semester exams.
  • Course Withdrawals and Refunds: Learn the deadlines for course withdrawals and refund eligibility.

Summer Study Abroad

Consider expanding your academic horizons with a summer study abroad experience. Plan ahead to ensure you meet all application requirements and deadlines.

New Student Orientation

Student Orientation is required for all new undergraduate first-year students, including transfer students and international students. Once you are accepted, you can sign up for a New Student Orientation session. Fall 2025 semester sign-ups open December 2, 2024. Once accepted, you’ll be able to meet with an academic advisor prior to Orientation.

Parking

You can complete your parking sign-up 24 hours after you register for classes. For an early orientation date so you can selection your parking area earlier.

Financial Aid

  • FAFSA: You are encouraged to complete the FAFSA as early as possible to allow ample time to plan for your college expenses. The FAFSA is typically available starting on October 1 each year.
  • Monitoring Communications: Be sure to monitor communications from KSU's Financial Aid Office for the latest information.
  • Financial Aid Counselors: Once financial aid awards are posted, you can contact your assigned financial aid counselor for additional guidance and assistance. Financial aid counselors are assigned based on the first letter of a student’s last name.

Housing

New students can apply for housing after they’re accepted into KSU. Once accepted, you can apply as soon as the 2025-26 Housing Application opens, which is typically around Dec. 2. Students are issued time tickets for Room Selection in April based on the date their application fee is paid. The earlier you apply for housing and pay your application fee, the better chance you’ll have of getting your preferred housing location and floor plan. Some Special Interest Housing, like KSU Journey Honors Housing, fill even earlier than others. See Housing and Residence Life for First Year and Transfer Students.

KSU Journey Honors College

Incoming freshmen indicate an interest in KSU's Journey Honors College by filling out the related sections of KSU's CommonApp. The priority deadline for Honors scholarships is Feb. 1, 2025.
