Claudia Conway College: A Look at Notable Alumni

This article explores the achievements and contributions of notable alumni from Claudia Conway College, highlighting their impact across various fields.

The Affirmative Action Ruling and Claudia Conway's Reaction

Claudia Conway, daughter of Donald Trump's former counselor Kellyanne Conway, has voiced her strong disapproval of the Supreme Court's ruling on affirmative action. The SCOTUS decision, which struck down affirmative action admissions policies in colleges nationwide, marks a significant reversal. Chief Justice John Roberts, in his opinion, stated that the universities' policies violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. The court's three liberal judges dissented.

The ruling favored Students for Fair Admissions, a conservative group that filed lawsuits against Harvard and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). The group argued that the affirmative action practices at these institutions discriminated against white and Asian American applicants, while favoring Black and Latino students.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a Harvard alumna, recused herself from the Harvard case but participated in the UNC case. The verdicts were 6-2 in the Harvard case and 6-3 in the UNC case.

The ruling has sparked both celebration and criticism from opposing political sides. Some critics have pointed out that legacy admissions remain untouched. They argue that continuing legacy admissions while striking down affirmative action could widen the gap between the privileged and everyone else.

Claudia Conway, 18, expressed her outrage at the decision in a series of tweets, questioning why BIPOC students are now being denied opportunities they deserve, especially considering historical discrimination. She also criticized legacy admissions, questioning why they are still in place if affirmative action is deemed unlawful.

Legacy Admissions: A Closer Look

Colleges described as highly selective in their admissions processes were more prone to providing advantages for legacy students. According to a report, 80 percent of the 64 four-year colleges and universities that admit less than 25 percent of applications were found to provide advantages for legacy students.

Private institutions, particularly those in the northeastern part of the country, were more likely to accept legacy students. A 2018 survey by Inside Higher Ed found that 42 percent of private schools considered legacy status in admissions, compared to about 6 percent at public institutions.

Harvard, which was in the spotlight due to these cases, had an approximate 33 percent acceptance rate for legacy applicants between 2010 and 2015, compared to a 6 percent overall acceptance rate. This means that the acceptance rate for legacy applicants was about 5.7 times higher than for non-legacy applicants.

A 2020 report by the Wall Street Journal showed a slight decrease in the consideration of legacy applicants, with 56 percent of the nation's top 250 institutions considering them, down from 63 percent in 2004.

Potential Impacts of Striking Down Affirmative Action

Proponents of affirmative action have warned that striking it down could have devastating impacts on access to education. California, which banned race-based admissions in 1996, serves as an example. Since Proposition 209 passed, enrollment numbers for African American and Latino students have not recovered to pre-1996 levels.

Colleges had already been ordered to narrowly apply affirmative action, with previous Supreme Court rulings prohibiting quotas and requiring schools to consider factors like test scores and extracurricular activities.

Public Opinion on Affirmative Action

Recent polls suggest that the Supreme Court's ruling may be a popular decision. June polls found that a majority of Republicans and Democrats opposed affirmative action, preferring merit-based admissions processes instead.
