History of the Student Union Building
The idea of constructing a student union building at San Jose State University dates back to 1927. In 1936, the school gained ownership of the Main Carnegie Library from the City of San Jose and repurposed it into its Student Union.
Following the demolition of the Carnegie Library, the Associated Students of San Jose State University drafted a ballot measure in November 1963 to construct a new student union for the school. The measure proposed a $5.5 million bond (equivalent to $58,000,000 in 2025), to be repaid through an annual student fee of $20. The ballot measure garnered a record 9,134 votes, with the proposal for the student union exceeding the required two-thirds majority.

In October 1964, the architectural contract for the building was awarded to Ernst J. Kump. Construction was completed in 1969, and students chose to name the meeting rooms in honor of the Native American and Hispanic heritage of the student body.
Renovation and Expansion
In 2010, the university initiated an $89 million renovation (equivalent to $131,000,000 in 2025) of the Student Union, as the existing space no longer met the needs of the growing student population. The architectural firm Perkins&Will was chosen to carry out the project, which involved adding wings to both ends of the building, increasing the floor area by 104,000 square feet.
Design and Architecture
The original Student Union building dates to the early 1960s and was designed by Bay Area modernist Ernest Kump as a cast concrete monument to student life. The additions were designed to respectfully connect to the original building using neutral glass “buffer” zones on the east and west. The use of concrete on the additions complements the original building. The new addition’s language of glass, metal wall panel, and rainscreen is woven through sections of the Kump building within the concrete frame, tying the old and new designs together. The new wings on the east and west add lightness and transparency to the building's composition, using the existing cast concrete structure as a visual anchor.
