The Academic Journey of Catherine, Princess of Wales: From St Andrews to Royal Life
The British royal family, a symbol of the United Kingdom, has seen a shift in the educational backgrounds of its members over time. In contrast to past traditions where royals primarily focused on royal duties after basic schooling, recent generations have increasingly pursued higher education. Catherine, Princess of Wales, exemplifies this modern trend.
A Royal Education: Breaking with Tradition
Historically, royal family members often bypassed university education. However, this pattern has changed, with many contemporary royals pursuing degrees in higher education. Charles III was the first UK monarch to achieve a university degree. He attended Trinity College at the University of Cambridge, where he studied anthropology, archaeology and history. He also spent a term at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, (now Aberystwyth University) where he studied Welsh and the history of the principality. He was also part of Trinity’s drama group, the Dryden Society, and appeared in two of the society’s annual productions. The Prince of Wales studied at the University of St Andrews, in Fife, Scotland, where he initially pursued a degree in art history before switching to geography in his second year. Prince William graduated with a Master of Arts, earning a 2:1. Other members of the royal family who attended university include:
- Princess Beatrice, the daughter of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, studied history and the history of ideas at Goldsmiths, University of London.
- Princess Eugenie, Beatrice’s younger sister, attended Newcastle University, where she studied a combined honours degree in art history, English literature and politics.
- Peter Phillips, the eldest son of Anne, the Princess Royal, attended the University of Exeter and graduated with a degree in sports science.
- Zara Tindall, Peter Phillips’ sister, also attended the University of Exeter, where she studied physiotherapy.
- Prince Edward, the late Queen Elizabeth's youngest son, followed in his older brother's footsteps and attended the University of Cambridge.
- Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, studied theatre and international studies at Northwestern University.
Catherine's Early Life and Education
Born Catherine Elizabeth Middleton on 9 January 1982, in Reading, Catherine grew up in Bucklebury, Berkshire. Her parents, Michael and Carole Middleton (née Goldsmith), were both employed by British Airways. Catherine's early education began at St Andrew's School, followed by Marlborough College, before she embarked on her university studies.
University Years at St Andrews
In 2001, Catherine Middleton enrolled at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where she pursued a degree in history of art. This decision would prove to be a pivotal moment in her life, as it was here that she first met Prince William. During their time at university, they were students in residence at St Salvator's Hall. She reportedly caught William's eye at a charity fashion show at the university in 2002. The couple began dating in 2003. During their second year, Middleton shared a flat with William and two friends. From 2003 until 2005, they both resided at Balgove House on the Strathtyrum estate with two roommates. They began staying at a cottage on the Balmoral estate known as Tam-Na-Ghar, which was a gift from Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother to William shortly before her death. Kate Middleton graduated in 2005. While at university, Prince William played water polo and met his wife, Kate Middleton.
Life After Graduation
After graduating, Catherine worked part-time as an accessory buyer at the clothing chain Jigsaw and for her family’s party planning business until she married Prince William in 2011. She held several jobs and pursued charity work before their engagement was announced in November 2010.

Marriage and Royal Life
Middleton and William became engaged in October 2010, at a remote alpine cabin on Mount Kenya during a ten-day trip to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Clarence House announced the engagement on 16 November that year. William gave her the engagement ring that had belonged to his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales. On 29 April 2011, Catherine married Prince William at Westminster Abbey, becoming the Duchess of Cambridge. The couple have three children: George, Charlotte, and Louis. On 9 September 2022, she became Princess of Wales when William was created Prince of Wales by his father, King Charles III. Following her marriage, Catherine has undertaken royal duties and commitments in support of the British monarch. She has represented the royal family on official overseas tours. Catherine has also played a significant role in various charitable activities by undertaking projects through the Royal Foundation, with her work primarily focusing on issues surrounding early childhood care, addiction, and art. She is patron of multiple charitable and military organisations including the Anna Freud Centre, Action for Children, SportsAid, and the National Portrait Gallery.
Charitable Work and Patronage
Catherine has been involved with charity work both before and after her marriage. Catherine is a keen sportswoman and attends Wimbledon annually. She has been patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club since 2016. Catherine, who enjoys sailing, has occasionally taken part in the sport to raise money for charity. In 2012, alongside William and his brother Harry, Catherine launched Coach Core. In 2014, Catherine wrote the foreword for Living in the Slipstream: Life as an RAF Wife, whose proceeds raised money for charity. In December 2015, she assumed patronage of the Royal Air Force Air Cadets for youths 12-19 years of age. In February 2022, Catherine visited Denmark on behalf of the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. In June that year, she hosted her first roundtable discussion with politicians on early childhood development. In January 2023, Catherine launched the Shaping Us initiative through the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, a long-term campaign aimed at raising awareness about early childhood development and its importance. In November that year, she delivered the keynote speech at The Shaping Us National Symposium held at The Design Museum in London. In October 2025, Catherine co-authored an essay with Professor Robert J.
Media Attention and Privacy
Catherine's relationship with the media has been closely scrutinised, particularly her efforts to maintain privacy amid significant media attention and public interest. The media have referred to her impact on British and American fashion as the "Kate Middleton effect". In 2010, Middleton pursued a privacy claim against two agencies and the photographer Niraj Tanna over tennis photographs taken during Christmas 2009. In 2011, close associates of the private investigator Jonathan Rees alleged that he had targeted Middleton during her relationship with Prince William. In May 2011, the Middleton family complained to the PCC after photographs of Catherine and her family in swimwear during a 2006 holiday were published in several newspapers. The family argued that the images breached privacy and the editors' code of practice. In December 2012, Australian radio hosts Michael Christian and Mel Greig impersonated Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles in a call to King Edward VII's Hospital, where Catherine was being treated for hyperemesis gravidarum. They obtained information from a nurse on her ward. After a public backlash and hospital inquiry, Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who transferred the call, died by suicide. The hosts later apologised. In February 2013, Chi published photos of Catherine's exposed pregnant belly, taken during a holiday on the private island of Mustique.
Titles and Succession
Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September 2022, and Catherine's father-in-law succeeded as Charles III. Catherine became Duchess of Cornwall and Duchess of Rothesay. Thus, she was briefly referred to by the title "Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge". The following day, on 9 September 2022, the King announced William's appointment as Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester, thereby making Catherine Princess of Wales and Countess of Chester. George, Charlotte and Louis were respectively third, fourth and fifth in the line of succession to the British throne at the times of their births. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, they became second, third, and fourth in line to the throne.
