Understanding Student Success Completion Grant Eligibility
The Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG) is designed to provide additional financial assistance to Cal Grant recipients attending a California community college full-time. This grant aims to help students afford college by providing extra money on top of their Cal Grant B or C when they enroll full-time.
Core Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG), students must meet specific criteria. The state of California offers Cal Grants to qualifying students who are residents of California and have graduated from a California high school. Award is based on criteria set by the California Student Aid Commission. Eligibility is based on criteria set by the California Student Aid Commission. Awarded to students who receive a full time Cal Grant A, Cal Grant B or C award. You must be a Cal Grant B or C recipient to qualify for the Student Success Completion Grant. You apply for a Cal Grant by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application and have your current school submit your GPA to the California Student Aid Commission.
Enrollment Requirements
A key factor in determining SSCG eligibility is enrollment status. The Student Success Completion Grant (SSCG) is extra money on top of your Cal Grant B or C that can help you afford college when you enroll full-time. Full-time attendance is at least 12 units per term. If you are enrolled in 12 to 15+ units per semester (about 24 to 30+ units per academic year), you may qualify for an additional $2,596 to $10,500 per year, depending on your unit load and eligibility category. Students enrolled in 12-14.99 units per semester are eligible to receive $649 for the semester and students enrolled in 15+ units per semester are eligible to receive $2,000 for the semester.
However, to earn a college degree in four years, you will need to take more than 12 units per term. Students should talk to their college counselor to set up an education plan.
Cal Grant Eligibility
The SSCG is specifically for students who already receive a Cal Grant. Monetary assistance is provided to meet tuition and fee costs at four-year universities. This grant may be used at community colleges and universities, not to exceed four years.

Foster Youth Eligibility
Students who are current or former foster youth may be eligible for a higher SSCG amount. Students who are current or former foster youth whose dependency was established or continued by the court on or after the date the student turned 13 may be eligible for the Foster Youth SSCG amount. Beginning 2023-2024 award year, the Student Success Completion Grant pays Current or Former Foster Youth Cal Grant recipients enrolled full time $5250 per semester ($10500 annually). This program provides grants of up to $5,000 to eligible foster youth.
Application and Disbursement
Understanding the application process and how the grant is disbursed is crucial for students seeking this financial aid.
Application Process
You do not need to submit a separate SSCG application. You apply for a Cal Grant by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application and have your current school submit your GPA to the California Student Aid Commission. You must have your GPA Verification Form sent to CSAC by March 2 by your high school. Community college students who are California residents and who miss the March 2 deadline can apply by September 2 to receive consideration for competitive Cal Grant awards. For community college students only, there is an additional award; deadline is September 2. If you are a current student, the GPA Verification Form is sent electronically; no action is needed by the student. Students completing the Dream Act Application must apply by March 2 in order to receive Cal Grant consideration. But it is important to point out that students can apply year-round for the California College Promise Grant (i.e.
To be considered a Priority Applicant, you must complete all five steps of the application process by the Priority Deadline of April 30, 2025, for your application to be considered complete and considered for the Priority Board. Your “completed application date” will be the date that you complete all 5 steps. Applications will continue to be accepted after April 30, 2025, on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds are exhausted or we can no longer accept applications (no later than April 30, 2026).
Disbursement Timing and Contingencies
SSCG is awarded around the same time your Cal Grant is awarded. The SSCG is disbursed when the student’s enrollment is frozen for full time Cal Grant disbursement. Disbursement is contingent upon eligibility and funding. It is important to note about eligibility at payment timeSSCG eligibility is checked at the time of disbursement. Student Success Completion Grants are contingent on available funding. If funding is exhausted, any remaining (undisbursed) awards will be canceled.

If there is funding available after the fall and spring disbursements are made then additional disbursements may also be awarded to students who have earned 24-29.99 units for the year (regardless of semester enrollment including summer). These additional awards are worth $1,298 and is dependent upon whether or not funding is still available. Students who have earned 30+ units may be eligible for an additional $2,000 for the year. New Cal Grant regulations allow for an increased award for those students who have dependent students under the age of 18 that they are supporting and reside within the household.
