Navigating Parking at Stanford University: A Comprehensive Guide
Stanford University, with its sprawling campus and vibrant community, presents unique parking considerations for visitors, residents, commuters, and vendors alike. Understanding the regulations and options available is crucial for a smooth and hassle-free experience. This guide provides detailed information on parking policies, permit acquisitions, visitor parking solutions, and other essential aspects of parking at Stanford and Stanford Redwood City (SRWC).
Parking Management and Enforcement
Parking enforcement on the Stanford and Stanford Redwood City campuses is managed through a third-party agreement. To avoid citations, it is essential to be aware of when and where parking is enforced.
Visitor Parking Options
Stanford visitors, including those visiting residents, have two primary options for parking:
- ParkMobile: Purchase visitor parking using the ParkMobile app or website.
- Department or Resident Contact: Arrange for your department or resident contact to purchase parking on your behalf.
Paying for Visitor Parking via ParkMobile
All visitor parking payments are contactless and managed through Park Mobile. You can choose from these three options to pay for visitor parking through ParkMobile.
- ParkMobile’s Zone Parking: This option does not require an app download or account creation. You can check out as a guest.
- Pay-By-Phone: If you don’t have a smartphone or prefer an automated voice system, call ParkMobile at 877.727.5718 to start your parking session.
- ParkMobile App: Download the app and set up a Park Mobile account for convenient parking management.
Parking Permits: Who is Eligible?
Stanford Transportation has implemented a virtual permit system. Commuters, residents, and departments can purchase virtual parking permits, enter license plate information for vehicles they plan to park on campus, and link those vehicles to their permits.

- Commuting Students: Commuting students (non-first-year) can purchase commuter permits ‘A’ and ‘C’ while actively enrolled in classes, but are not eligible for residential permits.
- Resident Students: Students living on campus (resident students) and with an active housing contract can purchase residential permits for their designated house or dorm areas, but are not eligible for 'A' or 'C' commuter permits.
- Vendor Parking: Vendor parking is available to businesses with contracts or agreements with the university including banks, janitorial, food service businesses, consultants, and auditors.
- Faculty and Staff: Parking permits are available for faculty and staff.
Key Parking Rules and Regulations
Adhering to Stanford's parking regulations is critical to avoid citations and maintain campus order. Here are some essential rules:
- Observe the Signs: Before you park, check the signs at the entrance to the lot. Many lots are "shared" between resident students and commuters. For example, these lots may be marked 'SO' or ‘C’. You can park in this lot with a 'SO' or 'C' permit.
- Park in Marked Spaces: Never park on unposted dirt, grass, or undesignated roadsides. If an area is not explicitly marked for parking, assume you may not park there.
- Car Covers: Stanford's parking regulations require that car owners keep their license plates visible so the parking enforcement officer can see them. We also need the license plate number written on the windshield portion of your car cover using a permanent marker. With these options, parking enforcement officers can verify if a covered car has a valid permit.
- Abandoned Vehicles: The police may tow any vehicle abandoned on campus or stored in a commuter lot for more than 72 hours without special permission. Storage and towing are at the owner's expense.
- Violations of Parking Permit Terms and Conditions: Anyone found to violate Stanford Transportation's parking permit terms and conditions is subject to revocation of parking privileges. Instances of egregious misconduct may result in further administrative, disciplinary, and/or legal action, up to and including termination of employment or expulsion.
- Tour Bus Operators: Tour bus operators found violating Stanford parking policies and/or failing to adhere to its tour bus protocol will be cited and/or towed or banned from Stanford property.
Parking Citations: Fines and Appeals
Parking tickets range from $41 for a permit violation to $753 for illegally parking in a disabled space. SP+ issues citations. Stanford Transportation does not administer and cannot change parking citations. For questions about paying or appealing a parking ticket, refer to Parking Citations.

Stanford Health Care has locations throughout the Bay Area, in addition to our main campus in Palo Alto.
- Waiting Area: Is there a waiting area if I'm picking up someone from the hospital or do I need to pay for parking?
- In and Out Privileges: In and out privileges are only available with the seven-day parking pass.
- Bicycle Racks: There are bicycle racks located near all entrances to the hospital.
- Free Transportation: The free transportation can transport you from one side of the medical campus to the other and is available to take you from one location to another.
