Spare Hand Students: An App Connecting College Station Residents with Texas A&M Student Assistance
A Texas A&M student has developed an innovative application, "Spare Hand Students," designed to connect local residents with students seeking opportunities to provide assistance with various tasks. Building upon the spirit of community service exemplified by events like the Big Event, this app aims to make such support accessible throughout the year.
The Genesis of Spare Hand Students
Zach Miller, the creator of Spare Hand Students, officially launched the app in April. The app's popularity quickly grew, with the number of completed jobs soaring from 150 to 500 within a short two week period. This surge in activity highlights the demand for accessible assistance within the College Station community and the eagerness of students to provide these services.
Services Offered Through the App
Spare Hand Students facilitates connections between residents and students for a wide array of tasks. These include:
- Household Tasks: Assistance with chores and general upkeep around the house.
- Errands: Running errands for individuals who may have difficulty doing so themselves.
- Yard Work: Help with lawn maintenance, gardening, and other outdoor tasks.
- Heavy Lifting: Providing the strength and manpower for moving heavy items.
- Pet Care: Assisting with pet-related responsibilities, such as walking, feeding, and general care.
Benefits for Both Students and Residents
The Spare Hand Students app offers a mutually beneficial arrangement for both parties involved. Residents gain access to affordable and reliable help with tasks they may find challenging, while students earn income and gain valuable experience.
Miller emphasizes the skills and expertise that many students bring to the table, stating, "A lot of people look down on students and say, 'Hey let's wait until after college' and stuff but these students are really good at what they do so that quality aspect. The final thing is you get to support a local student in need."

The app also allows students to showcase their specific skills and majors. "They're juniors or seniors and a lot of them kind of have in their bio their degree and what it does for the customers. It really allows them to kind of see kind of who they should choose because, for instance, the construction science kids are awesome at everything. So it's like they'll put in there and then they say that they have like 10 years experience with odd jobs." This transparency empowers customers to select students whose skills align with the tasks at hand. The construction science students are awesome at everything.
Future Expansion
Miller hopes to continue expanding his reach in the community for customers and even reach other campuses to help launch Spare Hand Students across the state. The app can be downloaded in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
