Unveiling the James M. Seneff Honors Program: Opportunities, Requirements, and the Scholar Experience

The James M. Seneff Honors Program in the Herbert Wertheim College of Business represents an elite academic opportunity, forged through a collaborative partnership between the University Honors Program and the Wertheim College. This program aims to cultivate well-rounded students through diverse experiences, mentorship, and active engagement within the college community.

The Essence of Being a Seneff Scholar

Being a Seneff Scholar transcends traditional academic pursuits. It embodies active participation in the vibrant life of the Wertheim College. Seneff Scholars gain experience and knowledge through educational activities, volunteer experiences and a personalized one-on-one mentorship program. Scholars attend professional events, complete a cohort course, and engage in service initiatives. Furthermore, they are encouraged to pursue honors enrichment opportunities such as research, case competitions, or even graduate coursework, enriching their academic journey and expanding their skill sets.

Eligibility and Application Process

The program extends invitations to eligible students to apply starting August 1. The application is comprehensive, seeking to evaluate candidates holistically. It includes:

  • Short essay responses that allow applicants to articulate their aspirations and perspectives.
  • A letter of recommendation, providing insights into the applicant's character and potential.
  • A current resume, showcasing their academic and extracurricular achievements.

Academic strength is expected. What sets candidates apart is character, work ethic and professionalism. The program also strives to ensure that each cohort is composed of students who represent different majors, personality types and backgrounds.

Given the competitiveness of the program, many sophomores do not get in during their first year of eligibility.

Program Components and Expectations

The Seneff Honors Program is designed to provide a transformative experience, demanding a meaningful time commitment from its scholars. However, the program is structured to avoid conflicts with academic coursework or prior commitments. The core components include:

  • Professional Events: Seneff Scholars are required to participate in at least three professional events per semester, exposing them to industry insights and networking opportunities.
  • Mentorship Program: A cornerstone of the program is the mentorship component. Seneff Scholars will actively participate in a mentorship program with an executive in their related field.
  • Cohort Course: In their first spring as Seneff Scholars, students take a dedicated course, tentatively titled "Communication and Critical Thinking in the Business World," fostering collaborative learning and critical analysis skills.
  • College Enrichment Project: Each cohort of Seneff Scholars will develop a project for the college that helps to enrich the learning environment for students, contributing to the betterment of the academic community.
  • Service Engagement: As a group, Seneff Scholars will host and participate in at least one service event a year toward their Servscript requirements, emphasizing the importance of social responsibility.
  • Good Standing: Students must remain in good standing with the University Honors Program as well as the Wertheim College, upholding the standards of academic integrity and community engagement.

Honors Recognition

Participation in the Seneff Honors College culminates in an honors graduation distinction. Honors graduates may obtain either an honors certificate or an honors diploma, and receive corresponding honors regalia to wear with their cap and gown at Commencement. The Seneff Honors College celebrates all of its graduates at an honors-only recognition event during commencement weekend. Students and their loved ones are invited to celebrate their achievements with Valencia College administration, faculty, and staff.

The Broader Honors Experience

The Seneff Honors College helps students develop knowledge, mindsets, and skills needed to thrive in the 21st century through in-call and co-curricular opportunities. Each fall and spring semester, honors students engage in a robust schedule of activities that promote learning outside of the classroom through academic enrichment, community service, exposure to the arts, career development, and social networking. We encourage participation in any activity that sparks a student’s interest. Honors courses at Valencia College are interdisciplinary, prepare students to become 21st-century learners, and integrate research-driven engaged practices. Faculty work with the Honors College to identify one or more of the practices below to integrate into their curriculum: Undergraduate Research, Service Learning, Internationalizing the Curriculum, and Authentic Inquiry-based Learning.

Transfer Students

Students who completed the first part of their undergraduate journey at Santa Fe College or Valencia College may be eligible to join the University Honors Program through transfer admissions as incoming UF transfer students. Students meeting the eligibility criteria will be automatically invited to join the Honors Program. However, you will have to confirm that you are accepting the offer in writing and attend our mandatory orientation mini-conference. Mid-August: Required orientation workshop which serves as final confirmation.
