SDSU Housing Options for Sophomores: A Comprehensive Guide
Securing housing as a sophomore at San Diego State University (SDSU) involves navigating a lottery system, exploring on-campus and off-campus options, and understanding various deadlines and opportunities. On-Campus Housing: The Sophomore Housing Lottery
The primary avenue for sophomores to obtain on-campus housing is through the Sophomore Housing Lottery. This process occurs in two stages and is exclusively available to first-year students currently living on campus.
Stage I: Preparation (February 3 - February 28)
During Stage I, several key steps must be completed via the Housing Portal:
Review License Agreement Term Length (Required): The default term length for sophomores is nine (9) months, covering the academic year (August 21, 2025 - May 15, 2026). However, an eleven-and-a-half-month (11.5) term length, extending through the summer, is also available (August 21, 2025 - August 2, 2026). All roommates must select the same term length.
Search and Mutually Confirm Roommates (Optional): Students can form roommate groups of two (2) or four (4) people. The roommate group leader, determined by whoever initiates the roommate request, will receive a lottery date and time and will be responsible for selecting and assigning a room for all listed roommates. An exception exists for larger roommate groups of five (5) to nine (9) at Tepeyac or Tacuba. Lottery start times are assigned randomly, with roommate groups of four receiving earlier lottery dates than groups of two or individual students. By initiating a roommate group, you accept responsibility for assigning yourself and your roommate(s) to a space.

Select a Meal Plan (Optional): Meal plans are optional for sophomore students. Selections require an academic year commitment and cannot be canceled after August 21, 2025. Meal plan selections do not carry over into the summer.
Completing Stage I at any point within the February 3-28 period will not affect the lottery date and time assigned in March.
Stage II: Room Selection (March 17 - March 26)
Stage II involves selecting a room based on the assigned lottery date and time. Specific room types and buildings cannot be guaranteed, as selection is based on availability. Roommate group leaders and students without roommate groups log in to the Housing Portal to self-select their room and assign their roommate group (if applicable) to their living space, floor, or building.
Large Group Opportunity at Tepeyac and Tacuba
An exclusive opportunity exists for larger roommate groups of five (5) to nine (9) individuals to be assigned together at Tepeyac or Tacuba. This option guarantees that the entire roommate group will reside together in the same unit, unlike the standard lottery process, which may disperse groups into separate units. To take advantage of this opportunity, all steps outlined in the “Large Group Opportunity” section must be completed by the specified deadline. It is crucial to emphasize that this opportunity for lottery opt-out and combining roommate groups is exclusive to Tepeyac and Tacuba and does not apply to other residential buildings. Even with the large group opportunity, you do not need to fill every space in the suite. Tepeyac and Tacuba suites range from eight (8) to nine (9) students per suite.
After February 28, editing or changing roommate groups is not possible. Since you will be assigned to a space in Tepeyac or Tacuba, you will bypass the sophomore housing lottery.

Important Considerations for the Lottery
- The sophomore housing lottery is based on availability during the assigned lottery date and time.
- Specific room types and buildings cannot be guaranteed until the assignment is confirmed.
- Roommate groups may be two (2) or four (4) people only, with the exception of Tepeyac and Tacuba.
- Roommate groups can be co-ed and will be assigned to a co-ed unit.
- Student Leader selections will be made after the lottery process. Completing Stages I and II is recommended until selections are made. Transparency with your roommate group throughout the process is essential. Should you decide to accept the position, you will be removed from your assigned space.
Alternative Housing Options
Upper-Division and Graduate Student Housing
For upper-division and graduate students seeking on-campus housing for the 2025-26 academic year, availability is limited. Those interested can join the 2025-26 On-Campus Housing Interest List via the Housing Portal, which opens on February 3, 2025. However, on-campus housing for these students is not guaranteed and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on availability.
Spring or Summer Only Housing
Spring or Summer only housing is available to students who meet the eligibility requirements.
Fraternity and Sorority Housing
Students (Fall 2024, first-year new members) interested in being a resident of their respective fraternity/sorority chapter facility starting Fall 2025 during their sophomore year must individually submit their interest to the Pierce Greek Life Center via the FSL Chapter Live-In Request Google Form on or before January 22, 2025. This form is not the full exemption request. The Pierce Greek Life Center staff will route (via AdobeSign) the Letter of Intent/Contract Release Request to all individuals that need to initial/sign this document within five business days of receiving the Google Form entry. By January 29, 2025, students and chapters will be notified of eligibility. By January 30, 2025, advisors of chapters will submit the final list of names of those they wish to become residents of their chapter facility. The deadline for names of final eligible students with signed Letter of Intent/Contract Release Request form is February 12, 2025. The Office of Housing Administration will receive the names of final eligible students with signed Letter of Intent/Contract Release Request forms.
Off-Campus Housing
Given the limited availability of on-campus housing, especially for upper-division students, exploring off-campus options is highly recommended. Off-campus student housing near SDSU offers a variety of choices.

Housing Accommodations
California State University campuses are required by law to give housing accommodations to students who are currently or formerly homeless and/or foster youth. Housing provides reasonable accommodations to assure equal access to students with disabilities. Students seeking housing accommodations on the basis of disability must register for services with the Student Disability Services (SDS) by February 14, 2025, to be eligible for priority housing.

All sophomore residential communities offer Sophomore QUEST programming that consists of workshops and high-impact learning opportunities designed specifically for second-year students. This programming provides opportunities to create plans for degree completion, study abroad, undergraduate research, internships, healthy living, financial and credit management, and other programs that will contribute to your personal and academic success.
Contract Release
To request a release from the housing contract, students must submit the Contract Release Request to the Office of Housing Administration by February 7, 2025.
Construction
Students residing in The Tecs communities (Huaxtepec, Metepec, Mixquic, Toltec, Zacatepec and Zapotec) should anticipate some construction noise and minor disruptions as part of the Evolve student housing project.
Housing Rates
Housing rates vary based on whether the student selects a 9-month versus 11.5-month license agreement term length. The tier levels (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3) are based on building amenities. Triple, double, and single rate amounts refer to the number of students in the room, not the number of students in the unit.
