Navigating Your Transfer to SDSU: GPA Requirements and More

Transferring to a new university is a significant step, filled with excitement and, often, a bit of confusion. If San Diego State University (SDSU) is your target, understanding the transfer GPA requirements is crucial, but it's just one piece of the puzzle. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of what you need to know to successfully transfer to SDSU.

Understanding the Transfer Applicant Profile

You are considered a transfer student if you have college credits from an accredited institution and are six or more months beyond high school graduation. Each year, San Diego State University receives applications from thousands of highly qualified applicants. The school accepted 5046 students, which indicates how hard it is to transfer into SDSU.

GPA: The Numbers Game

To have a shot at transferring into SDSU, you should have a current GPA of at least 3.7 - ideally, your GPA will be around 3.85. For California community college students who complete the IGETC, SDSU General Education, or CSU General Education requirements, SDSU recommends a minimum transferable GPA of 2.9 for local applicants and 3.2 for non-local applicants.

The average transfer GPA for admitted students tends to be higher than these minimums, often in the 3.5-3.7 range depending on the major you're applying to. Applicants using the ADT pathway for admission may be within .1 of the grade point average (GPA) required by the major to which they are applying. However, a higher GPA may be required.

Beyond GPA: A Holistic Review

Keep in mind that GPA is not the only factor considered in the admissions process. SDSU looks at your overall academic performance, pattern of coursework, and any major-specific requirements. The more competitive your major, the higher your GPA should be for a better chance of admission. Applicants are admitted based on preparation for the intended major.

Minimum Requirements for Admission Consideration

You must meet the Transfer Admission Minimum Requirements to be considered for admission. These include:

  • Units: Complete 60 or more transferable semester (or 90 or more quarter) units. Transferable units are defined as course units that are applicable to a baccalaureate degree and do not include non-degree credit courses that are developmental, remedial, technical or professional in nature.
  • General Education: Complete a minimum of 30 units of General Education (which include the Golden Four courses listed below).
  • GPA: Have a 2.0 (“C”) or higher cumulative grade-point average. Students entering the professional program in education must have a 2.5 GPA. Be aware of majors with special instructions.
  • If applicable, maintain a 2.0 or higher GPA for any SDSU Regular Session, Special Session, Open University or Cross Enrollment coursework.

The "Golden Four"

Completion of the following GE courses, known as the "Golden Four:" Oral Communication, English Composition, Critical Thinking, and Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning must be at an institution that carries United States regional accreditation.

Partner Programs and Guaranteed Admission

San Diego State University (SDSU) and the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD) have partnered to expand access to higher education, improve transfer pathways, and support workforce development through a new academic facility at SDSU Mission Valley. As part of this agreement, guaranteed admission is available each fall for qualified upper-division transfer students from the following SDCCD campuses: San Diego City, Mesa, and Miramar Colleges.

Important Application Information

Many universities accept transfer applications during each semester. Applications will be accepted October 1-December 1, 2025 for fall 2026 admission. SDSU is only accepting applications for a second bachelor's degree in nursing. You must choose a major when applying to transfer to SDSU.

Transcripts

SDSU will accept only electronic transcripts from the schools listed on the Transcripts page. All college/university transcripts from foreign institutions must be submitted for a detailed, course-by-course credential evaluation. You should contact the evaluation service as soon as possible, as your request for official transcripts and completion of the evaluation will take several weeks to process. Completed verification forms will only be accepted from authorized representatives from California community colleges. Note: For many California community colleges, graduation is not automatic upon the completion of all degree requirements. It is often the student's responsibility to submit a graduation application during published time periods.
