Scholarships for Children of Police Officers: Eligibility and Opportunities

The sacrifices made by first responders, including police officers, extend to their families, who often share a sense of duty and face unique challenges. The absence of a parent, especially when permanent due to a line-of-duty death, can deprive children of emotional support and guidance regarding education. Coupled with the rising cost of higher education, these children may face significant obstacles in reaching their full potential. Fortunately, numerous scholarships are available to support the educational aspirations of children of police officers, acknowledging their families' dedication and service.

Eligibility Requirements and Opportunities

Several organizations and foundations offer scholarships specifically for children of law enforcement officers. These scholarships aim to alleviate the financial burden of higher education and provide opportunities for these deserving students to pursue their academic goals. Eligibility criteria vary depending on the scholarship, but common requirements include:

Parental Status and Service

Active or Retired Members: Many scholarships are available to the children of active or retired members in good standing of police associations. For example, scholarships are available to the children of active or retired members in good standing of the Mass Police Association.

Student Enrollment and Academic Standing

The First Responders Children’s Foundation helps children of first responders achieve their goals through scholarships and a powerful community network. FRCF offers various scholarships, including:

General Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded based on financial need, academic merit, and achievements. Patrick Cantlay Scholarship: This scholarship, created in partnership with PGA TOUR golfer Patrick Cantlay, supports first responder children pursuing business and/or entrepreneurship at the undergraduate level. Top-ranked PGA TOUR golfer and FRCF Ambassador Patrick Cantlay has joined with the First Responders Children’s Foundation to create the Patrick Cantlay Scholarship which will award four-year scholarships to two (2) first responder children who demonstrate business acumen and aspire to become entrepreneurs.
Luis G. Alvarez Memorial Scholarship: This memorial scholarship honors Luis Alvarez, a first responder who passed away from 9/11-related illnesses. A memorial scholarship named in honor of Luis G. Alvarez was announced on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2019 at the 19th Annual First Responders Children’s Foundation Thanksgiving Day Parade Breakfast in the presence of members of the Luis Alvarez family including his widow, Alaine Alvarez.

Arkansas: The Law Enforcement Officers’ (LEO) Dependents Scholarship program provides an eight-semester scholarship to any state-supported college, university, or technical institute in Arkansas to dependents of Arkansas residents in one of the categories below who were killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty.
Florida: The FSA Criminal Justice Scholarship provides $2,000 to 10 children of full-time employees in a Florida sheriff’s office seeking degrees in the field of criminal justice. Mississippi: The Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to dependent children and spouses of any Mississippi law enforcement officer, full-time firefighter or volunteer firefighter who has suffered fatal injuries or wounds or become permanently and totally disabled as a result of injuries or wounds which occurred in the performance of the official and appointed duties of his or her office. The Mississippi Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters Scholarship Program offers financial assistance to dependent children and spouses of any Mississippi law enforcement officer, full-time firefighter or volunteer firefighter who has suffered fatal injuries or wounds or become permanently and totally disabled as a result of injuries or wounds which occurred in the performance of the official and appointed duties of his or her office.

Application Process and Deadlines

The application process for scholarships typically involves completing an application form, providing supporting documents such as transcripts and proof of parental occupation, and writing an essay. Applications for the Annual Scholarship Awards are now being accepted. Deadlines vary depending on the scholarship, so it is essential to check the specific requirements for each program. As in the past, a total of $35,000 will be awarded to eligible recipients. Applications MUST be received by the Committee on or before March 31st of that year. Some deadlines are in May or June. The 2021-2022 application has now closed. 2026 Applications Will Open in December.
