General Eligibility Requirements

For high school students graduating in the 2020-2021 academic year and thereafter, the required examination scores are those published by the department. To earn the Bright Futures Florida Academic Scholars award, you’ll need a minimum of 1330 on the SAT, a minimum of 29 on the ACT, or a minimum of 95 on the CLT.
Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS): To be eligible for the Florida Medallion Scholars award, students graduating in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 academic years needed a minimum SAT combined score of 1170 or an ACT composite score of 26. For high school students graduating in the 2020-2021 academic year and thereafter, the required examination scores are those published by the department. The Florida Medallion Scholars program, on the other hand, requires a minimum of 1190 on the SAT, a minimum of 82 on the CLT, or a minimum of 24 on the ACT.
Florida Gold Seal CAPE Scholars (GSC): The Florida Gold Seal CAPE Scholars program has no SAT requirement.
Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars (GSV): The Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars program has varying minimum SAT scores for the different awards.

It's important to note that the Florida Department of Education has a method for determining the required examination scores which incorporates ensuring that the required examination scores represent top student performance and are equivalent between the SAT, ACT, and Classic Learning Test (CLT). The minimum required SAT score for the Florida Academic Scholarship must be set no lower than the 89th national percentile on the SAT, and the minimum required SAT score for the Florida Medallion Scholarship must be set no lower than the 75th national percentile on the SAT.

GPA and Coursework Requirements

In addition to the SAT score requirements, each Bright Futures program also has minimum GPA and coursework requirements.

Florida Academic Scholars (FAS): Florida Academic Scholars must hold a minimum 3.5 weighted GPA. Additionally, they must obtain a minimum score of 29 on the ACT, a 95 on the CLT (Classic Learning Test), or 1330 on the SAT. Students must also have completed a set of high school coursework requirements. However, these requirements align with the state university system admission requirements.
Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS): Florida Medallion Scholars must hold a minimum 3.0 weighted GPA. Additionally, they must obtain a minimum score of 24 on the ACT, an 82 on the CLT, or 1190 on the SAT. Students must be pursuing an applied technology diploma, an associate’s degree in applied science or associate in science, or a career certificate. If students have already received an associate’s degree, they can receive funding for up to 60 hours towards a Bachelor’s.

For purposes of calculating the grade point average to be used in determining initial eligibility for a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship, the department shall assign additional weights to grades earned in Advanced Placement, pre-International Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate, International General Certificate of Secondary Education (pre-AICE), or Advanced International Certificate of Education, or advanced courses developed under Florida Statutes. Courses designated as academic dual enrollment courses in the statewide course numbering system also receive additional weights.

The award amounts for each Bright Futures scholarship vary:

Florida Academic Scholars (FAS): The Florida Academic Scholars will receive an award amount equal to 100% of tuition and applicable fees.
Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS): Florida Medallion Scholars will receive an award amount equal to 75% of tuition and applicable fall, spring and summer fees.
Florida Gold Seal CAPE Scholars (GSC): The Florida Gold Seal CAPE Scholars program provides a fixed payment per credit hour which varies by program of study.
Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars (GSV): The Florida Gold Seal CAPE Scholars program provides a fixed payment per credit hour which varies with program of study.

The Florida Department of Education has determined that the award should cover 100% of the following fees; tuition, capital improvement, financial aid, athletics, health, activities & services, differential, transportation, and technology, which comes to a total of $213.55 per credit hour. However, additional costs like online or lab fees may not be covered. FSU also assesses a $2 per credit hour Student Affairs Facilities Use Fee, a $20 per semester Facilities Use Fee, and a $5 per semester FSUCard fee that are not included in the fees allowable for Bright Futures calculation.

Bright Futures scholarships can be used at any approved program in the state of Florida, public or private, including community colleges.

Renewal Requirements

Students who receive a Bright Futures scholarship must meet certain renewal requirements to maintain their eligibility:

Renewal students must earn the GPA and the required hours on all college coursework attempted, including transient enrollment hours.

Renewal eligibility is an automatic process that occurs at the end of the spring term for those students who received funding during the previous year.

Additional Considerations

Students are not required to submit a FAFSA in order to receive both initial and renewal Bright Futures eligibility.
Students who engage in a military, religious, or service obligation can defer the Bright Futures Scholarship as long as the obligation lasts longer than 18 months.
If a student is unable to accept an initial award due to a full-time religious or service obligation lasting at least 18 months which begins within 1 year after completion of high school, the 5-year period begins upon the completion of his or her religious or service obligation. The organization sponsoring the full-time religious or service obligation must meet the requirements for nonprofit status under s. 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code or be a federal government service organization, including, but not limited to, the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps programs. The obligation must be documented in writing and verified by the entity for which the student completed the obligation on a standardized form prescribed by the department.
A student with a verifiable illness or some other emergency beyond the student’s control may appeal the repayment requirement by completing the State Programs and Scholarships Appeal Form and submitting it with supporting documentation. Repayment for withdrawn courses appeals may be submitted after courses are withdrawn but must be submitted no later than April 30th.
