RPI Sophomore Housing: A Comprehensive Guide to On-Campus Living

Choosing the right housing is a crucial part of the college experience. For RPI sophomores, a variety of on-campus housing options are available, each with its own unique characteristics and advantages. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of these options, helping students make informed decisions about where to live during their second year.

The Sophomore Housing Requirement

It's important to know that all second-year students are required to live on campus. As a result, students entering their second year who do not complete the housing application prior to its full closing date will still be housed. However, they will not be able to make any changes to the application's lifestyle questionnaire, which is utilized in finding roommate matches for those that do not provide a requested roommate. This may result in less ideal roommate matches for these students.

Key Dates for Housing Applications

Staying on top of important dates ensures a smooth housing application process. For the Academic Year 2026-2027, the Housing Applications for all returning and transfer students will be accessible on April 8, 2026.

  • Application Opens: April 8, 2026
  • Preference Section Closes: April 24, 2026. This is the deadline to provide building preferences and request a specific roommate. Students must submit their application prior to this section's closing to have building preferences and roommate requests considered.
  • Application Full Closing: May 29, 2026

General Housing Options

While specific assignments can shift from year to year depending on class sizes and other institutional decisions, several housing areas are commonly available to sophomores. Here's a look at some of those options:

1. BARH (Bryckwyck, Blitman, City Station): Primarily for upperclassmen and transfer students, these residence options vary in style, with both suite-style and apartment-style living available. BARH offers a bit more independence, and in some cases, more privacy compared to Freshman Five and Quad. Facilities may include private/shared bathrooms, kitchens, and separate living spaces.

2. Colonie Apartments: Upperclassmen housing offered in a more apartment-style setup, which includes a kitchen, living space, and bedroom areas. This option gives students a greater sense of independence and can be a good way to transition into living off-campus.

**3. Stacwyck: **Another upperclassmen housing option, Stacwyck Apartments provide apartment-style living in several buildings (Sharp Hall, North Hall, South Hall). Units come with a living room, kitchen, and single/double bedrooms. These apartments are also used to accommodate Greek housing for certain fraternities and sororities.

4. E-Complex (Including Hirai Hall): It is rumored that E is for Sophomores this year. Hirai Hall is a part of E-Complex and singles in Hirai are big and close to academic buildings. There is AC in E complex. E-Complex does have a laundry room in its basement. At this time E-Complex is closed for renovations and will reopen in the fall.

Making Your Housing Decision

Roommate Requests

During the housing application process, students are able to select a preferred roommate/suitemate group through a roommate preference function. There are two important things to note with roommate requests: There is a deadline for submission of roommate requests. Annually the deadline for submission falls around late May, typically the last Friday of the month. Within the Housing Application, you will be asked to fill out a roommate matching survey. This survey will ask you a number of questions regarding your lifestyle preferences. Using these responses, you will be able to search for roommates based on the answers they provided to their questions.

Lifestyle Questionnaire

Students who do not complete the housing application prior to its full closing date will still be housed. However, they will not be able to make any changes to the application's lifestyle questionnaire, which is utilized in finding roommate matches for those that do not provide a requested roommate. This may result in less ideal roommate matches for these students.

Special Interest Housing

Special Interest Housing communities offer the opportunity to extend the classroom learning experience to a living environment shared with other students with similar interests and passions.

Gender-Inclusive Housing

We recognize that single-gender housing may not be appropriate or comfortable for all students. To accommodate for this, a limited number of rooms are made available as gender-inclusive housing in both the residence halls and apartments. Gender Inclusive Housing areas will allow students to have roommates and suitemates that identify across the gender spectrum without consideration of legal sex. You may choose this option in the housing application. Note that Gender Inclusive Housing is only open to students who indicate interest in it and provide responses to all related questions on their housing application.

Lastly, only one of the first-year residence halls, Barton, has an elevator. As such, we encourage you to pack items in multiple, smaller boxes, thus making them easy to carry, than in a few, larger boxes. This should make move-in more pleasant. Move-in volunteers will be available to assist you with moving personal items into your room. Move-in volunteers are distributed across campus based on the number of volunteers, the size of the unloading area, and other considerations.
