While RMHCs may offer all four of the scholarships outlined below, the Ronald McDonald scholarship is not restricted to just these four scholarships.

To be considered for any of the RMHC scholarships, applicants must meet the following fundamental requirements:

Varying Award Amounts: This would actually vary across different RMHC chapters. However, it is normally based on your local RMHC scholarship budgets.
Staying in School: When you’re awarded a Ronald McDonald Scholarship, note that you’ll have to stay in school throughout that academic year, unless you are interrupted by something which must be approved by your scholarship sponsor.
Direct Payment to School: This scholarship body would send in cheques directly to your school, and these funds would take care of your tuition, fees and books.
One Scholarship Only: Applicants can only win one scholarship: either the Janice Flemmons Scholarship OR the Dina Jeffries Leadership Scholarship.

RMHC Las Vegas: A Case Study

The RMHC of Las Vegas Scholarship Program is designed to provide financial assistance to eligible graduating high school seniors who face limited access to educational and career opportunities. Since 1999, more than $4.5 million in scholarships have been awarded to students in Clark and Nye counties. Scholarships are awarded by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas, with support from local McDonald's owner/operators and other community partners. A portion of every Happy Meal and Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper sold in participating McDonald's restaurants helps fund the RMHC Las Vegas Scholarship Program. Between the two fundraising sources, McDonald's has donated more than $2.1 million to the Scholarship Program.

"This program allows us the opportunity to say to these young adults, 'we believe in you and your future,'" says Eva Martin, Past RMHC Las Vegas Board President and local McDonald's owner/operator. "We know that a number of these students wouldn't have the chance to go to college if it weren't for the support they're receiving from these scholarships." RMHC of Greater Las Vegas also partners with various community organizations to offer additional scholarship opportunities that are unique to our chapter. These partner scholarships can be found on the RMHC Las Vegas High School application and may require additional supporting documents and/or eligibility criteria.

Important Announcement Regarding RMHC Las Vegas Scholarship Program

Since 2019, RMHC Las Vegas has been one of the only remaining Chapters in the RMHC system to still operate a college scholarship program. With dwindling funding sources as well as a growing need to focus fully on RMHC’s three core mission programs, the time had come to make a tough decision. After much consideration, the RMHC Board of Directors, the Scholarship Committee, and Staff decided to formally sunset the RMHC Scholarship Program in 2023. The remaining funds dedicated to scholarships were awarded to qualifying alumni scholars who were previously awarded at the high school level through the RMHC Scholarship Program.
