Rice University Graduate Certificate Programs: A Comprehensive Overview

Rice University offers a variety of graduate certificate programs designed to provide students with focused knowledge and skills in specific areas. Introduction to Graduate Certificates at Rice University

Graduate certificate programs at Rice University are formally recognized academic programs that attest to a level of competence or the development of skills in a particular area or field. These programs are designed for students who may or may not be enrolled as Rice degree-seeking students. The certificates recognize students who have achieved a specific level of competence or skill and encourage students to pursue areas the faculty has designated as having significant value in the graduate curriculum.

A Graduate Certificate program is not intended to substitute for a graduate degree but may be taken by degree-seeking graduate students to complement their graduate program. These programs benefit the University and the Rice graduate community. As such, Graduate Certificate programs may be restricted to Rice degree-seeking graduate students, restricted to non-degree-seeking post-baccalaureate students or graduate certificate students, or open to both Rice degree-seeking graduate students and graduate certificate students.

Eligibility and Proposal Process

All academic departments, schools, and the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies are eligible to submit proposals for the creation of new Graduate Certificate programs. All proposals must originate from those entities. For inclusion in Rice University's official curriculum, all Graduate Certificate programs must be formally approved by the Graduate Council and the Faculty Senate.

Program Review and Oversight

Graduate Certificate programs will be reviewed by the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies after the fifth year of the program and again every five years. These reviews will follow the format proscribed by Graduate Council's Evaluation of New Programs. This review should also assess the positive and negative impact of this program on other programs at Rice. As with any graduate program, the processes to eliminate a graduate program may be indirectly triggered based on assessments of Graduate Council, but the review to establish whether a graduate program should be eliminated is different from the routine performance reviews of departments and graduate programs.

As an official academic credential, the awarding of Graduate Certificates is ultimately overseen by the faculty and president of the university with conferral performed three times a year, at the end of each semester. Degree-seeking graduate students will have their certificates conferred concurrently with their Rice degree while graduate certificate students will have their certificates at the end of the semester of the completed coursework. Successful completion of the certificate will be posted on the student's official academic transcript at that time. Rice's commencement ceremony will not include recognition for graduate certificate students. Taken on a standard letter-grade basis.

Admission and Enrollment

When seeking admission into a Rice graduate degree-granting program, student applicants may apply for a certificate program through the online graduate application; all application fees are waived. As part of the student’s application or declaration for the graduate certificate, the student’s initial graduate degree program will have an opportunity to comment on, or object, to the student’s addition of the graduate certificate, but explicit approval is not required. Students may complete and acquire more than one graduate certificate, provided that the student meets any and all of the requirements for each certificate program. Unless specifically prohibited by the graduate program in the General Announcements, courses taken toward the certificate may additionally count toward the graduate degree.

Non-degree-seeking post-baccalaureate students, who apply for and are granted admission into a graduate standalone certificate program, are known as graduate certificate students. Graduate certificate students must apply formally for the graduate certificate program via the online application. As a standalone graduate certificate, the minimum requirements and deadlines for admission are consistent with the standards for Rice degree-granting programs. Please see Admission. Graduate certificate students in these standalone graduate certificate programs may only take the specifically identified coursework within the requirements of that graduate certificate. Graduate certificate programs are intended to recognize students who have achieved a defined level of competence, skill, or professional expertise, as well as to encourage students to pursue additional areas of interest in a particular area or field that complements their coursework in the graduate degree-granting program to which they have been admitted. Note: Graduate Certificate programs may identify and define in their program's General Announcements Requirements tab stricter minimum requirements to satisfy their program requirements.

Access to University Resources

Graduate certificate students will have appropriate access to university resources and services, but this access may or may not be at the same level as that of graduate students. For example, full-time doctoral students have access to a medical insurance subsidy while other students do not. Students taking for-credit courses have access to the library to enable them to be successful in their coursework while Rice Learners (who take non-credit courses) have access to the library as a member of the public. Students taking courses on campus are eligible for parking. Students that are away from campus are not required to pay the student health fee. University services such as dining are open to all students, faculty, and staff as well as the public. Access determinations will be made by the relevant offices and stakeholders (i.e., parking will determine parking availability).

Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning

Energy & Data Management Certificate

Key Considerations for New Programs

When proposing a new Graduate Certificate program, several factors must be considered:

How is the Graduate Certificate different in structure and purpose from other graduate programs?
How does the Graduate Certificate potentially impact other existing Graduate Certificates and degree programs?
Provide a list of required courses, electives, other requirements, and the total minimum number of hours required.
An assessment plan for measuring the success and effectiveness of design of the certificate curriculum after implementation. The Office of Institutional Effectiveness is charged with assisting proposers with the development of these elements.
USDE requires that an assessment of students' post-certificate work achievement is assessed for non-degree seeking students (i.e., Regulations on Gainful Employment).
Describe the impact on university services to serve Graduate Certificate students enrolled in the program.
Describe the impact on the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) and the estimate of the number of international students might enroll. What additional resources will be needed to serve these students? Please note there are strict federal immigration restrictions that might inhibit Rice's ability in certain cases to sponsor visas for international students.
The proposed complete GA text and language as it would appear in the General Announcements if the proposal were approved. The GA text should include the official name of the Graduate Certificate and all documented courses requirements, etc.
Assess the risks for this new program (for example: sustainability of the program and staffing, reputation of the university, delivery of curriculum, impact on other existing department and university programs, financial risk, etc.).

Graduate Programs at Rice University

Graduate programs at Rice usually require full-time study, however, many non-thesis programs can be completed on a part-time basis and some offer online options. Rice Graduate Studies is not requiring the GRE for 2025, but will provide students with the option of submitting those scores.

GRE Requirements

General GRE is recommended but not required: Master's in Material Science and NanoEngineering; Ph.D.
General GRE is strongly recommended but not required: Master's in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering, Ph.D. in Civil Engineering; Master's in Architecture; Master's in Mechanical Engineering, Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Ph.D.
General GRE is required for the Ph.D.
Graduate programs in the Jones School of Business generally require some standardized testing, such as GMAT, Executive Assessment or the GRE. Waivers may be available for those with appropriate qualifications as described at the Jones School’s application site.

For 2025 admission, Rice is also waiving doctoral application fee waivers for students graduating from institutions in Texas or bordering states, or for students who reside in those states.
