A Legacy of Continuing Education at Rice

Rice University's commitment to continuing education dates back to 1967, with the formation of the Office of Continuing Studies, led by its first director, Carl Wischmeyer. Over the years, this commitment has grown and evolved, culminating in the establishment of the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies. A transformative moment arrived in 2005 when Mr. and Mrs. Melbern G. Glasscock and the Glasscock Foundation made a historic endowment gift to Rice University’s School of Continuing Studies. This was the largest known endowment gift ever made to a university continuing education program in the United States. To accommodate the continued growth of the Glasscock School, the D. Kent and Linda C. Anderson and Robert L. and Jean T. Clarke Center opened in spring 2014. The 53,000-square-foot building helps the Glasscock School increase its scope and grow its enrollment. Dr. Robert Bruce Jr., a higher education leader with 25 years of experience in administrative and academic roles, was named the new dean of the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies.

Teacher and Leadership Preparation Programs

Rice Education offers teacher and leadership preparation programs that integrate work in courses with field-work experience. The programs provide strategic, continual practice to engage, prepare and support students in the exploration of critical issues in education. The Rice MAT degree provides a strong exploration of the pedagogical and curricular issues necessary for teaching diverse students in our evolving communities, with paths for new teachers, experienced teachers and Rice undergraduates. A key element of the program is the extensive fieldwork, which links the children, teachers, and classroom practices of urban schools to the coursework. Rice University offers an alternative certification program for post-bac career changers. Rice University offers teacher certification through either a traditional, university-based program of 21 credit hours or a 5-year master’s degree. Rice's Principal Certification Program brings together the values and requirements of the Texas Education Agency with the academic quality of Rice University.

The minor in teaching provides Rice undergraduate students the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of the education profession, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to make a meaningful impact in the classroom or on policy. Students will engage in hands-on experiences, including classroom observations and internships, that foster experiential learning and direct application of academic theory.

Transfer Credit Policies

Dr. Six credit hours may transfer from another Institution of Higher Education (IHE) that specifically correlate with the Rice University Education (EDUC) courses. The transferring courses must demonstrate an alignment to the Teaching Standards in 19 TAC, Chapter 149. A candidate transferring from another IHE as an undergraduate student must complete at least 24 credit hours of a 30-credit-hour coursework program in the Rice University Education Department. The Department does not offer an undergraduate degree in Education; therefore, candidates must major in the area they want to teach. Candidates transferring into the Rice University Education Department from an alternative certification program must complete 30 credit hours of a 30-credit-hour coursework program. If a candidate has taken and passed the content and Pedagogy and Professional Responsibility exams, those scores are transferable.

Criminal Background Checks

Candidates will not be issued either a probationary or a standard teaching certificate from the State of Texas without the fingerprinting/criminal background check. Candidates may apply for the criminal background check prior to submitting an application into an educational preparation program, but must be done prior to being on any school campus with the program. Criminal history record information includes both conviction and arrest records. The State of Texas (by House Bill 1508 in 2017) the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB), the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) require that an educator preparation program inform all certification program applicants and candidates about the State’s rules on criminal background checks from the Texas Occupations Code Chapter 53, the Texas Education Code Chapter 22.0831 and the Texas Administrative Code, Part VII, Chapter 227, Subchapter B.

Flexible Learning Options

The Glasscock School understands the importance of flexibility in today's fast-paced world. To accommodate diverse schedules and learning preferences, the school offers a variety of course formats:

Synchronous Learning: These courses are fixed-time, live sessions where instruction is facilitated virtually.
Blended Learning: Blended courses combine online educational instruction with live learning experiences, either at Rice University or in a digital space. Details specific to your course can be found in the online description.
Online Classes: The online classes, either interactive or lecture series, provide the same content as the face-to-face classes. The classes will be going online and will take place in our “virtual classroom.” Your experience from within the “virtual classroom” will be very similar to the face to face classroom. You will be able to see and hear your instructor via video as well as the class PowerPoint. Collaboration between students and the instructor will take place as it does in the face to face classroom using your microphone and or the chat function. The lecture series will be pre-recorded and accessible the week of your scheduled class. All you will need to access the lecture is a computer with speakers and the internet.

Course sizes vary, but are always kept to an appropriate size to foster interaction and instructor attention. Depending on the course, you may need to login at designated times. The online faculty and instructors have industry experience as well as academic degrees. Their real-world credentials enrich course materials, class discussions and one-on-one interaction.
