Reach Higher Montana Scholarships: A Comprehensive Guide to Requirements and Opportunities

For Montana students aspiring to pursue higher education, scholarships offer a crucial pathway to alleviate the financial burden. Reach Higher Montana, alongside various state and local organizations, provides a multitude of scholarship opportunities. This article serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding the requirements, eligibility criteria, and application processes for Reach Higher Montana scholarships.

The Importance of Scholarships

Scholarships represent money for college that you don’t have to repay. Unlike loans, these awards are free and do not need to be paid back. Scholarships are not just for valedictorians and athletes; they are available for all kinds of students, based on financial need, field of study, or even your background. Many people believe in education and support students through scholarships.

Finding Scholarships

Begin by exploring the scholarship search tools available on Level All and the Montana Career Information System (MCIS). These platforms provide access to a wide range of scholarships tailored to Montana students. Research scholarships for which you're eligible to apply, and keep a folder with the scholarship information, sorted by due date. Keep the file up to date as new information becomes available.

"It's Scholarship Time" Application

Several scholarships are available through the “It’s Scholarship Time” application, but take note that all of the scholarships available through the “It’s Scholarship Time” application are non-renewable meaning they are awarded on a year by year basis only. Applicants are encouraged to reapply each year if they remain eligible for the application whether or not they have previously won the scholarship.

Key Dates

The "It's Scholarship Time!" application typically opens on January 1st and closes on March 1st at 11:59 PM MST. Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar and submit your application well in advance of the deadline.

Eligibility

Eligibility for each scholarship varies. Many of the scholarships you will be eligible for do require you to attend a Montana post-secondary program of study but not all of them. High school seniors or college students who have/will graduate from a Montana High School, have/will complete the FAFSA by April 1, attend (at least half-time) ANY accredited post-secondary institution nationwide, pursuing a certificate/degree in a business-related field or has completed at least one Business/Finance related course in high school or college.

Application Process

After completing the eligibility questions, you may find that you did not get the scholarship(s) you thought I qualified for, this is because individual scholarships will have supplemental questions that you will need to complete before you can submit each application. Because some scholarships use the same questions, you will only have to answer the question once and that answer will show up on any scholarships that use that same question.

Scholarship Award Details

All scholarship awards will be paid directly to the school you will be attending. All scholarship awards are sent to your school for the full amount, the first term you are enrolled. Be aware, however, that each post-secondary institution reserves the right to determine how your award is applied to your student account. This depends on how quickly you, the applicant, return the required follow-up documents that will be requested from you.

In the event new scholarship opportunities are added to the ‘It’s Scholarship Time’ application, the Programs Manager, Steven Coop, will run a new eligibility check for that scholarship on any application previously submitted.

Scholarship Deferment

Recipients are preferred to use their scholarships for the upcoming academic year. However, because we know that life happens, we will make deferment decisions on a case-by-case basis.

Evaluation Process

Every year an application is open, a new committee will evaluate submissions. They do not receive applicant names or information on any prior awards won.

  • Evaluation Criteria: Applications will first be evaluated for meeting the minimum requirements. Applications will then be evaluated based on secondary criteria.
  • Priority: To offer the scholarship broadly across Montana, the selection will give priority to one student from each high school, plus homeschoolers. Some consideration may be given to applicants who represent rural and tribal communities.
  • Submission: There is an online portal for submitting scholarship applications.

Volunteer Service Eligibility

  • Volunteer service with your church or religious institution can be counted if they are not considered “religious proselytization.” Examples of acceptable hours include food drives, serving food at a soup kitchen, collecting holiday presents for those in need, or visiting nursing homes. Examples of unacceptable hours include teaching Sunday school, building churches, assisting with worship services, or singing in the worship choir.
  • Volunteer hours with school can be counted if they are not part of your typical class time. Helping with sporting events, peer tutoring, trash cleanups, recycling drives, and helping with special events are all acceptable volunteer hours.

Scholarship Usage

  • The scholarship is to be utilized for the school year that it is awarded.
  • The Youth Serve Montana Scholarship payment will be sent directly to your institution’s financial aid office before the fall semester begins.
  • The scholarship is applied directly to the student’s tuition, and is split between the fall and spring semesters, with half applied to each semester. Other scholarships or tuition waivers provided by the school may reduce the school’s match portion (typically half) of the Youth Serve Montana Scholarship.
  • Recipients should follow up with their financial aid officer to confirm the funds have been applied to their tuition. Please notify the campus that you are receiving a Youth Serve Montana Scholarship upon enrollment.
  • The scholarship must be used at the same institution for both semesters within the academic year. If you transfer between semesters, you are not eligible to receive the scholarship.
  • The scholarship can cover costs of attendance, which typically refers to tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, transportation, and personal expenses.

General Scholarship Application Tips

  • Start Early: Begin your scholarship search and application process well in advance of deadlines.
  • Meet the Requirements: Ensure that you meet all eligibility requirements before applying for a scholarship.
  • Pay Attention to Deadlines: Adhere to all application deadlines. We have set a firm deadline of March 1st at 11:59 PM MST.
  • Complete the FAFSA: Many forms of financial aid including some scholarships and grants require you to file the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to apply.
  • Write a Compelling Essay: Use those stories to earn money to pay for college. A story about perseverance, giving back, learning something new - that’s what scholarship essays are made of - stories.
  • Seek Recommendations: If you are asking someone to write a letter of recommendation for you, make it easy for them. Provide them with some background on the scholarship for which you are applying, outline your accomplishments and skills that demonstrate your eligibility, and give your references plenty of time to write you a letter of recommendation. You can use this form to organize your request. Asking for a letter the day before the scholarship is due isn't a great idea, as your reference may not have time to write you a letter.
  • Proofread Carefully: Before submitting your application, proofread it carefully for any errors in grammar or spelling.
  • Stay Organized: Keep track of your application’s progress, and any deadlines.

Additional Tips

  • Tell Your Story: You are scholarship material because you have a story to tell.
  • Avoid Scams: Be careful. Unfortunately, you have to be aware that there are people who try to take advantage of scholarship applicants.
