QuestBridge National College Match: A Comprehensive Guide to Requirements and Opportunities

The QuestBridge National College Match program stands as a beacon of opportunity for high-achieving, low-income students aspiring to attend the nation's top colleges and universities. This initiative provides a pathway to early admission and full four-year scholarships, enabling students to pursue their academic dreams without the burden of financial constraints. This article delves into the intricacies of the QuestBridge Match Scholarship, outlining the eligibility criteria, application process, and requirements for aspiring scholars.

Understanding the QuestBridge National College Match

The QuestBridge National College Match is a college admission and scholarship process designed to connect high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds with some of the nation’s top colleges and universities. Through the National College Match application, students who have excelled academically despite financial hardship can highlight their unique story and stand out in the college admissions process. The program offers a unique opportunity for students to be "matched" with a college, gaining early admission and a full four-year scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

QuestBridge is looking for high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds. While there are no absolute criteria or cut-offs for GPA, standardized test scores, income, or other factors, successful applicants typically demonstrate the following:

  • Academic Excellence: Earn primarily A’s in the most challenging courses available and display intellectual curiosity and strong writing ability.
  • Class Ranking: Rank in the top 5-10% of their class.
  • Challenging Coursework: Challenge themselves by taking Honors, AP, and/or IB courses, if available.
  • Standardized Test Scores (Optional): If submitting standardized test scores, likely score within middle 50% SAT score: 1280-1460 and/or middle 50% ACT score: 26-33. Note: Test scores are not required to apply. All applications are reviewed holistically, so a student who has not taken standardized tests can still be selected as a Finalist if the rest of their application is strong.
  • Financial Need: Come from households earning less than $65,000 annually (for a household of four) and have minimal assets. Qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. Face financial hardship.

It's important to note that citizens and permanent residents living abroad are not eligible for the National College Match. The National College Match is for students planning to attend college in the fall after their senior year.

The Application Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

The QuestBridge National College Match application process involves several key steps:

Step 1: Initial Application Submission

Students submit their National College Match application in September. This application serves as a comprehensive overview of their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, personal circumstances, and financial background. QuestBridge reviews the applications to determine which students will be selected as Finalists. The application includes:

  • Information on your academics, activities, household, and financial background
  • Writing section
  • Two teacher recommendations from core academic subjects
  • Current high school transcript and additional transcripts (unofficial transcripts are accepted)
  • School Report from your current high school counselor
  • School Profile (optional, but recommended)
  • Any standardized test score reports to-date (if taken).

It is important to submit your application by the deadline.

Step 2: Ranking Colleges

Students are able to rank up to 15 colleges to be "matched". This is a critical step, as students are essentially expressing their preferences for which colleges they would like to attend with a Match Scholarship. Students are able to rank up to 15 colleges to be "matched" - admitted early with a Match Scholarship - to the college that appears highest on their list and is able to match with them.

Step 3: Finalist Selection and Match Requirements

QuestBridge selects top applicants as Finalists, and Finalists submit Match Requirements to college partners on their rankings list.

Step 4: Match Results

In early December, Finalists find out if they matched.

Step 5: Alternative Options

Finalists who do not match or choose not to rank colleges can use their QuestBridge application to apply to our college partners through other early and regular decision opportunities.

Match Requirements: Essential Documents for Finalists

Match Requirements are additional materials you must submit to each of the college partners on your ranking list if selected as a Finalist. These materials are required to be considered for the Match Scholarship and are due by November 1. Finalists are required to submit Match Requirements to the college partners on their ranking list. The more schools you rank, the more Match Requirements you will need to submit. It's crucial to stay organized and make steady progress by creating an action plan. Aim to submit all materials by November 1, and try to work on them a little each day. If you don't hear from a school three business days after Finalist notification or encounter any issues accessing your portal, contact the school directly for assistance. QuestBridge is unable to inquire about application portal access for applicants.

Match Requirements typically fall into two categories:

Academic Requirements

Academic requirements refer to materials relating to your academic performance or interests. These are typically submitted through the school portals, and there can be a variety of questions, which may include supplemental essays.

  • Supplemental Essays: These essays can help you illustrate how you will positively contribute to the campus community and how the school can support your personal, professional, and academic aspirations. These supplemental essay prompts will vary by school. Some schools may use similar essay prompts to other applications (e.g., the Common Application), while others may use prompts designed specifically for QuestBridge Finalists. Supplements will be available in school portals after Finalist notification; however, some schools may post any required essay prompts earlier.
  • Official Transcript: Your high school counselor may need to provide an official transcript.
  • Standardized Test Scores: Standardized test score requirements vary across our college partners. Some schools are test-optional, while others will require test scores for Match Scholarship consideration. Carefully review each school’s testing policy to ensure you meet the school’s requirements. If you received new test scores after the National College Match deadline, you should send them directly to the schools you’ve ranked. If you submitted test scores to QuestBridge and test scores are not required by the schools you are ranking, the schools will give you the option to indicate whether or not you would like to have your test scores reviewed alongside the rest of your application. Please follow the instructions provided by the school or contact them directly for details on applying test-optional.

Financial Requirements

Financial requirements refer to materials relating to your household's income and assets. Some schools may require submission of official documentation to verify financial information, such as tax returns, W-2s, or other materials. If the most recent tax returns are not available, they may require submission of other documentation, such as the previous year's tax return or W-2s. Additional financial aid materials can be submitted through the IDOC (Institutional Documentation Service) if the school accepts it or to the school directly. If these forms are unavailable, we recommend contacting the school’s financial aid office directly for your next steps. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or the FAFSA, is a free application form that students submit to apply for federal financial aid. It is required for all students seeking federal student grants, work-study programs, and loans, and may also qualify the student for state-sponsored financial aid.

Early Application Policy: A Binding Agreement

Applying through the National College Match requires a serious commitment. Ranking colleges through the National College Match means that you are entering into a binding agreement with the college that if you are matched (i.e., admitted with a full four-year scholarship), you are committed to attending that college. National College Match applicants who rank colleges cannot apply to other colleges through Early Decision, Early Action, or Single-Choice Early Action (also known as Restrictive Early Action).
