Understanding PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program Requirements
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) plays a crucial role in ensuring the competency and safety of pharmacy technicians. A key component of this mission is the establishment and recognition of education and training programs that meet specific standards. This article delves into the requirements, benefits, and processes associated with PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Programs (REPs).
The Importance of PTCB Recognition
For pharmacy technicians seeking to advance their careers and demonstrate their knowledge, PTCB credentials, such as the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT), Certified Sterile Compounding Pharmacy Technician (CSPT), and various Assessment-Based Certificate Programs, are highly valuable. To be eligible for these credentials, the PTCB mandates that applicants complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, unless they qualify through an alternative pathway, such as equivalent work experience. A pharmacy degree is also acceptable in lieu of a recognized pharmacy technician training/education program.
PTCB-Recognized Programs are carefully reviewed to ensure they provide learners with the foundational knowledge necessary to succeed on PTCB exams. While these programs are designed to cover essential topics, it's important to note that they may not encompass all the information that appears on the exams. Therefore, candidates are encouraged to utilize additional resources, such as the PTCE Practice Bank® and the Pre-PTCE®, to supplement their learning and enhance their preparation. Access these test resources before your exam date to ease your nerves and help you prepare for success.
Pathways to PTCB Eligibility
While completing a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program is a primary pathway to eligibility for PTCB credentials, alternative options exist. These include:
- Equivalent Work Experience: Accumulating a minimum amount of equivalent work experience as a pharmacy technician can also fulfill the eligibility requirements.
- Pharmacy Degree: Possessing a pharmacy degree is considered an acceptable substitute for completing a recognized pharmacy technician training program.
To be eligible for our credentials, PTCB requires applicants to either complete a REP or earn equivalent work experience.

Becoming a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program
For institutions offering pharmacy technician education and training, becoming a PTCB-Recognized Program offers numerous advantages. The process to become PTCB-recognized for the CPhT Program is free and completed online. Becoming a REP ensures the program’s students are prepared and eligible to earn PTCB Certification.
Application Process:
Program directors of non-accredited education/training programs may apply online for their program to become PTCB-recognized. The process involves submitting an application for review and evaluation by the PTCB. The PTCB assesses the program's curriculum, faculty qualifications, and other relevant factors to determine if it meets the established standards for recognition.
Program Requirements:
To gain and maintain PTCB recognition, education/training programs must adhere to specific requirements, including:
- Curriculum Content: The program's curriculum must cover essential pharmacy technician topics, such as pharmacy law and regulations, medication safety, pharmaceutical calculations, and sterile compounding (if applicable).
- Program Length: The program must contain a minimum of one hundred sixty (160) hours of training, which shall not exceed six (6) months. For programs of any length, the Program Director may extend participation in the program for an individual employee.
- Assessment: The final test must include a minimum of one hundred (100) questions. The participant must achieve a minimum score of seventy percent (70%) on the evaluation to receive the certificate of completion. The evaluation must be graded by the provider.
- Program Director: The program must designate a Program Director to assume responsibility for the registered pharmacy technician training program.
- Faculty Qualifications: The program must assemble a faculty that meets the requirements set forth in Rule 64B16-26.351(3)(e), F.A.C. When the program subject matter includes pharmacy technician practice, a licensed pharmacist or registered pharmacy technician with expertise in the content area must be involved in the planning and instruction.
- Evaluation: The program must give participants an opportunity to evaluate learning experiences, instructional methods, facilities and resources used for the offering.
- Certificate of Completion: The program must furnish each participant with an authenticated individual Certificate of Completion.
Benefits of Recognition:
PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Programs receive several benefits, including:
- Enhanced Reputation: Recognition by the PTCB signifies that the program meets rigorous standards and provides high-quality education and training.
- Increased Enrollment: Students seeking PTCB certification are more likely to enroll in recognized programs, as completion of such a program fulfills a key eligibility requirement.
- Access to Resources: PTCB-Recognized Programs gain access to valuable resources, such as information concerning the performance of their students on PTCB exams.
- Use of PTCB Marks: PTCB grants to the PTCB-Recognized Education/Training program a limited, non-exclusive, revocable license to use the PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program Marks during the term of recognition for the limited purpose of identifying its relationship with PTCB.
PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program Responsibilities:
- Compliance: Maintaining compliance with all PTCB requirements and standards.
- Audits: Cooperating with PTCB audits to verify compliance with program requirements. PTCB will randomly select a percentage of recognized education/training programs for audit to verify compliance with the program requirements. PTCB has the discretion to audit the recognized education/training program at any time. Programs selected for an audit must comply with all audit instructions and requirements and must upload or otherwise submit copies of the applicable documentation.
- Data Sharing: Complying with data sharing agreements and providing accurate information to the PTCB.
- Ethical Conduct: Adhering to ethical principles and maintaining the integrity of the program.
Access to PTCB Exam Pass Rate Data/ License Agreement:
The recognized education/training program may access the Educator Pass Rate Summary Report, which provides student pass rate data and related information concerning its students’ performance on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE). Access to the Report is authorized only when at least (3) candidates identified as affiliated with the recognized education/training program have completed PTCE administrations within a minimum period of thirty (30) days. Pass Rate Summary Reports do not include any information concerning specific candidates.

Maintaining Recognition and Addressing Concerns
PTCB recognition is not permanent and is subject to ongoing review and compliance monitoring. The PTCB may conduct audits of recognized programs to ensure they continue to meet the required standards. Failure to maintain compliance can result in the suspension or termination of recognition.
Recognition Termination:
Either Party may terminate the recognition by providing thirty (30) days written notice of termination to the other Party. Upon termination of this recognition, all rights and licenses granted will terminate, including the recognized education/training program’s right to use PTCB Marks and the right to use the PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program Marks.
Additional Opportunities and Resources
Direct Billing: Eliminate the upfront cost to your technicians and reimbursement hassle for you. PTCB will invoice your organization directly for your technicians’ fees for every practice tool and credential you choose.
