Peru State College: A Legacy of Education and Opportunity

A Storied Past: From Mount Vernon School to Peru State College
Peru State's journey began even before Nebraska achieved statehood. On December 2, 1865, the Methodist Episcopal Church incorporated the Mount Vernon School, later sometimes reported as Mount Vernon Seminary or Mount Vernon College recognizing the need for a local institution of learning. The school was named after its location on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River.
In June 1867, the school's executive committee deeded the grounds to the State of Nebraska. This pivotal moment, on June 20, 1867, marked the birth of the first state-supported college in Nebraska. The first classes were held on October 24, 1867.
Over the years, Peru State has faced challenges and celebrated triumphs. In 1998, the Nebraska State College System considered various options, including closing Peru State College or relocating its campus. However, in 1999, they voted to keep Peru State in Peru. The Nebraska Unicameral Legislature introduced bill LB631 in 1999, which aimed to merge Chadron State College and Wayne State College into the University of Nebraska system while turning Peru State College into a community college.
Despite these challenges, Peru State has continued to thrive. In 2007, the college celebrated a record 472 graduates, with student enrollment continuing to climb.

The college provides two single-sex residence halls: Eliza C. Morgan Hall for women and W.N. Delzell Hall for men. There is also a three-building co-educational residence hall complex called the Centennial Complex. The Mathews building houses the Honors College, while Nicholas and Pate Halls are for upper-class students. W.N. Delzell Hall features the Gaming LLC.
Athletics: The Bobcats
The Peru State athletic teams are known as the Bobcats. The college offers on-campus intramural athletics for student participation. The Peru State football team won the 1990 NAIA Division II National Championship, defeating Westminster (Pa.) 17-7. Peru State College is joining the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
