Developed by Marcy Wood, Pathways Program Director, the program is a collaboration between the college’s Department of Teaching, Learning and Sociocultural Studies and District Partner.
This program offers a unique opportunity for communities to invest in aspiring educators who will then serve local schools. Participants benefit from full tuition coverage through a combination of forgivable loans and scholarships (excluding fees) and receive a monthly stipend of $1,000. The program also provides hands-on experience with experienced teachers in K-8 classrooms, with UA classes conveniently held at a District Partner location. The program is designed for completion in 17 months, spanning the spring, summer, fall, and spring semesters, with graduation in May of the final spring semester.
The Pathways to Teaching program has garnered positive feedback from participants and educators alike. Suzanne Mendoza, a long-term substitute teacher at Liberty Elementary School, highlights the program's impact on her ability to focus on her educational goals: "The paid tuition and monthly stipend allow me to put all my focus and energy into learning and completing my educational goals in becoming a teacher. Through the program, I will be well prepared to start teaching on day one after graduation." Brenda Glass, a computer clerk at Lauffer Middle School, emphasizes the program's role in developing future educators: "The Pathways to Teaching program offers quality education at the University of Arizona and is building another generation of teachers with the drive and determination to motivate, educate, and innovate district youth. The program is essential for providing Arizona, and more specifically district, with highly qualified teachers for the future." The strong community aspect of the program is also valued, fostering a supportive environment for aspiring teachers.
