Understanding PathwayOregon Scholarship Requirements

PathwayOregon is the University of Oregon's commitment to providing academically qualified, Pell Grant-eligible Oregonians with full tuition and fees, along with comprehensive academic and personal support. This article delves into the specifics of the PathwayOregon scholarship, outlining its requirements, benefits, and how it can be combined with other financial aid options.

What PathwayOregon Covers

The PathwayOregon program promises to cover tuition and fees for all recipients through a combination of federal grants, state grants, and university scholarships. These funds do not need to be repaid. Notably, GEO study abroad tuition and fees can also be covered using these grants and scholarships, up to the cost of 15 credits at the UO. Students interested in studying abroad are encouraged to plan ahead, apply for study abroad scholarships, and consult with financial aid and PathwayOregon advisors.

What PathwayOregon Doesn't Cover

It's important to note that the PathwayOregon award does not cover housing and other expenses such as books, meals, and supplies. To cover these additional costs, students may need to seek outside scholarships, work-study opportunities, or loans. Moreover, PathwayOregon funding is specifically for the academic year and does not extend to summer tuition. Students requiring financial assistance for summer terms should apply for summer funding through the financial aid office. Duck Excellence Scholars (DES) can consult with a CMAE advisor regarding summer funding resources.

How the Funding Works

The PathwayOregon financial aid package is structured to maximize available resources. First, any federal and state grants, such as the Federal Pell Grant and the Oregon Opportunity Grant, are applied to cover tuition expenses. Once these grants are allocated, UO scholarship funds are used to complete the PathwayOregon financial aid package, ensuring that tuition and fees are fully covered.

Many PathwayOregon students receive grants or scholarships that exceed the cost of tuition and fees. These additional scholarships or grants are listed in the financial aid offer letter. Most students receive a combination of grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study opportunities. Students are encouraged to apply for additional scholarships each year to help with expenses beyond tuition and fees.

Additional Financial Aid Resources

Even if a student is not eligible for PathwayOregon, they will still be considered for other forms of financial aid, including grants, work-study programs, loans, and scholarships. The key is to apply for financial aid on time by completing the FAFSA by February 15 to ensure processing by the March 1 deadline.

Work-Study Opportunities

Students who are offered work-study as part of their financial aid package can accept work-study on DuckWeb and find a position to earn those funds. Handshake, the campus job board, is a great place to start, using the “work-study” filter. While it is not necessary to be eligible for work-study to get a campus job, eligibility can make an applicant more appealing for certain positions.

Seeking Assistance with FAFSA

Students who need help with their FAFSA can set up an appointment with a PathwayOregon advisor by calling the front office at (541)346-3211.
