The Pat Tillman Foundation Scholarship: Investing in Leaders Through Education and Service

The Pat Tillman Foundation (PTF) invests in military veterans and spouses through academic scholarships, building a diverse group of leaders who are committed to service to others. Founded in 2008, the Tillman Scholars (TS) Program supports our nation's active-duty service members, veterans, and military spouses by investing in their higher education. Honoring a Legacy of Service

In 2002, Pat Tillman put his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals on hold to serve his country. After his passing in 2004, Pat’s family and friends started the Pat Tillman Foundation to honor and continue his legacy and his commitment to service, learning and action. 217 N. Army Ranger with 75th Ranger Regiment in Iraq and then Afghanistan, where he was killed in 2004. Pat Tillman made his mark as a husband, teammate, Soldier, and brother. He believed we should always strive to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.

The Tillman Scholars Program

The Tillman Scholars program unites the best talent and leadership from the military and military spouses and is not a gift; it's an investment in excellence and potential. Each year, Pat Tillman Foundation selects up to 60 Tillman Scholars who embody Pat's commitment to service, learning and action. The Pat Tillman Scholar Program invests in service members, veterans, and military spouses by providing both educational funding and comprehensive leadership development. Beyond financial support, Tillman Scholars engage in a high-impact leadership journey. They join a community of peers and mentors and gain access to year-round programming that strengthens leadership skills, expands career pathways, and fuels long-term growth.

Benefits of the Scholarship

Selection as a Tillman Scholar includes much more than financial support. Tillman Scholars also receive invitations to events like the annual Pat Tillman Leadership Summit in Chicago, entry to Pat’s Run, access to $1,000 mini grants to further their leadership development through training, certifications or events. 500 / 5000, the Aspen Ideas festival and more.

The scholarship covers educational expenses, including tuition and fees, books and living expenses. Per PTF guidance and campus coordination, funding may cover tuition, fees, books, and living expenses. Meet early with financial aid so external funds integrate cleanly with institutional awards.

Eligibility Requirements

The application is open to military veterans (active duty or separated, including National Guard & reserve) and spouses pursuing a full-time four-year, master's, PhD, or professional degree at a US-based accredited institution. service members, veterans, and military spouses are eligible for Tillman Scholarships. To become a Tillman Scholar, you must be a military member, veteran, or spouse.

Application Process

Prepare Your Application: You’ll prepare short essays, FAFSA/SAR and financial data, proof of service (e.g., DD-214 or service record), a character recommendation, a brief bio with photos, and your consent for a background check.
Gather Required Documents: Veteran applicants should confirm discharge documentation, match dates across resume and records, and ensure names are consistent across school and PTF systems. Spouse applicants should gather proof of the service member’s status and choose recommenders who can personally attest to leadership and community results. All discharged service members must provide their most recent DD-214 (please block out your SSN). Active Reservist or National Guard applicants may provide alternate military service verification forms. If an applicant progresses, we will request the following additional information at junctures in the selection process: student aid report from FAFSA; (2) photos from military service or with your spouse; institutional financial aid award letter; and completion of a background check.

Maintaining the Scholarship

Renewability depends on factors such as full-time status, academic performance, engagement, and proper use of funds. All criteria must be met in order to be renewed. Review of renewal status is conducted each June by the Foundation. Your cohort will receive renewal guidance; follow it closely and maintain communication with PTF staff and your campus aid office. Students who have to extend their expected graduation date must provide proof of extenuating circumstances. Scholarship funding can only be used toward a single post-secondary degree.

The Pat Tillman Scholarship is competitive. Thousands of applicants apply each year. PTF notes up to roughly sixty new scholars per class, with nearly 1,000 scholars supported across 160+ universities overall.
