Essay Contest Scholarship
The Optimist International Essay Contest offers young people the chance to express their opinions on the world. The approach can encompass a young person’s personal experience, the experience of their country or a more historical perspective.
Eligibility and Requirements
- The contest is open to contestants under 19 years old as of October 1st of the current Optimist International contest year (October 1 - September 30).
- Applicants must not have yet completed secondary school or its equivalent, including CEGEP students in Québec, Canada. There is no minimum age.
- Students must enter in the District in which they reside or are eligible to enter in their last home of record.
- Interested students must contact their local Optimist Club and submit an essay on the pre-assigned topic. For the 2025-2026 school year, the topic is: "How My Acts of Service Help Me Understand What My Community Means to Me”.
Awards and Advancement
- The top three winners are awarded $1000, $600, and $400 respectively.
- Club winners advance to the District contest to compete for a $2,500 college scholarship.
Important Dates
- All Club-level contests are held by early February. Student submissions are not accepted after the Club-level contests have closed.
- The deadline for Clubs to submit their winning essay to the District Chair is February 28, 2026.
- The deadline for Districts to submit their winner's information to Optimist International is April 15, 2026.
Oratorical/Speech Contest Scholarship
The Optimist International Oratorical Contest, first conducted in 1928, provides youngsters the chance to speak to the world. This contest helps youth gain experience in public speaking, perfect self-expression, gain self-assurance, improve communication skills, and provides them with the opportunity to compete for a college scholarship.
Eligibility and Requirements
- The contest is open to contestants under the age of 19 as of October 1st of the current Optimist International contest year (October 1 - September 30).
- Applicants must not have yet completed secondary school or its equivalent, including CEGEP students in Québec, Canada. There is no minimum age.
- Students must enter in the District in which they reside or are eligible to enter in their last home of record.
- Each contestant shall prepare their own speech. The contestant may receive advice in the preparation of the speech and may make minor changes or improvements in the speech at any time. For the 2025-2026 school year, the topic is: "The Moment I Realized I Belonged - My Definition of Community”.
Awards and Recognition
- The winners at the Club level receive medallions and Club level awards of (1st $300, 2nd $200 & 3rd $100).
- Zone winners receive a plaque.
Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
The Optimist International Communication Contest for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (CCDHH) offers an opportunity for children who are deaf or hard of hearing to present their thoughts in the community, gaining skills which can only come from signing or speaking to a large audience. Patterned after the Optimist Oratorical Contest, the Communication Contest For the Deaf and Hard of Hearing offers hearing impaired youth the chance to compete in speech or sign language.

Carol Waite Brennan Youth Appreciation Award
The Vienna Optimist Club gives the Carol Waite Brennan Youth Appreciation Award to high school seniors who, nominated by their school counselors, excel in academics, arts, athletics and community service while demonstrating ongoing kindness, good citizenship, optimism and character. The club renamed this award in 2002 in honor of the late Optimist Carol Waite Brennan [1961-2001], an Oakton attorney who served as president of the Vienna Optimist Club 2000-2001 and, with her husband Matt, started Ethics Day at George C. Marshall High School. The club presents each student with a $2,500 scholarship for college.
T.R. Cook Awards
The Vienna Optimist Club also awards high school juniors for six areas of excellence: academics, citizenship, fine arts, science, sports and technology. Applicants are selected by the faculty at Madison, Oakton and Marshall High Schools. T.R. Cook, a long time Optimist member and Vienna supporter, passed away in 2022.
Jim Houston Leadership Award
The Optimists present the Jim Houston award each year to a Madison High School senior who is a member of its baseball team and is a leader and a player of high character.
Peninsula Optimist Club Community Contributor Award
The Peninsula Optimist Club offers a $2,500 award to a graduating High School senior who has contributed towards and volunteered with the organization’s community fundraising events during their high school career.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.75 or above.
- Applicants must have volunteered in some capacity at a Peninsula Optimist Club fundraiser in the past 3 years.
- Recommendations can be from a teacher, counselor, coach, or employer.
Application Deadline
Applications will be accepted by the College Coordinator, Mr. Angel Gutierrez, or teacher, Ms. on Friday, May 2, 2025. Scholarship recipient(s) will be notified in writing of the decision by Friday, May 23, 2025.

Scholarship Funds
Scholarship funds are paid directly to the educational institution (University, Community College, or Trade School) and require a student ID number. Students shall begin using the funds during the immediate summer, fall, winter, or spring sessions. If students have not begun using the funds during this time, the educational institution will be asked to return the funds.
Peninsula Optimist Club Tradesperson Award
The Peninsula Optimist Club offers a $2500 Tradesman Award to a graduating High School senior who plans to pursue a trade school and/or an apprenticeship or certification program.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Applicant must have contributed towards and volunteered with our organizations’ community fundraising events during their high school career.
- Applicants must have volunteered in some capacity at a Peninsula Optimist Club fundraiser in the past 3 years.
Use of Funds
Award funds are paid directly to the trade school (i.e. EMT certification program, cosmetology school, etc) or in circumstances where training costs are covered by the program, funds could be used to purchase required tools and necessary equipment and materials needed for on-the-job training. In this case, funds will be paid directly to a vendor or retailer. The award recipient has one year to use the funds.

The Superior Optimist Club in Superior, WI, generously supports the Optimist Club Scholarship at UW-Superior.
Application Process
Applications usually open at the beginning of February and close at the beginning of March. Scholarships are awarded for the following academic year, beginning with the fall semester. Some scholarships, usually related to study abroad/away, always accept applications.
