Unlocking Potential: Understanding the Oakland Promise Scholarship Requirements

The Oakland Promise represents a transformative initiative with a powerful vision: to ensure that every middle and high school student in Oakland's public and charter schools has the access and support necessary to pave their way toward college and career success. This comprehensive program provides cradle-to-college and career preparation, offering financial, advisory, and resource support to young people of all ages. The Oakland Promise is committed to changing the trajectory of Oakland students from the time they are born, through the time they graduate from college and enter the workforce.

The Oakland Promise Scholarship: Opening Doors to Higher Education

The Oakland Promise Scholarship is awarded to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend a post-secondary institution immediately after high school. This includes 4-year colleges, 2-year colleges, or CTE (Career Technical Education) programs. The scholarship not only provides financial assistance but also comprehensive support to ensure student success.

Key Components of the Oakland Promise Scholarship:

  • Scholarship Funds: Recipients receive financial aid to help cover the costs of their post-secondary education.
  • Mentoring: Scholars are paired with mentors who provide guidance, support, and encouragement. Over 1,300 Scholars were paired with a Mentor.
  • Peer Advising: Students benefit from the advice and support of their peers, creating a strong network of individuals pursuing similar goals.
  • Networking Opportunities: The program facilitates connections with professionals and leaders in various fields, expanding students' horizons and providing valuable insights.
  • Persistence Support and Services: Oakland Promise offers a range of services designed to help students overcome challenges and stay on track to achieve their educational goals.

Eligibility and Application:

The Oakland Promise Scholarship application is typically posted on October 6th. For example, the High School Class of 2026, the Oakland Promise Scholarship application will be posted on October 6th, 2025.

Impact and Reach:

Over 79% of Oakland Promise funding goes directly to the young people and families in Oakland. Students receive $17 million in OP scholarships and persistence supports. The Oakland Promise initiative aims to triple the number of college graduates from Oakland within the next decade. Prior to the inception of OP, fewer than 500 Oakland public school 12th graders graduated from a 2 or 4-year college within 6 years of high school graduation each year.

Additional Programs and Support

Beyond the scholarship, the Oakland Promise offers a variety of programs and resources designed to support students at every stage of their educational journey.
