Navigating GPA Requirements for Nursing Programs
Gaining admission to a nursing program is a competitive process, with Grade Point Average (GPA) being a significant factor in the evaluation of candidates. Nursing programs seek students who have demonstrated academic excellence and possess the foundational knowledge necessary for success in the rigorous nursing curriculum. Admission to nursing programs is often limited-access, meaning that acceptance to the college or university does not guarantee admission to the Nursing Program. Students must apply separately to the nursing program and meet specific admission criteria. The School of Health Sciences or the College of Nursing provides detailed information about these criteria.
Holistic Admissions
Many institutions, such as Florida State University, employ a holistic admissions process. This approach assesses an applicant’s unique experiences alongside traditional measures of academic achievement. Community engagement and work experience are considered along with the overall grade point average and prerequisite grade point average to select the most qualified applicants for entry into the program. This allows admissions committees to use multiple sources of information to get the fullest picture of each applicant’s potential and helps ensure the potential for success in both nursing school and later as a professional nurse.
GPA Requirements for Different Nursing Programs
Associate of Science in Nursing (A.S.) Programs
Valencia College's A.S. Nursing Program, for example, requires students to satisfy specific admission requirements before submitting an application. Degree-seeking students enrolling at Valencia for the first time will have a limited range of courses from which to choose for their first 18 college-level credits. Within the first 18 college credit hours, you will be required to take ENC1101 (3 credits), and if applicable, SLS 1122 (3 credits) or HSC1004 (3 credits) for students pending acceptance to a health sciences program and a mathematics course appropriate to your selected meta-major (3 credits). The remaining courses will be chosen from the General Education Core Courses in humanities (3 credits), science (3 credits), or social science (3 credits), and/or the introductory courses within the A.S. degree programs.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Programs
For BSN programs, the GPA requirements can vary. Florida State University, for instance, requires applicants to have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 and earn a C or better in all prerequisite coursework. Please note, a C- (minus) is not accepted for prerequisite coursework.

The Joe C. Wen School of Nursing requires applicants to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 in all transferable courses and have fulfilled the University's American History and Institutions requirement.
Prerequisite Coursework
Nursing programs typically require specific prerequisite courses, such as Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Chemistry. A strong performance in these courses is crucial for admission. Some programs, like the one at UTHSC, require applicants to earn a C or better on all pre-requisite science coursework.
GPA Calculation
It's important to understand how nursing programs calculate GPA. Some programs may consider all college coursework, while others focus specifically on prerequisite courses. Some programs also have a grade replacement policy in effect for entering prerequisite GPA calculation only. To replace a grade, the number of hours must be equal, and the course content must be equal.
Additional Factors Considered in Admissions
While GPA is a significant factor, nursing programs also consider other aspects of an applicant's profile:
- Entrance Exams: Many nursing programs require applicants to take an entrance exam, such as the HESI Admission Assessment (A2) Exam or the ATI TEAS. A high score on these exams can strengthen an application. For instance, to be considered, you must have completed by the end of Spring 2026 semester the following courses at UK or equivalent courses as determined through the Transfer Center. The minimum grade acceptable in each course is C.
- Transcripts: Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended MUST BE submitted with your NursingCAS application. All transfer and non-FSU applicants must ALSO submit the Florida State University Transfer application.
- Experiences: The College of Nursing at Florida State University utilizes a holistic admissions process that assesses an applicant’s unique experiences alongside traditional measures of academic achievement. Community engagement and work experience are considered along with the overall grade point average and prerequisite grade point average to select the most qualified applicants for entry into our program.
- Recommendations: Some programs may require letters of recommendation from professors or healthcare professionals.
Admission for Registered Nurses
Individuals who have graduated with an ADN from a nationally accredited institution of higher education and/or a nursing diploma program are welcome to apply. After a full transcript review, a program plan, including additional core education and/or nursing requirements in accordance with the NSC policy on transfer credits for Previous College or University Work as outlined in the course catalog at the time of admission will be provided to the student.

Meeting Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet admissions requirements by the end of the semester that they apply to be considered for admission.
Criminal Background Checks
All accepted applicants are required to submit applications through Valencia for a criminal background check and drug testing. Applicants for Valencia’s Health Sciences Programs must be free of offenses that would disqualify them from a student clinical experience in a healthcare setting and must have their civil rights intact. This policy is in response to requirements by clinical agencies and state/federal regulations.
Health Insurance
Additionally, all admitted nursing students, must provide proof of current health insurance prior to enrollment into Florida State University.
