NC State considers GPA a very important academic factor. While NC State has a minimum weighted GPA requirement of 2.8 for test-optional consideration (equivalent to a B- average), the average admitted student has an unweighted GPA of 3.83. This signifies that successful applicants typically rank near the top of their class, showcasing a transcript predominantly filled with A's. If your GPA is at or below the school average, it becomes crucial to compensate with strong SAT or ACT scores to demonstrate your readiness for college-level coursework.
Course Rigor: Demonstrating Academic Preparedness
NC State seeks applicants who have challenged themselves with a rigorous high school curriculum. The university values students who have taken advanced courses, such as Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or Dual Enrollment courses, when available. Test-Optional Policy
As a part of the UNC System, NC State will be test optional for applicants with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or above. For the 2024-2025 application cycle, NC State is test-optional, which means you have the choice to submit SAT or ACT scores if you believe they will accurately reflect your academic abilities. On the admission application, you will be required to indicate whether or not you plan to submit SAT or ACT scores for consideration in the admission review process. Applicants with a weighted GPA of 2.8 or above will not be disadvantaged if you indicate you do not want scores to be considered in your application review.
SAT Scores: Ranges and Strategies
Half the applicants admitted to North Carolina State Raleigh who submitted test scores have an SAT score between 1300 and 1470. If you do choose to submit scores, the middle 50% of admitted students typically have an SAT score between 1280 and 1430. The 25th percentile SAT score is 1290, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1440.

NC State practices "superscoring" for the SAT. This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. NCSU will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and NCSU forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore. Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1360, it is recommended that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. Focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT. Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on.
ACT Scores: Ranges and Strategies
Half the applicants admitted to North Carolina State Raleigh who submitted test scores have an ACT score of 28 and 32. If you do choose to submit scores, the middle 50% of admitted students typically have an ACT score between 25 and 31. The average ACT score at NCSU is 29. The 25th percentile ACT score is 25, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 32.
NCSU is understood to superscore the ACT. If you have the opportunity to participate in activities that relate to your major of interest, you are encouraged to take advantage of those.

Essays: Telling Your Story
The application includes a number of short essays that provide insights into your interests, personal qualities, and how you will contribute to the NC State community. You’ll choose an essay prompt from the list provided by Common App or Coalition App so you can share your story in 650 words or less. NC State also has some additional short answer questions to help them get to know you better. Explain why you selected the academic program(s) above and why you are interested in studying these at NC State. If you are interested in being considered for NC State’s University Honors Program, there is an additional question required with a response of no more than 600 words available on the admissions application or on your wolfPAW account after you apply.
Letters of Recommendation
Recommendations are considered by admissions officials at North Carolina State University. For first-year students, NC State does not require letters of recommendation. However, they do consider them if they are submitted.
Major Selection
Before beginning your application, you should review the variety of majors offered at NC State. Make sure to select a major that fits your personality, interests, skills and career goals. At NC State, students are admitted directly into the program they apply to. For that reason, the review process is dependent upon your major and interest in the major. Let NC State know which academic program or two you are interested in and why. You can select up to two majors on the application depending on your interests. It is encouraged to select two different majors, because if you are not competitive for your first-choice major, you will be reviewed for your second-choice major. You should write about both your first-choice major and your second-choice major on your application.
Students interested in a studio-based major (Architecture, Art + Design, Fashion and Textile Design, Graphic & Experience Design, Industrial Design) must apply by November 1 in addition to submitting a 10-piece portfolio and design essay.

Application Platforms and Deadlines
Transfer applicants can apply for fall admission or spring admission. The application becomes available each year in August. The application deadline at North Carolina State University is June 1.
Required Materials
Every school requires an application with the bare essentials - high school transcript and GPA, application form, and other core information. To complete your application, you must send an official high school transcript to our office. Your high school counselor can submit your transcript through Common App, Coalition App, slate.org or another secure sending service such as Naviance or Parchment. Students studying at participating public high schools in North Carolina can request official transcripts be sent to our office using CFNC.
Application Fee
A non-refundable application fee of $85 is required.
Post-Application Procedures
It may take up to 24 hours after you submit your application for you to receive wolfPAW log in credentials. Here, you can check for missing items and stay up-to-date on the status of your application. Please note: If you apply in August before we begin processing applications, you will not receive your wolfPAW log in credentials until processing begins. You don’t need to wait for an official admission decision to submit your FAFSA, and students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. You will be notified of your admission decision on your wolfPAW account. If you completed your application on time and submitted all required materials by the deadline, you will receive a decision on the notification date corresponding to the application deadline for the semester you applied for.

- Waitlist - NC State is unable to admit all qualified students into the class.
- Deny - Unfortunately, some students will not be considered competitive for first-year admission. Denied applicants are encouraged to consider applying to NC State in the future as a transfer applicant.

Transfer Students
Your prior college work is the best indicator of your future success at NC State, but NC State acknowledges that you also bring unique experiences as a transfer student. It is recommended you have a minimum of 24 transferable college semester credit hours (or 36 quarter hours) completed or in progress before you apply to NC State.
