Early Years and the Intercollegiate Golf Association

The roots of the NCAA Men's Golf Championship can be traced back to the late 19th century. The Intercollegiate Golf Association, later known as the National Intercollegiate Golf Association, played a crucial role in the early development of collegiate golf. This organization sponsored the annual tournament and awarded titles from 1897 through 1938.

Early champions included:

  • Louis Bayard, Jr.
  • John Reid, Jr.
  • Charles Hitchcock, Jr.
  • F. O. A. L.
  • W. E. Clow, Jr.
  • H. H.

During this time, American golfers dominated the competition.

2021 Championship

The 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships featured intense competition and memorable moments.

Individual Championship

Clemson's Turk Pettit won the 2021 DI men's golf individual national championship. Pettit finished with a 7-under 273 over four days and 72 holes of stroke play, edging Oklahoma State's Bo Jin by one shot. Pettit played the back nine first and took his first lead of the tournament at the 17th hole. Jin led this tournament after the second and third rounds but was unable to become the first freshman since 2007 with a 2-over round. He salvaged a rough tee shot on 18 for a chance at a playoff hole before his par putt went wide, giving Pettit the title. Johnston was only one stroke behind after making birdies on 9, 11, 13 and 15.

Team Championship

After beginning with 24 teams in the championship, the field was narrowed down to eight for the quarterfinals. Arizona State earned the No. 1 seed after a 5-under team round. Oklahoma State was in control of that spot coming into the day but a 12-over round left the Cowboys at even for stroke play to finish second.

The eight teams that made it to the match play quarterfinals were:

In the quarterfinals, Pepperdine defeated No. 6 seed Florida State 3-1-1, and Oklahoma knocked off No. 5 seed Illinois 3-2-0. No. 4 Oklahoma defeated top seed Arizona State, 3-2, in Tuesday's second semifinal.

No. 3 Pepperdine and No. 4 Oklahoma faced off in the finals of match play. The par-4 3rd hole, which is 475 yards, is arguably the most difficult hole on the course with only three birdies so far, compared to a course-high 16 bogeys and two double bogeys. Clay Feagler's ace on No. 8 was a highlight that helped No. 3 Pepperdine knock out No. 2 Oklahoma State. Feagler won five consecutive holes, Nos. 8 through 12, including an ace with an 8-iron on the 187-yard No. 8.

Ultimately, the No. 3 seeded Waves beat No. 4 Oklahoma in Wednesday's match play final, 3-2, to take the title.

International Influence

While Americans dominated the early years, the championship has seen international players rise to the top. James McLean of Australia won in 1998, and Luke Donald of England won in 1999, marking a shift in the tournament's landscape.
