A Storied Rivalry: The History of Duke vs. Arizona Basketball

The Duke Blue Devils and the Arizona Wildcats, two of college basketball's most storied programs, boast a rivalry rich with memorable moments, legendary players, and captivating storylines. From regular-season clashes to high-stakes NCAA Tournament matchups, their encounters have consistently delivered excitement and drama. This article delves into the history of this compelling rivalry, exploring its key moments, iconic figures, and the unique factors that have fueled its intensity.

Early Encounters and the Elliott-Ferry Era

The two programs first met in an inconsequential meeting in the consolation bracket of a tournament in Pittsburgh in December 1961. However, the rivalry truly began to take shape in the late 1980s, highlighted by the battles between Arizona's Sean Elliott and Duke's Danny Ferry, two of the era's premier players.

Their first significant contest occurred in December 1988 at the Fiesta Bowl Basketball Classic title game, with Arizona securing a 91-85 victory. Elliott led the charge with 31 points against Duke’s aggressive man-to-man defense, while Tom Tolbert added 19. Ferry and Kevin Strickland countered with 25 points each for the Blue Devils.

Off the court, the rivalry simmered. Lute Olson, in his book, recounted an incident where Ferry allegedly made a comment about "hometown refs" near the Arizona bench, prompting a response from Olson and Coach K's subsequent involvement.

A February 1989 clash in East Rutherford, New Jersey, further solidified the Elliott-Ferry rivalry. Elliott once again emerged victorious, scoring 24 points, including a crucial 3-pointer over Ferry in the final minute. Despite Ferry's impressive stat line of 29 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, five blocks, and two steals, Arizona prevailed 77-75.

Elliott's late-game heroics, including a clutch 3-pointer and two free throws, sealed the win for Arizona. Lofton’s instincts to foul in that situation allowed the Wildcats to survive a 29-3 Duke run that took the Blue Devils from a 37-19 deficit with 4:05 left in the first half to a 48-40 lead with 15:34 left in the game. Ferry scored 12 of the points and hit a 23-foot 3-pointer to pull Duke within 36-30 at intermission.

The 1990s: Continued Battles and a Maui Title Game

The rivalry continued into the 1990s, with several notable matchups. In February 1991, Duke visited Tucson seeking to end Arizona's 60-game home winning streak. The game went into overtime, with Sean Rooks and Chris Mills hitting clutch shots to extend the game. Controversy arose afterward, with Muehlebach expressing disbelief at some of the calls.

The defending national champion Wildcats fell in the title game of the Maui Invitation as freshman guard William Avery scored 21 to lead third-ranked Duke. Miles Simon poured in 25 for No. 1 Arizona in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score.

The 2001 National Championship Game: A Contentious Affair

One of the most memorable and debated games in the series is the 2001 National Championship game. Duke emerged victorious, but the game was marred by a controversial no-call. Midway through the first half, Duke's Jay Williams appeared to foul Arizona's Jason Gardner, but no foul was called.

Years later, Williams admitted to the foul but offered no apologies. The impact of the no-call is still debated among Arizona fans, with some believing it significantly altered the game's outcome. Longtime Arizona assistant coach Jim Rosborough told me several years ago: “We heard this the next summer from anybody we saw when we went out recruiting - they honestly and truly felt it was the worst-refereed game they had seen to that point,”

Regular Season Games

The previous time the programs faced each other in a regular-season scheduled game at either Cameron or McKale was Arizona’s 103-96 win in two overtimes in front of 13,881 fans at Tucson on Feb. Matt Muehlebach, who never lost at McKale Center during his career, scored seven points during the second overtime, helping ninth-ranked Arizona extend the nation’s longest home winning streak to 61 games. Duke was ranked No. “Hey, this was a big game and you have to be at your best … but I won’t comment on it any further,” Krzyzewski told reporters afterward.

The 2011 Sweet Sixteen: Derrick Williams' Dominance

In the 2011 Sweet Sixteen, Arizona and Duke faced off in a highly anticipated matchup. Derrick Williams delivered a performance for the ages, scoring 32 points. Derrick Williams turned in one of the greatest halves of basketball in school history - 25 points, including going 5 of 6 from behind the arc - but the Wildcats still trailed top-seeded Duke 44-38 at halftime of this Sweet 16 game. Then everybody else showed up for Arizona, which unleashed a 19-2 run to take control, hounding Duke on defense and dunking as if the Blue Devils were an intramural team.

Arizona fans most remembered that game by Arizona fans for a no-call when Blue Devils guard Jay Williams rode the back of Arizona’s Jason Gardner as the players chased a loose ball midway through the first half. “What was I supposed to do?” Williams told local media in 2017 when ESPN’s GameDay was in Tucson for a UCLA-Arizona game. “I was 19 years old and I fouled Jason and everybody in the stadium of 45,000 knew I fouled him with the exception of those watching the game.

Recent Matchups and the Tommy Lloyd Era

In recent years, the rivalry has continued with both programs maintaining their national prominence. Fourth-ranked Arizona used its 2013-14 hallmarks - balance and defense - to win the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden.

In November, When the Blue Devils poked ahead 67-65 on a 3-pointer with 2:11 left, with Cameron Indoor Stadium rocking, Arizona kept a possession alive with an offensive rebound and then Pelle Larsson drove baseline and bounced a pass to Keshad Johnson, who had established himself on the opposite block for a layup. When the Blue Devils went ahead again at 69-67, it was Johnson again, this time off a feed from a driving Caleb Love, hitting a difficult short jumper over the taller Kyle Filipowski while falling down.

Arizona leads the series with Duke 6-5. The Blue Devils snapped a three-game losing streak to the Wildcats in their victory at McKale Center in November. Arizona is one of three Power 4 programs that had a winning record against Mike Krzyzewski with the Wildcats owning the most wins in that regard against the Hall of Fame coach. The Wildcats and Blue Devils have split their two games in the NCAA tournament with each other.

The meeting at McKale Center earlier this season was the third such meeting between the programs, with the Wildcats winning the first two games. Arizona defeated Duke, 91-85, in Tucson on Dec.

Sweet Sixteen

The Arizona Wildcats looked to keep their March Madness dreams alive as they faced off against the Duke Blue Devils for the second time this season when the teams met Thursday in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Men’s Tournament. “I imagine Thursday night it will be two very different teams then that played earlier in the season,” Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said before his No. 4-seeded team took on top-seeded Duke in the East Regional semifinals in Newark, New Jersey.

Caleb Love on facing Duke in the Sweet 16. “It’s a big matchup because it’s the next game,” Love said in the press conference following Arizona’s 87-83 win over Oregon on Sunday night. “It’s the only game that matters.

The Modern Era: NIL, Transfers, and Continued Excellence

In the era of NIL and the transfer portal, college basketball has undergone a transformation. While Cinderella runs and shocking bracket busters haven’t disappeared entirely with the likes of Colorado State and McNeese advancing past the first round, the new landscape has largely reinforced the survival of the fittest. “Our program was built on players teaching players,” Scheyer said.

Thursday’s matchup will feature plenty of star power, from Duke’s projected No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg to a slew of future lottery selections. A transfer from North Carolina, Love will face Duke for the 10th time in his career. His most famous moment? A clutch three-point dagger in the 2022 Men’s Final Four that sent Duke packing and North Carolina to the national championship game, cementing his status as a Chapel Hill legend - and a Durham villain. “I’m looking towards one game, and that’s Duke,” Love said.

In the Round of 32, Arizona had to battle back from an early 19-4 deficit against Oregon last Sunday in a reinvented Pac-12 rivalry matchup. Lloyd’s squad may be more confident now than it was in November, but Duke remains a force. Posting the No. 1 offense and No. 4 defense in the country this season, the Blue Devils showed just how explosive they can be in their second-round matchup against Baylor.

For Duke, while much of the national attention will be on Flagg, one of the key players to watch will be junior Tyrese Proctor. An Australian native, Proctor was a freshman on the sidelines when Love hit that infamous dagger in the Final Four. “It’s always a high-level matchup,” Proctor said of Love. Arizona will throw multiple defensive looks at Proctor, but slowing down one of the tournament’s hottest shooters will require a team effort. “We got to be more physical than them and hit on all cylinders on offense,” Love said.

Duke has adapted tremendously throughout the season, posting a historic run in conference play and winning 19 of their 20 ACC games, capping it off with an ACC championship. From the leadership of Sion James and Proctor in the backcourt to the two-way dominance of Flagg and 3-point ability of just about everyone on the team, the Blue Devils have built a roster that thrives under pressure. “I think just being able to get energy from players blocking shots, getting steals and those types of plays lead to kind of easier offense,” Flagg said.

Syracuse transfer Maliq Brown has added another key piece to Duke’s defensive scheme. His ability to guard positions 1-5 has given the Blue Devils added flexibility, allowing them to switch seamlessly on defense. The junior forward has been dealing with a shoulder injury and has missed Duke’s first two tournament games. The team said his status for Thursday was a game-time decision. If Brown is cleared to play, his presence could provide a significant boost for Duke’s defense, particularly against an Arizona team that thrives in transition.

“We know we play a really good Arizona team. A lot of respect for Tommy and his program. I think he’s one of the best coaches,” Scheyer added.
