Mastering Cross-Cultural Service: MTI's Holistic Learning Methods

Introduction

Preparing for long-term cross-cultural service requires a multifaceted approach that addresses not only language acquisition and cultural awareness but also relational growth and personal well-being. MTI (Mountain Training International) offers comprehensive training programs designed to equip individuals, couples, and families for the unique challenges and rewards of international ministry. These programs integrate various learning methods to ensure participants are well-prepared for effective and sustainable service.

Compass: A Holistic Pre-Field Training Program

MTI's Pre-Field Training program, known as Compass, provides a balanced learning experience through classroom instruction and intentional community engagement. This program focuses on fostering resilient relationships and healthy patterns for cross-cultural life. Participants benefit from a comprehensive approach that combines whole community training sessions, personalized coaching, and small group discussions.

Interactive Programming

Adults and children participate in interactive programming designed to enhance their understanding of cross-cultural dynamics and equip them with practical skills for navigating new environments. These sessions encourage active participation and create a supportive community where participants can share experiences and learn from one another.

Authentic Christian Community

Opportunities are provided to apply concepts from the training within an authentic Christian community. This hands-on experience allows participants to practice their skills and develop a deeper understanding of the principles being taught. It also shapes each person individually while offering a vision for meaningful relationships wherever God leads.

Key Components of MTI Learning Methods

MTI’s learning methods encompass several key areas, each designed to address specific aspects of cross-cultural preparation.

Language Acquisition

Compass equips learners with the skills, methods, techniques, and perspectives necessary to acquire any language. Participants practice proven methods that help them gain a fresh perspective on how languages are best learned. The training also develops the ability to produce new sounds and guides participants in creating a personalized plan for their language learning journey.

Cultural Awareness and Acquisition

Cross-culturally experienced trainers help participants grow in understanding themselves and their values, equipping them with tools and principles to step out of their comfort zone and enter their host culture in a healthy, sustainable way. This involves exploring personal biases, understanding cultural differences, and developing strategies for effective cross-cultural communication.

Relational Growth

At Compass, participants are challenged to grow in their relationship with God, themselves, and others. Cross-cultural living brings unique challenges for singles, couples, and families. The program is designed to build hope and confidence for the journey, specific to each stage of life. Honest preparation and practical resources help participants experience effectiveness, endurance, and personal vitality on the field.

Family-Focused Approach

MTI’s commitment extends to the whole family through the CHildren’s Intercultural Programs (CHIPs). From nursery to teens, the CHIPs program is thoughtfully correlated with the adult training in ways that are appropriate for each age and developmental stage. This provides common language that allows families to continue the learning process together beyond the classroom. Families with teens are encouraged to attend the Compass sessions starting in June or August.

Practical Aspects of the Compass Program

Each room features a bed, desk, dresser, and private bathroom. Community spaces include several fireplaces (both indoor and outdoor), private seating areas, and a game room with foosball, ping-pong, and air hockey. Nutritious Meals

The kitchen staff works to prepare food options that allow for a variety of offerings throughout the stay. Participants enjoy three meals a day and snacks during break periods.

Transportation

Two minivans are available to participants for transportation within the Monument/Palmer Lake area, providing access to gyms, grocery stores, and local restaurants.

Recreational Opportunities

Located in Colorful Colorado, there are many opportunities for outdoor activities nearby. Several trails encircle the campus, and a disc golf course is on site. The campus is also walking distance from the Santa Fe Trail and driving distance from several more hikes.

Participation Requirements

To participate in Compass, all individuals must meet the following criteria:

English Proficiency

Program materials, sessions, and group discussions are conducted in English. As such, English proficiency ensures all participants can fully engage with the content and connect meaningfully with one another.

Whole Household Participation

Compass requires whole-household participation. Families attend together as a shared experience, including children from six weeks old through high school graduation. This approach reflects the reality that overseas ministry impacts the entire family unit and prepares each member side by side. Married participants attend together as a couple. The program addresses relational dynamics, supports shared readiness for ministry, and provides space for individual growth.

Agency Representation

To foster diversity of perspective, participation is limited to no more than four household units from the same sending agency in each program session. Participants are notified during registration if this limit has been reached.

Cross-Cultural Service Commitment

Compass specifically serves those preparing for international cross-cultural ministry contexts, as these transitions involve unique challenges related to cultural adaptation and global engagement. However, if a domestic service situation involves similar cross-cultural dynamics or circumstances, individuals are encouraged to apply and explain their situation.

Minimum Service Term

Participants should be planning to serve for at least two years in their ministry context. Compass is best attended two to six months before leaving for the field. Exceptions are communicated on arrival.

Program Logistics

Meals and Weekends

All meals are provided. Weekends are unscheduled, and occasional short assignments may be given.

Registration Process

Registration follows three stages:

  1. Stage One: Create an account and complete a profile for each household member. Select preferred dates.
  2. Stage Two: Applications are reviewed, and approved applicants move forward.
  3. The remaining balance is due one month before the program start date. Programs frequently fill early.

Location and Transportation

MTI is physically located at 421 Highway 105, Palmer Lake, CO 80133. Free shuttle service is provided by MTI (12:00 PM - 2:30 PM) from the Colorado Springs Airport (COS), any Colorado Springs Hotel, and the Monument Park-n-Ride. Participants needing transportation outside of this schedule or arriving at Denver International Airport (DEN) will need to arrange their own transportation.

Arrival and Departure

Participants should schedule their arrival flight to the Colorado Springs Airport before 1:30 PM on Monday, the first day of the program. The MTI courtesy shuttle runs from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM on Monday only. Departure flights should be scheduled from the Colorado Springs Airport for 11:00 AM or later on Saturday.

What to Bring

Participants should bring:

  • Casual clothing with layers, as Colorado’s weather can change dramatically.
  • Shoes or boots for hiking and/or walking.
  • Toiletries.
  • Bible.

  • Lotion, chap stick, and sunscreen.
  • Child monitor (MTI has monitors available for use, but participants may bring their own if they prefer).

Facilities for Children

MTI has a large playground, climbing rocks, and a covered area for smaller children. Throughout Compass, children participate in the CHildren’s Intercultural Program (CHIPs).

MTI's Training Philosophy

MTI's programming is not "re-tread" bodybuilding, football, CrossFit, kettlebell, strength, or general fitness programming. MTI exists to "Improve Mountain and Tactical Athletes' mission performance and keep them safe." To that end, they have developed a unique research methodology aimed at identifying real-world areas of improvement and identifying immediately deployable mission-direct solutions.

Research Methodology

MTI employs a rigorous process to develop and refine its training plans:

  1. Deploy & Assess: The training plan is deployed at MTI's Wyoming facility. Training session and cycle issues are identified and fixed.
  2. Publish & Assess Again: The plan is published for purchase as an individual training plan and made available to subscribers.
  3. Iterate: MTI incorporates feedback from lab rats and athletes to revisit, update, and improve already published training plans.

Commitment to Effectiveness

MTI stands behind its training programs with a promise that "Our Stuff Works." This commitment is backed by testimonials from athletes who have used their Athlete's Subscription and seen tangible results.

MTI's Approach to Learning Styles

MTI integrates various learning styles into its programs to cater to different individuals' preferences and strengths.

Formal Learning

MTI provides structured classroom instruction and training sessions that follow a systematic curriculum. This formal learning environment ensures that participants acquire foundational knowledge and skills in cross-cultural service.

Informal Learning

The program also incorporates informal learning opportunities through community engagement, group discussions, and real-world interactions. Participants learn from each other's experiences and gain insights into the challenges and rewards of cross-cultural living.

Experiential Learning

MTI emphasizes experiential learning through hands-on activities, simulations, and practical application of concepts. Participants engage in real-world scenarios that mimic the challenges they will face in their ministry contexts.

Visual and Auditory Learning

MTI utilizes visual aids, instructional videos, lectures, and group discussions to cater to visual and auditory learners. These methods enhance comprehension and retention of complex concepts.

Kinesthetic Learning

The program incorporates kinesthetic learning through physical activities, hands-on training, and practical exercises. Participants learn by doing and develop their skills through direct engagement with equipment and tools.

Collaborative Learning

MTI fosters a collaborative learning environment by encouraging participants to work in teams, share ideas, and solve problems together. This approach mirrors real-world workplace dynamics and prepares participants for effective teamwork in their ministry contexts.

Self-Directed Learning

MTI supports self-directed learning by providing participants with online resources, study materials, and flexible learning options. Participants are encouraged to take control of their education and progress at their own pace.

Hybrid Learning Options

In addition to in-person programs, MTI offers hybrid learning options that combine remote instruction with minimal on-campus attendance. This approach provides flexibility for students who may have scheduling constraints or prefer a blended learning environment.

Real-Time Remote Classes

Hybrid programs include real-time remote classes that meet at specified times, allowing students to interact with instructors and classmates in a virtual setting.

Recorded Lectures

Students can access recorded lectures at their convenience, allowing them to review material and learn at their own pace.

On-Campus Lab Attendance

Hybrid students have opportunities to attend on-campus labs, where they can receive hands-on instruction and clarify any questions they may have.

Full Access to Resources

Hybrid students have full access to financial aid, tutoring, academic help, and career advice, either in-person or online.

Online Learning Options

MTI also offers fully online classes through its e-learning portal. These classes are entirely remote, using a Learning Management System (LMS).

Flexible Scheduling

Online classes offer added flexibility in completing coursework, with set deadlines and class structures.

Virtual Attendance

Teachers can track which students have completed coursework and fulfilled the virtual attendance requirement.

Online Forums

Instructors may measure progress and answer student questions through online student forums or discussion boards.

Current and Topical Lectures

The online lectures in MTI's fully online classes are current, topical, and structured to impart maximum practical knowledge to students.

Commitment to Quality

As with all its other programs, MTI's commitment to quality of education and resources for its students is its prime objective. All students in the online learning programs have access to tutoring, instructional labs, academic advice, financial aid programs, and career guidance.
