Internship Programs
MUSC actively seeks diverse candidates from undergraduate and graduate programs, both locally and nationally, for internships that provide impactful learning experiences. These internships can be full-time or part-time, depending on the facility's needs and the intern's availability.
Capstone Projects and Real-World Impact
A Capstone Project is a significant component of the Occupational Therapy (OT) program at MUSC. This research-centric project requires a substantial time investment in researching a chosen topic, as well as testing and implementing it in a relevant setting. The project includes a 14-week experience with a site mentor.
Morgan Shires, a graduating third-year OT student at MUSC, exemplified the impact of these projects by creating a fall prevention toolkit for the Parkinson’s population at the MUSC Wellness Center. This toolkit was developed following a needs assessment that revealed many people with Parkinson’s Disease (PWPD) desired to be more active but were limited by a fear of injury.
Shires's project involved applying her interests in pickleball and OT to the Wellness Center's program. Recognizing the potential concerns of health professionals regarding injuries in PWPD playing pickleball, Shires developed the "Pickleball Initiative for Parkinson’s University (PIU)" program.

The PIU program includes exercises designed to improve balance, coordination, and overall fitness, making pickleball more accessible and safer for individuals with Parkinson's. Participants in the PIU program showed marked improvement. Following each PIU session, participants are offered the chance to start the second phase of the pickleball program called “Put It In Play,” which is only available to those who have completed a session of PIU.
Shires collaborated with Kevin Smuniewski (site mentor) and the Wellness Center’s Clinical Exercise Program Coordinators Cindi Day and Chrissie Wojciechowski. This collaboration allowed her to observe various clinical exercise programs, including those for survivors of breast, prostate, and gynecological cancers.
Shires also worked on rotations in adult and pediatric inpatient rehab, gaining real-life experience with the populations she will encounter as an OT. Day plans to integrate Shires’s toolkit into all applicable clinical exercise programs, recognizing its value.
