Manhattan Early College School for Advertising: Shaping Future Advertising Professionals
The Manhattan Early College School for Advertising (MECA) provides students with a unique opportunity to gain a head start in the advertising and media industry. Through a blend of rigorous academics, hands-on training, and professional partnerships, MECA prepares students for college, careers, and beyond.
A Unique Educational Model
MECA is part of a select group of Career and Technical Education (CTE) schools that blend rigorous academics with real-life work skills. The school offers students the opportunity to earn a CTE-endorsed Regents Diploma and an Associate's Degree from the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) free of charge.
Students have the option to graduate in four years with a high school diploma and 20 college credits or to stay for six years and graduate with a high school diploma, a college degree, and two years of paid work experience. All graduates leave ready to enter into a wide range of careers and as strong candidates for 4-year colleges.
Curriculum and Hands-on Training
MECA's curriculum is project-based and blends art, technology, and creative problem-solving. Students engage in a rigorous curriculum that blends art, technology, and creative problem solving. The education program provides high school students with the access and opportunity they need to build enriching careers in the advertising industry. The school is committed to establishing a foundation of strategy, concept and craft as it applies to insightfully solving brand challenges.
The school also offers hands-on professional training through partnerships with advertising and media industry leaders. The biggest benefit of MECA is the internships, where students are paid and learn new things that can help them in any career they are interested in.

Leadership and Vision
MECA has been led by dedicated educators with a clear vision for the school's mission. Sarah Kaplan, the interim acting principal, has been an educator in the New York City public school system since 2000. She was a member of the founding team that opened Kingsborough Early College Secondary School (KECSS), one of the first unscreened Early College secondary schools in New York City, and has served as an advisor to students, taught English, led teacher teams, and collaborated with CUNY faculty.
Dr. Tossman, the founding principal, thanked the students and families for the privilege of leading MECA and for partnering with the staff to build the school from an idea into a reality.
MECA's Impact
MECA has already achieved incredible results, building high in-demand professional & technical skills. MECA prepares students to be a part of the constantly changing world. MECA not only instilled a sense of belonging from day one, but it gave students a sense of where they want to be in the future.

A Model for Advertising Education
In 2008, the 4As partnered with the New York City Department of Education to form the first four-year high school in the country exclusively dedicated to preparing students for careers in the advertising and media industry: the High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media (iAM), located in Brooklyn. Upon receiving certification for this flagship school, the 4As partnered with the City University of New York in 2014 to launch the first P-Tech high school of its kind.
The mission of the High School for Innovation in Advertising and Media is to provide academic and career competencies that will transform students into competitive candidates in advertising and media. The school, providing a rigorous and real-world, experience-based environment, will empower students to make well-informed decisions about their educational and professional futures.
iAM gives students a head start into the industry with classes that integrate educational curriculum with real life skills for the future.
