Navigating Law Firm Scholarship Requirements: A Comprehensive Guide

Pursuing a legal education is a significant investment, and understanding the landscape of law firm scholarships is crucial for aspiring attorneys. This article provides a detailed overview of scholarship opportunities, with a particular focus on the requirements and offerings at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (AJMLS).

Merit-Based Scholarships at Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School

AJMLS aims to make legal education accessible to both traditional and non-traditional students. Each successful applicant is automatically reviewed for merit-based scholarships during the admissions process, eliminating the need for a separate application. These scholarships are generous and awarded based on the applicant's academic achievements.

Ann Kimsey Scholarship

Each year, AJMLS awards the Ann Kimsey Scholarship to incoming 1L students who demonstrate a strong academic record coupled with exceptional character and leadership abilities. Recipients must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 at the end of each academic semester and summer session to retain the scholarship. Failure to maintain this GPA results in the loss of the scholarship, with no possibility of reinstatement. The scholarship is applied to tuition and fees upon matriculation. Full-time students receive the scholarship in two equal installments for the fall and spring semesters, while part-time students receive it over three terms: fall (37.5%), spring (37.5%), and summer (25%). Part-time students must enroll in at least 6 credit hours during the summer session to receive their full summer allocation.

Dean’s Fellowship Scholarship

The Dean’s Fellowship Scholarship is awarded to exemplary incoming students and is guaranteed as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory academic standing, defined as a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, at the conclusion of each academic semester and summer session. Failure to maintain satisfactory academic standing results in the loss of the scholarship.

John Marshall Scholarship

Each year, the Law School awards the John Marshall Scholarship to exceptional incoming students. The scholarship is guaranteed as long as the recipient remains in satisfactory academic standing at the conclusion of each academic semester and summer session of each academic year. Please note, if satisfactory academic standing is not maintained at the conclusion of any academic semester or summer session, the scholarship is lost and will not be reinstated. Full-time student scholarships will be awarded and divided equally for the fall and spring semesters (no portion of the full-time student scholarship is awarded during the summer session). Part-time student scholarships will be awarded and divided over three terms: fall semester (37.5%), spring semester (37.5%) and summer session (25%). Part-time students must be enrolled in 6 credit hours during the summer session to receive the full summer session percentage of the scholarship award. Please note, if a student switches from part-time to full-time enrollment, the scholarship award will not be adjusted to a full-time student scholarship. If a student switches from full-time to part-time, the scholarship will be adjusted downward to cover the same percentage of tuition as was covered as a full-time student. For example, if a student had a scholarship that covered 60% of his/her full-time tuition, the scholarship will be adjusted to cover 60% of the part-time tuition. Full-time enrollment means a student enrolled in 12 or more credits during any academic semester. Part-time enrollment means a student enrolled in 11 or fewer credits during any academic semester.

Important Considerations for Scholarship Recipients

Several factors can affect scholarship amounts and eligibility:

Enrollment Status: Switching between full-time (12 or more credits) and part-time (11 or fewer credits) enrollment can impact scholarship amounts. Scholarships are adjusted to cover the same percentage of tuition regardless of enrollment status.
GPA Maintenance: Maintaining the required GPA is crucial for retaining scholarships. Failing to do so can result in the loss of the scholarship without reinstatement.

Non-Merit-Based Scholarships, Funds, and Tuition Credits at AJMLS

In addition to merit-based scholarships, AJMLS offers several non-merit-based opportunities to help students finance their legal education. These scholarships often require a separate application after a successful admissions decision.

Alumni Referral Program

The Alumni Referral Program offers a one-time $500 tuition credit to accepted students referred by an AJMLS alumnus. The credit is applied to the student’s account after matriculation into the fall entering class and is exclusively for incoming 1L students. The credit cannot be retroactively applied after the first semester billing.

Alumni and Donor Scholarship Fund

Established in 2021 through the generosity of donors, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends, the Alumni and Donor Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to students. Due to limited funds, the application closes once capacity is reached.

American Cancer Society Scholarship

In recognition of the American Cancer Society's generosity, AJMLS offers a scholarship to students who have battled cancer or have a parent, sibling, or immediate family member who has battled or is currently fighting cancer. The scholarship committee selects recipients based on personal hardship and financial need. Two students are awarded $1,500 annually, which is applied to tuition and fees. There is no application process for this scholarship.

Andy Crawford Scholarship Fund

Established in 2011 in memory of Andy Crawford, an AJMLS 1L student, this scholarship supports deserving AJMLS students.

Bobby Lee Cook Scholarship

This scholarship was established by a very generous donation from attorney Bobby Lee Cook. Bobby Lee Cook was widely recognized for his career as a prominent trial attorney and his representation in high profile criminal trials. Awards may range from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on available funding. The application requires two essays.

Fry | Goehring Law Firm Scholarship

Randy Fry, Class of 1999, and Gulliana Goehring, Class of 2021, of the Fry | Goehring Law Firm, established this scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a student and can be applied to tuition and fees or received as a check for school-related expenses.

Georgia Bar Success Endowed Award

Created in 2022, the Georgia Bar Success Endowed Award supports students preparing for the Georgia Bar Exam by covering the costs of the bar application and exam preparation, including fees for fingerprints and driving records.

Gorinshteyn & Watkins LLC Law Journal Fellowship

Established in 2023, this fellowship provides financial support to the AJMLS Law Journal, offering an annual stipend for the Editor in Chief and contributing to the Law Journal’s general support fund. Note that this is different from the admissions merit scholarship of the same name.

This fund honors the memory of Melissa Hamrick, an Atlanta’s John Marshall law student who passed away in January 2009 from leukemia. Melissa was smart, funny, and witty. Although she was a student for only a short time, her adventurous spirit touched many at the law school. This scholarship fund was established by her classmate, Tracie Henderson (’10). Each fall, “every penny” in the fund is awarded to a deserving student in the form of a scholarship. There is no application process for this scholarship.

McCloud Law Firm Award

The McCloud Law Firm Award will be awarded to a law student who identifies as a member of an underrepresented racial or ethnic group and is in their final year of study to aid in preparation for the bar exam. Patent Bar Exam Fees Reimbursement

This scholarship will reimburse Patent Bar Exam fees for two students up to $500.00 who is a member of an underrepresented racial and ethnic group who is exploring a career in IP law. *This scholarship can be awarded for up to 2 students annually.

The Plugs Lawyer Scholarship

Tiffany Simmons, Class of 2009, is known for her dedication to justice and community empowerment. Recognized as ‘The Plugs Lawyer’ Tiffany has built a successful legal career, connecting and uplifting others through her expertise. The mission of The Plugs Lawyer brand is to increase the representation of Black female attorneys from 1.78% to 5% by 2025. Eligible students must be in their 2L year, and this scholarship is intended for underrepresented students. Describe a challenge you faced as a law student and how you overcame it. Please upload a letter of recommendation from a supervisor on organization or company letterhead. Essay requirement: The application requires one essay question.

Public Interest Law Society Award

Meaghan Eustice, Class of 2015, (Assistant Public Defender with the Atlanta Judicial Circuit Georgia Public Defender Council) believes that working as a public defender is one of the highest callings in the legal profession. The student must also provide one professional reference and/or one academic reference who can share the student’s passion about their interest in becoming a public defender. *The $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to one student annually, applied to tuition and fees or via check to the student for school related expenses to a full-time or part-time 2L, 3L, and 4L students are eligible to apply.

General Scholarship Information
