Lakefield College School: A Legacy of Academics, Community, and Character

Lakefield College School (LCS), affectionately known as The Grove, stands as a testament to a rich history and a commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals. Founded in 1879, this private day and boarding school, nestled north of Lakefield, Ontario, has evolved into a renowned co-educational institution for Grades 9 through 12. Its enduring philosophy combines rigorous academics with a comprehensive program encompassing sports, arts, and outdoor education.

A Foundation Rooted in History

The story of LCS begins with Sam Strickland and Col. Sparham Sheldrake, who established the school in Strickland's home, Grove House. Reverend Alexander Mackenzie, a teacher at the school, later became Headmaster in 1895 and acquired the institution from Col. Sheldrake. Mackenzie's leadership saw the construction of the school chapel in 1924 and the establishment of the school's core educational philosophy. He also oversaw the addition of new classrooms, dormitories, and a dining room.

In 1940, Gordon Winder Smith, fondly known as "Boodie," took the helm as Headmaster. Facing financial challenges and deteriorating facilities, Winder Smith, in collaboration with the Board of Governors, successfully eliminated the school's debt and initiated a program to upgrade facilities and construct new buildings and residences. Following the Second World War, the school's name was changed to Lakefield Preparatory School.

The school continued to evolve under subsequent Headmasters. Jack Eastwood Matthews was appointed in 1964, and during his seven-year tenure, the school experienced growth in enrollment and international recognition. In 1966, Lakefield Preparatory School was officially renamed Lakefield College School.

David Hadden's appointment as Headmaster in 1985 marked a period of significant change. In response to evolving societal norms and enrollment trends, LCS made the pivotal decision to become co-educational, welcoming its first female students in 1989.

Boarding Life

For a majority of LCS students, the school is their home-away-from-home. The boarding students live in twelve residential houses, each with an adult 'Head of House' who acts as a parent and an 'Assistant Head of House' who acts like an older brother or sister while the student is away from home. There are six boys' boarding houses, six girls' boarding houses, and one 'all-gender' boarding house. Each has an average of 23 students and two adults. The houses contain student dormitories, washrooms, common areas, a Head of House residence, and an Assistant Head of House apartment.

The small community also means students feel heard and supported by teachers and residential staff.

Campus Facilities

LCS boasts a variety of facilities to support its academic, athletic, and co-curricular programs. These include:

  • An outdoor artificial ice surface, The Bob Armstrong Rink
  • A boathouse with sailboats, kayaks, and canoes
  • A dance studio and weight room
  • Hadden Hall, a student recreation centre with a gymnasium, outdoor education wing, indoor climbing wall, dance studio, exercise facility, and common areas

Approximately $1.9 million in partial financial assistance is offered annually thanks in large part to funds made available through the support of alumni and friends of the school committed to paying-it-forward to the next generation.

LCS offers incoming students the opportunity to apply to receive one of 10 Entrance Awards of Distinction. These include the Canadian National Boarder, Environmental Responsibility, and Indigenous Leadership Bursary Entrance Awards of Distinction.
