December 2, 2024, at 10:00 AM EST. before you can apply to live on campus. fields in the application and submit. likelihood of receiving housing.
Step 1: Initial Application
The First-Year Housing Application is comprised of three steps, and it's essential to complete each step as soon as it opens. The application process typically opens around December 2, 2024, at 10:00 AM EST. Before you can apply to live on campus, you'll need to fill out all required fields in the application and submit it. Completing this step early increases your likelihood of receiving housing.
Roommate Selection (Step 2)
Roommate Selection is a significant part of the application process. After completing Step 1, you can select one preferred roommate once your time ticket opens. Time tickets are based on when students complete Step 1 of the application. You can find your time ticket for Roommate Selection in the Housing Portal starting Monday, March 10, 2025.
Creating a Roommate Pair
To create a Roommate Pair, one person in the pair must begin this step by selecting "create the group,” giving the group a name and setting a password. The person that creates the Roommate Pair is the Roommate Pair Leader. Once the pair is created, the Roommate Pair Leader can invite potential roommates to join the pair. Roommate Pairs are a maximum of two people.
It's crucial to communicate early and often with one another throughout this process. You will be able to see a summary of the roommates you are living with.

Room Selection (Step 3)
Room Selection for First-Year students begins on April 14, and spans into the month of May. Time tickets open in 20-minute intervals during business hours Monday through Friday. Time tickets are determined based on when students signed their License Agreement during the first step of the Housing Application. Each student has been assigned a specific time when they may begin Room Selection. As a reminder, First-Year and Upper Class students are not able to live in the same communities and will only be able to see the available units for their classification whenever their time ticket begins.
You can find your Room Selection time ticket in the Housing Portal. The first place is on the main "Term Selector” page. Click on “Roommate & Room Selection,” and you will see a summary of your pair.
Important Considerations for Room Selection
- Roommate Pair Leader: Make sure the group member with the earliest time ticket is selected as your Roommate Pair Leader.
- Limited Availability: Since housing options are limited and space will fill quickly, prioritize finding a room on campus above attempting to live with others outside your Roommate Pair. KSU cannot guarantee that there will be units available for groups of 3 to 4 people when your time tickets open.
- Room Configurations: Be aware that room configurations are similar to what you might like, but they are not exact, depending on the orientation of the rooms. Most rooms are double occupancy bedrooms, which means there are two beds in one bedroom.
What to Do If You Miss Room Selection
If you don’t select a bed and KSU runs out of available rooms, you will need to place yourself on the waitlist. Housing and Residence Life does not place students on a waitlist automatically; you must add yourself to the waitlist.
Changing Your Room Selection
If you have not paid the Room Booking Fee, you are able to change your room selection in the Housing Portal. Students who have a Roommate Pair Leader place them into a room and students who are not in a Roommate Pair have 48 hours after selecting or being placed into a room to pay their $75 Room Booking Fee. If you do not pay this fee within 48 hours, your reservation will be dropped, and your room will go back into the available room pool.
Cancelling an Existing Booking
If you added a room to your cart and confirmed your booking, you will be asked to complete a form indicating your acceptance of the terms for canceling your existing booking. If you are part of a Roommate Pair, making this request will dissolve your Roommate Pair, and you will NOT be able to join or create another one.
Special Housing Options
Room Selection for The Academy, Ascend and The Outfit is managed by the programs or departments overseeing these housing types. Eligibility for these accommodations is determined solely by each program's specific criteria.
Renter's Insurance
Renter’s insurance is optional but highly encouraged; this will protect you from paying out-of-pocket costs if there is damage to your personal property or Housing and Residence Life’s property while living on campus. Housing and Residence Life has a partnership with GradGuard to provide renter’s insurance to on-campus residents for $139 per year. In Step 1 of the Housing Application, students can indicate interest in this service. GradGuard will communicate directly with students when it is time to enroll.
Move-In Day
To make the Move-In process as smooth as possible, we ask that you please bring no more than one car for the resident and one car for their guest(s)-two (2) vehicles total. We kindly ask that students bring no more than 2-3 people to help them move in. Unfortunately, Housing and Residence Life cannot accommodate any Early Move-In requests unless you are in a special population, including but not limited to “The Marching Owls”. Students who are participating in these groups received Early Move-In communications.
Connecting with Roommates
You can reach your roommate(s) through the Housing Portal where you will see a summary of the roommates you are living with. Contact them to share your cell phone number and social media handles.
What to Bring
We will have a limited number of bins available to use on Move-In Day.
