A History of Kansas Jayhawks Baseball
The University of Kansas Jayhawks baseball team has a long and storied history, representing the university in the Big 12 Conference of NCAA Division I. From its humble beginnings as a club sport to its College World Series appearance, the program has seen many memorable moments.
Early Years and Formation
While baseball officially became a varsity sport at the University of Kansas in 1880, the seeds were sown much earlier. Club baseball was already a popular activity on campus, with six baseball letters awarded as early as 1874. Before its recognition as a varsity sport, baseball clubs representing the university played games against local area teams. In 1867, a team from the University of Kansas faced off against local clubs such as the Topeka Shawnees and the Lawrence Kaw Valleys at the Kansas State Fair. These early games laid the foundation for the program's future.
The 1993 College World Series Run
The pinnacle of the Kansas Jayhawks baseball program came in 1993 when the team made its first and only appearance in the College World Series (CWS) in Omaha, Nebraska. The team was led by All-Americans Jeff Berblinger, Jeff Neimeier, and Jimmy Walker.
Mideast Regional Triumph
The Jayhawks' journey to Omaha began at the Mideast Regional in Knoxville, Tennessee. After an initial setback against Fresno State (7-4), the team bounced back with a 3-2 victory over the host, Tennessee. Freshman pitcher Jamie Splittorff, son of former Kansas City Royal Paul Splittorff, earned the win, pitching 8 1/3 innings.
The Jayhawks then dominated Rutgers (8-2) and Clemson (9-1), setting up a rematch with Fresno State in the Regional Final. Coach Dave Bingham made a strategic move, starting Walker, who had primarily been a reliever, for the crucial game. Walker delivered a complete game performance, leading the Jayhawks to a 10-inning victory filled with late-game drama.

Down 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth with one out, Berblinger tripled. With two outs, Josh Igou's infield hit allowed Berblinger to score, forcing extra innings. In the tenth, Brent Wilhelm scored on Darryl Monroe's hard-hit ground ball to shortstop, securing the regional title for Kansas.
College World Series Experience
The joy of reaching Omaha was short-lived. The Jayhawks lost their opening game to Texas A&M and were then eliminated by Long Beach State, resulting in an early exit from the CWS.

The Jayhawks have had several other notable postseason appearances.
