Squires Student Center
The Squires Student Center offers several key student positions:
- Squires Student Building Manager: This prominent role entails ultimate responsibility for the smooth and efficient operations of Squires Student Center during assigned shifts. The position demands exceptional leadership abilities, interpersonal skills, accountability, and the capacity to supervise and delegate effectively. It is considered an invaluable senior experience.
- Operations Specialist: These specialists primarily work with event setups and assist with the general operation of Squires Student Center during their shifts. - Information Specialist: Positioned at the Squires Welcome Desk, Information Specialists provide customer service. They also manage the lost and found system, Crowd Find, for items brought to Squires Student Center.

They are trained to maintain the bowling machines and other equipment in the space to ensure a positive user experience for all customers and guests.

- Graphic Designer/Videographer: This position conceptualizes and creates graphic needs for Student Engagement and Campus Life. The role involves developing storytelling ideas and fulfilling assignments in collaboration with the ExperienceVT Communications Manager. Projects may include news-style videos, videos made for social media sharing, photography for print and digital projects (including social media and web), and event coverage tied to ExperienceVT. The goal is to use photos and video to build meaningful connections and encourage community engagement at Virginia Tech.
Event Services
Event Services provides several student positions related to event planning and management.
- Reservations Assistant: This is an entry-level position providing frontline customer service to university departments, student organizations, and non-university entities seeking to schedule reservations in SECL-managed campus spaces for their events. Reservation Assistants must participate in team meetings and all required trainings. This position reports to the Reservations Manager and will also work under the supervision and direction of the other professional staff, including the Assistant Director.
- Lead Reservations Assistant: This is a promoted position for Reservation Assistants who have demonstrated proficiency and reliability. Leads are responsible for handling all Reservation Assistant tasks when they’re not available, as well as providing front line customer service for university departments, student organizations, and non-university entities who are looking to schedule reservations in Campus Common Space locations. This position has elevated expectations to communicate and maintain various reservation requirements pertaining to forms, documents, and/or permits, communicate with various campus stakeholders and facility managers, attend Lead focused trainings and meetings, as well as other general office tasks and administrative projects as assigned.
Maintenance and Operations
These positions ensure the smooth functioning of SECL facilities.
- Student Maintenance Assistant: The Student Maintenance Assistant will perform preventative maintenance tasks throughout SECL facilities: Squires and Johnston Student Centers, Chapel, and Graduate Life Center. They will also assist the SECL Maintenance Staff with various projects in both Student Centers.
Off-Campus Housing Support
- Student Liaison: The Student Liaison supports the missions of Off Campus Housing by providing students and parents with education, information and student-based services. This position involves facilitating educational presentations, providing university information, and helping maintain the VTOCH area.
Other Opportunities
- Passport Office Attendant: Selected applicants process applications and review them for authenticity at the Passport Office. A big key to success in the Passport Office Attendant position is having a flexible schedule while being organized on your shift.
- Gallery Attendant: Gallery attendants provide assistance to the art program director by managing front desk operations and overseeing the security of the gallery.
- Production Technician I: This is an entry-level position within Production Services, providing labor, audio, video, and lighting support for events taking place in the Squires Student Center, Burruss Auditorium, Graduate Life Center, and other campus indoor and outdoor venues. This position reports to the Production Services Manager but will work under the leadership of the Production Technician II and student Supervisors to learn basic sound reinforcement, audio, video and lighting principles and systems operation.
- Production Services Administrative Assistant: This position provides office support to the full-time staff in Production Services by assisting in core administrative duties of the office. This position will be responsible for incoming information to the Production Office and ensuring its effective route to the correct individual, keeping information in a centralized place, and maintaining event records and information. Additionally, this position ensures that someone remains in the office during working business hours to greet clients, field client questions and media, and provide assistance when needed.
- Engagement Ambassadors: Engagement Ambassadors are responsible for helping fellow Hokies find their community through peer advising and student organization membership. Engagement Ambassadors also support student leaders as they identify ways to help their organizations thrive at Virginia Tech. These goals will be accomplished through social media and mass communication, peer advising, workshop facilitation, and managing the student organization resource center, The Source. Project focus areas include but are not limited to Organization Outreach, New Organization Support, and Organization Recognition.
- Programming Interns: The Programming Interns are the responsible for weekly student experiences. The primary responsibilities of the intern team will be planning and executing programmatic opportunities for the VT community, along with supporting other programs within the department.
Important Considerations for Student Employment
- Eligibility: Students who plan to work during the school year must be prepared to present physical documentation of identity and work eligibility. Students should bring originals of the acceptable physical documents to campus and be ready to show them when completing the I-9 form.
- I-9 Form: Original documents are required to complete the I-9 form. The I-9 form and presentation of physical identity and work eligibility documents must be completed by the set deadlines or employment will be delayed or terminated.
