Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre: A Legacy of Healthcare and Education in Pakistan

Introduction

Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) in Karachi stands as a flagship of public healthcare and medical education in Pakistan. From its humble beginnings as a military hospital, JPMC has evolved into the biggest and best-equipped public sector hospital in the country, offering quality health care services and training opportunities. This article explores the rich history of JPMC, tracing its development from its inception to its current status as a leading medical institution.

Early Years: From Military Hospital to Public Service

JPMC's story began in 1930 as a Medical Corps Hospital, exclusively dedicated to providing medical aid to military personnel. After the creation of Pakistan in 1947, a significant turning point occurred. Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the father of the nation, granted his approval to lend his name to the hospital, with the crucial condition that it be opened to the public. This decision transformed the hospital's mission, expanding its services to cater to the healthcare needs of the general population.

Karachi, being the capital city of Pakistan at the time, experienced a massive influx of Federal Government employees and their families. This surge in population further emphasized the need for a well-equipped and accessible medical facility, solidifying JPMC's role in serving the community.

Integration with Dow Medical College and the Establishment of BMSI

In 1952, a significant step towards establishing JPMC as a center for medical education was taken when Dow Medical College (DMC) was attached to Jinnah Central Hospital (JCH). This collaboration facilitated the integration of clinical practice with academic learning.

Recognizing the importance of basic sciences in medical education, the National Assembly of Pakistan authorized the establishment of the Basic Medical Sciences Institute (BMSI) in August 1954. Initially established at DMC, Karachi, the government later decided to relocate BMSI to a building situated at the site of JCH.

The establishment of BMSI was a collaborative effort, with Indiana University playing a crucial role. Led by Dr. Paul A. Nicoll, Professor of Physiology, along with Dr. Osgood D Priddle, Professor of Pharmacology, and Dr. Rolla N. Harger, Professor of Biochemistry, the Indiana University staff spearheaded the development of the institute. BMSI comprised six departments and laboratories, focusing on Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Physiology. It was equipped with the latest medical technology of the time, making it a leading medical institution. The official opening ceremony was held on April 11th, 1959, with President of Pakistan, General Muhammad Ayub Khan, President of Indiana University, Dr. Harman B. Wells, and Director General Health, Col. M. Jafar, gracing the occasion. The first class of students was inducted on June 1st, 1959.

Expansion and Development of JPMC

With the establishment of BMSI, JPMC became a comprehensive medical center, encompassing patient treatment, higher medical education, training, and research. JPMC comprised a cluster of buildings spread over 148 acres. Over time, new buildings were constructed to accommodate the growing needs of various evolving specialties.

The first batch of students started attending their classes in a building that was at one time, the Ob/Gyn ward of JPMC. This building, originally an army barrack constructed in 1865 and handed over to JPMC in 1959, became known as the "Old Block" of the college. It housed the departments of Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry. Later, a new academic block was constructed to house the departments of Pathology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, and Community Medicine, equipped with modern audio-visual teaching facilities, laboratories, museums, and administrative offices.

Sindh Medical College was initially affiliated with the University of Karachi and later associated with Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS). Dr. Masood Hameed Khan is the Vice-Chancellor of DUHS. Dr. Umer Farooq is the current Principal of Sindh Medical College.

Sindh Medical College held the distinction of having students from all over the country and overseas, providing a diverse and enriching learning environment.
