Indiana State Sycamores Baseball: A Legacy of Excellence

The Indiana State Sycamores baseball team represents Indiana State University in NCAA Division I baseball. As a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, the team has a rich history marked by success, memorable moments, and a commitment to excellence. From their inaugural season in 1896 to the present day, the Sycamores have established themselves as a formidable program with a dedicated fan base. With over 2,200 victories, 12 All-Americans, and 26 Major Leaguers, the Sycamores have a strong tradition of producing exceptional talent.

Early Years and Rise to Prominence

The Indiana State Sycamores baseball program began in 1896. In 1958, the team appeared in the NAIA Baseball World Series. In 1964, they won the NAIA "Midwest" District Championship.

The 1986 College World Series Season

The 1986 season stands as the pinnacle of Indiana State Sycamores baseball history. Coached by Bob Warn, the team achieved a remarkable 48-21 record and made its only appearance in the College World Series. A freshman second baseman named Mitch Hannahs sat on the bench watching as Indiana State made its only appearance in its 123-year history in the biggest stage in college baseball. This historic season remains a source of pride for the program and its supporters.

Recent Success and the Mitch Hannahs Era

In recent years, the Sycamores have experienced a resurgence under the leadership of head coach Mitch Hannahs, who was a player on that 1986 team. In his sixth season, he has catapulted his team to its best start in program history. Longtime followers of Indiana State baseball are calling this season's team the most talented since 1986. Hannahs, an All-American for the Sycamores and a former Milwaukee Brewers draft pick, has instilled a culture of hard work and determination within the team.

The Current Season

They came out on a tear, opening their season with seven straight wins. Their record stands at 27-8. They've beaten two ranked teams - No. 24 Michigan, 8-7 in 10 innings in Ann Arbor, and No. 25 Illinois, 3-1 at home. Five of their losses have been by just one run.

Hannahs said the team is still working to get all the phases clicking at once. "We've pitched it well. We haven't hit it well. We've hit it well, maybe we didn't pitch it well," he said. "We pitched and hit it well, but we didn't play that well defensively, maybe we didn't run the bases well. So I think getting all those parts playing all at that same time, we may have that moment."

Senior pitcher Tyler Whitbread has been getting questions on campus. Kids in his class are interested in the baseball team. They want to know if the Sycamores are ranked. Pitching has been one of the brightest spots for Indiana State this season. Sycamore pitchers have allowed 107 earned runs in 310.2 innings. The team's 3.10 ERA ranks 12th nationally. Seven pitchers have ERAs lower than 2.75 through 35 games. Starting pitcher Triston Polley has a 1.78 ERA in nine starts and 60.2 innings while Jake Ridgway has a 2.40 ERA in 18 appearances out of the bullpen. Whitbread is the weekend Sunday pitcher. He said beating Illinois last month was one of his favorite moments. The season-opening sweep in Jacksonville was a close second. Whitbread thinks this team can go far - just as far as his coach's 1986 team. "Our goal," he said, "is obviously the College World Series."

Clay Dungan was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week. He started all five games last week at shortstop, collecting nine base hits for a .429 batting average. He scored seven runs, drove in five runs and collected a team-high 17 total bases. Against Michigan, he went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored in that extra-inning victory.

Dungan and Hannahs said the strength of the veterans on the team has led to this year's success. The roster has four players who aren't juniors or seniors. "It's an older team. A lot of times age doesn't mean maturity, but in this case we have an older team and they are very mature young men," Hannahs said. "They work very hard. From a coaching standpoint, they require very little. Usually when you have a player-driven team, it's a successful team." Dungan said the team is as focused as any he's seen. "We just come in the park the same way we have the whole year and not looking at any team different," he said, "just playing our game of baseball and what will happen, will happen."

Competing with the big boys, beating ranked opponents has been the best part of the season so far, Dungan said. "Knowing the work we put in is going to pay off," he said. "We know as a group, the world outside of here may not know we have the talent to do it, but we know that we have the talent to do it."
