In 2023, the number of Indian students studying in the US reached a record high of 268,923, marking a 36% increase from the previous year. New York, with its substantial community of over 32,000 Indian students, has become a focal point for initiatives aimed at supporting this demographic. Indian students and professionals constitute 25% of the over one million international students in the US. The Indian Consulate in New York continues to support them.
Internship Opportunities: A Gateway to Professional Growth
A key component of this initiative is a new portal that connects Indian students with internship opportunities across the United States. This platform serves as a bridge between students and potential employers, offering a valuable resource for career development. Several Indian and American companies and organizations have agreed to consider deserving Indian students for internship opportunities.

New York State Indian Aid (NYSIA)
In 1953, the NYS Education Law §4118 was enacted. As mentioned above, it provides funding for eligible students enrolled in approved institutions of higher education pursuing an approved undergraduate degree or certificate (2 year and 4 year). Also, grants are available for up to 5 years for baccalaureate programs requiring 5 years of study. The student must be a resident of NYS and be on the official tribal roll of a NYS tribe or be the child of an enrolled member of a NYS tribal nation. NYS tribal Nations include the Haudenosaunee tribes (St. The student must have graduated from an accredited high school or attained a high school equivalency diploma. Eligible students must apply to the State Education Department each semester to receive NYSIA. Students should submit application materials before July 15 for the fall semester, December 31 for the spring semester, and May 20 for the summer semester.
