Beginning in 1976 in the Washington, DC area, the IECA describes itself as a “not-for-profit, international professional association representing experienced independent educational consultants." Registration is now open for the #IECA 2026 Summer Training Institute! All sessions will be recorded and available to registrants through Sept. 30, 2026. Both current IECA members and non-members are welcome. The IECA summer institute is an event that spans several days - usually 4 - and is aimed at newer consultants. Throughout the course of the event, consultants learn how to build and promote their practices. In addition, if you are a newer entrant into the educational consulting market, you can sign up for the five-day Summer Training Institute. The Institute ensures an extensive curriculum in counseling and communication skills, small business management, and knowledge within one’s specialty, which will be led by successful and experienced faculty. There will also be interactive discussion sessions and resources for attendees as well. Of course, throughout the year, IECA hosts webinars and workshops, which members can attend at no added cost. They will be available for educational consultants in all specialty areas.

Maintaining Ethical Standards: The IECA's Commitment
The main difference between other independent educational consultants and those who are members of the IECA is the level of standards that each member is held to. Because IECA consultants are committed to the highest ethical standards of practice, families will find that our members have the student’s best interest as their sole focus. IECA members sign an annual pledge that governs their interactions with colleges, students, and parents. They agree to avoid any action that distorts or misrepresents a student’s record or interferes with a university’s ability to accurately evaluate a student. The IECA Principles of Good Practice are sent to every approved member of the association. It's a short, but important document that outlines what the organization expects from its members - the IECA code of ethics. Each of these sections goes into detail about the type of behavior that independent educational consultants should adhere to when facing specific situations.
Membership Levels and Requirements
Becoming an IECA professional requires that its members meet the criteria set forth for each level. IECA membership requirements and eligibility vary depending on the membership level. There are currently three to choose from: Student, Associate and Professional. There's also an in-depth application and a non-refundable application fee of $100. These fees are later applied to dues upon acceptance. The IECA membership application is available online for anyone to complete. Each section collects comprehensive information to help the association decide whether you meet the criteria for approval. Regardless of what membership level you apply for, you'll have to upload specific documents including references and a resume. Some applicants may be invited to interview to provide more information before a decision is handed down.
The IECA offers multiple tiers of membership depending on the background of the applicant, and those tiers are labeled as Professional, Associate, and Student Membership.
Professional Membership
IECs who have demonstrated a professional mastery with many years of experience may opt for this level of membership. The dues for a Professional membership are $600 annually.

Three years of experience in educational placement counseling or admissions, including a minimum of one year of independent educational consulting.
A master’s degree or higher in a relevant field, or a combination of training and experience that demonstrates a mastery of the profession.
Minimum number of students advised (during the previous five years) on school, college, or program admission. Either:
- a) 35 students advised in private practice; OR
- b) 50 students advised: a minimum of 10 students advised in private practice; the balance personally advised as a counselor or admission professional.
A minimum number of evaluative campus visits during the previous five years within each specialty area (only specialties you choose for yourself apply):
- Boarding/Day Schools: 25 visits
- College: 50 visits
- Graduate & Professional School:* no visit requirement
- LD Schools/Programs:* 25 visits
- Therapeutic Programs:* 50 visits.
(*A supplemental application form is required when you add these specialty designations. Note: We have temporarily updated our visit requirement to allow for virtual visits. Virtual visits will be allowed to be included in this list starting from the year 2020. Virtual visits can be included at a 2:1 ratio for those visits that have been provided through IECA and at a 3:1 ratio for those completed outside of IECA. These visits can be submitted for up to 40% of the total towards the requirement.
Three professional references. Suggestions for references include:
- College or independent school admissions officers
- Psychologists/counselors
- Other educational counseling professional with whom applicant has worked in the application process
- An IECA member
- Client family
- Should not be a relative of the applicant

Associate Membership
For IECs who are new to the field of independent educational consulting and expect to meet membership requirements within two years, they may prefer to apply for associate membership. If you expect to meet the requirements of Professional membership within a 2-year period, the Associate membership is for you. Those who are transitioning into the field of independent consulting from a school or institutional position are welcome to apply for this level of membership as well. Associate members also need to have a minimum of one year of experience working with students and their families in educational placement admissions or counseling. Annual dues for an Associate membership are $300.
The requirements are as follows:
One year minimum experience in educational placement counseling or admissions. Or alternatively by completing IECA’s Summer Training Institute, a University of California College Counseling Certificate Program such as UCLA Extension, among others, or the UC Irvine Independent Educational Consultant Certificate Program.
Established, or be in the process of transitioning to, an independent educational consulting practice.
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
One professional reference. Suggestions for the reference include:
- College or independent school admissions officers
- Psychologists/counselors
- Other educational counseling professional with whom applicant has worked in the application process
- An IECA member
- Should not be a relative of the applicant

Student Membership
Graduate-level students studying educational placement counseling or a related field, who are not yet advising students, have not yet established an independent educational consulting practice, and who do not yet qualify for another membership category in the association should apply for Student membership. Annual payment of $140 should be made upon acceptance, and in the years to follow.
The requirements are as follows:
- A current resumé of professional experiences.
- Proof of current enrollment in a minimum of two courses (invoice, recent transcripts or current grade report is acceptable), or alternatively, proof of current enrollment in at least one course and a minimum of one additional course already completed.
The Growing Need for Independent Educational Consultants
The demand for independent educational consultants is on the rise. Yes, and growing rapidly. In 2010, it was estimated that there were about 1,500 full-time IECs nationwide. There were approximately 150 international IECs and another 4,000 part-time consultants, working in counseling or admissions for an institution during the day. By 2015, there were approximately 3,500 full-time IECs nationwide, 350 international IECs, and 5,000 part-timers. There are a number of reasons for this increased need:
- Increased confusion over who is admitted to college: A generation ago, most people felt that they could guess who got in, based on test scores and GPAs.
- Increased cost of education: The fees for private secondary school, special schools, and all colleges-public and private-have never been higher, with costs growing at twice the rate of inflation. Some private colleges can cost a family more than $250,000 over four years and some residential secondary schools can cost more than $60,000 a year.
- Overworked school counselors: In parts of the United States, public school counselors struggle with caseloads of 600 -1,000 students! Many handle behavior, academic, and social issues, as well as college counseling. Such numbers are three to four times the recommended ratios, limiting the impact and effectiveness of hard-working, but overburdened counselors.
- Students with unique needs: “Gifted” students and students with learning differences have unique needs. This is even true for gifted artists and athletes.
Dispelling Misconceptions about IECs
An oft-repeated misperception is that independent educational consulting primarily serves the needs of wealthy families. A recent survey conducted by IECA shows the typical client to be attending a public school in the suburbs of a big city with family income between $75,000 and $100,000. Far from wealthy, such families are generally identified as professional class. IECA members work with all levels of students, regardless of their GPA. There is a specialty designation in IECA for IECs who assist in placing students who act out behaviorally, abuse drugs or the internet, or experience significant emotional impairment. Another misconception is that IECs "package" students. No! IECA members believe that the student is in charge of the application process, and all materials should be the result of the student’s own work. IECA members work with students to help them develop a realistic list of schools to apply to and guide them during the process. IECA members are expressly forbidden from writing or heavily editing a student’s essay.
IECA Foundation
The IECA Foundation has been in operation for over 20 years. The grants normally range between $2500 and $5000 and are awarded to non-profits and educational institutions. These organizations must apply for the grant and outline the full proposal in how they plan to use that money.

The Impact of IECs
In a college search, the admission staff rarely knows that an IECA member consultant was involved. Because an IEC’s primary role is exploring great choices for the student’s particular needs and preferences, the application comes directly from the student. In many schools, colleges, and programs, an increasing number of admission representatives want to know if a candidate worked with an IECA member as this assures them that care and thought were given in consideration of their institution as a good match. According to a survey of IECs, an average of 65% of their clients chose a private college, compared to the national average of just over 20%.
The Value of Ethical Guidance
Providing a student with the best educational guidance is a notable goal for any IEC, but it is a difficult one. Often, it may be difficult for a parent to find the right IEC for their child’s needs and an IEC may need additional resources to ensure that their services are up-to-date and accurate. Luckily, there is a great organization that aims to “open doors” for IECs.
