Exploring the Hutton Honors Scholarship at Indiana University Bloomington

The Hutton Honors College (HHC) at Indiana University Bloomington offers a variety of opportunities for high-achieving students, including the prestigious Hutton Honors Scholarship and the Hutton International Experiences Program (HIEP) Grant. This article delves into the requirements, eligibility, and benefits associated with these programs.

Hutton Honors Scholars: A Selective Distinction

A select group of Hutton Honors College students are recognized as Hutton Honors Scholars, receiving a renewable scholarship. These scholarships are limited in number and extremely selective, awarded based on academic achievements and the potential for success in a highly interdisciplinary curriculum, as demonstrated through admission application materials.

Requirements and Benefits for Hutton Honors Scholars

Hutton Honors Scholars are required to complete the Hutton Honors Notation and are encouraged to live in an Honors Residential Community. They also receive priority for honors seminars, Notation gateway courses, and advising appointments.

Evaluation Criteria for the Scholarship

Evaluators consider all aspects of an application, placing the greatest emphasis on grades earned in academic courses, performance in honors, dual-credit, International Baccalaureate, and Advanced Placement courses, extracurricular activities, and other achievements.

Additional Scholarship Opportunities at IU Bloomington

The Office of Scholarships at IU Bloomington connects students with a wide range of scholarship opportunities. First-year applicants who submit their complete application for admission before the November 1 early action (non-binding) deadline will be considered for IU academic scholarships. There is no additional application for these scholarships.

The Hutton International Experiences Program (HIEP) Grant

The Hutton Honors College is the home of the Edward L. Hutton International Experiences Program (HIEP), which offers a scholarship and grant program for high-achieving IU-Bloomington undergraduate students seeking funding to go abroad for an academic reason. Foreign study is considered one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences during an undergraduate career at IU Bloomington.

Opportunities Supported by HIEP

HIEP can assist with funding for:

  • Study Abroad
  • Overseas Research
  • International Internships
  • Student Teaching in Another Country
  • Volunteer Service Abroad
  • Other Academic Interests Abroad

Eligibility Requirements for the HIEP Grant

HIEP Grant funding is open to any full-time undergraduate student at IU Bloomington and is made on a competitive basis. In general, any IU-Bloomington undergraduate student with a cumulative GPA of 3.40 or major GPA of 3.70 may apply.

To be eligible for HIEP funding, students must fulfill all of the following prerequisites:

  1. Must be a full-time IU Bloomington undergraduate student. (Note: students do not have to be members of the Hutton Honors College to apply for HIEP funding.)
  2. Must have completed at least one full semester (12 credits) of graded undergraduate coursework at IU Bloomington.
  3. Must have either a cumulative 3.40 GPA or a major GPA of 3.70 in their undergraduate coursework.
  4. Must complete all travels before their official IU graduation date. (Note: students can consult their advisor and/or the Registrar about pushing back their graduation date in order to be eligible for HIEP funding.)

  • HIEP Grant funding is made to individual students on a merit basis.
  • Programs in countries on the Department of State's Travel Warning List are not eligible, with an exception for programs vetted and approved by OSAC (IU's Overseas Study Advisory Council).
  • Students who have previously received HIEP funding are not eligible, as all HIEP awards are one-time-only.
  • Students with major IU scholarships that specifically include funding for an overseas study experience are not eligible. This includes Robbins/Hutton Scholarship Fund recipients through LAMP (note: LAMP students cannot receive the HIEP Grant and the Robbins/Hutton Scholarship concurrently) and Kelley Scholars Program participants (note: Kelley Scholars cannot receive HIEP Grants for short-term study tour programs, such as BUS-X272, but may receive funding for other programs).
  • Participants of Hutton Honors Study Abroad programs are ineligible to apply for HIEP Grant funding for those experiences.

Alternative Funding Opportunities

If a student is not eligible for the HIEP Grant, they can consider applying for other grants offered through the Hutton Honors College.
