Unlocking Human Energy: A Comprehensive Guide to Understanding and Managing Your Inner Power
Our body, mind, emotions, and spirit form an intricate and integrated energy system. This system, while remarkably impressive, often struggles to keep pace with the demands of modern life. Exploring, learning, and acquiring effective tools to enhance our energy levels is crucial. The choices we make each day profoundly impact our human energy, either bolstering or hindering our aspirations and well-being.
The Essence of Human Energy
The unifying element that enables us to be human is the movement of energy. Scientific research and spiritual practices increasingly converge on the understanding that we are more than just biological bodies housing sentient minds. The whole human is body, mind, emotion and spirit. Our heart drives our human energy. Our heart-field is real, transmitting and receiving all day long. This understanding opens avenues for thriving in a constantly evolving world. Our energy capacity can be managed, grown and sustained for longer life, greater health and vitality, increased consciousness and clarity and superior presence in times of crises. Our emotions are a key determinant of our human energy.
Understanding the Science of Human Energy
For decades, scientists have studied the energy fields surrounding the human body. Initially, the existence of such fields was dismissed, but advancements in technology, particularly the development of sensitive instruments like the SQUID magnetometer, have provided concrete evidence of their presence. These instruments can detect the minute biomagnetic fields associated with physiological activities in the body.
It has long been known that activities of cells and tissues generate electrical fields that can be detected on the skin surface. But the laws of physics demand that any electrical current generates a corresponding magnetic field in the surrounding space. All tissues and organs produce specific magnetic pulsations, which have come to be known as biomagnetic fields. Mapping the magnetic fields in the space around the body often provides a more accurate indication of physiology and pathology than traditional electrical measurements.
Emotions: The Key to Unlocking Energy
Our emotions are intrinsically linked to our biology, mental processes, and spiritual connections. Our emotional range is perfectly adapted to thrive in the human experience. The range of emotions we experience can be placed on a continuum from heavy and depleting to lighter and renewing. The depleting emotions are those we have incorrectly been taught are to be avoided. They feel negative and bad, so we learn “don’t go there.”

The impact of emotions can either deplete or increase personal and group energy. Specific triggers and emotions experienced are uniquely personal. And yet, we all can learn both the language of emotions and the processes by which we can move to a more consciously competent way of choosing to shift the emotions triggered by any experience.
The Heart-Mind Connection
Our heart is at the center of how emotions regulate our psycho physiology. Whether we sense something from our environment, another person or within our being, emotions are triggered through our heart. Scientific research has been catching up with spiritual practices. Each of us has 40,000 neurons in our heart. The electromagnetic field of our heart extends at least 3 feet outward. We transmit and receive continuously through our heart-field. Our feeling heart is continually signaling our brain. One emotion experienced can launch up to 1,400 biochemical reactions and hormonal changes in our body. Those changes in our body can last up to 12 hours after the emotion is experienced. Through intelligent management of our heart-mind connection, we can manage our human energy quite effectively.
Becoming a Human Battery: Recharging Your Energy
Emotions are a key tool for managing our energy. Our heart is the doorway that is unlocked with that key. And with a more conscious heart, the next tool is for increasing our capacity to build and hold energy.
Establishing greater coherence between heart and mind can lead to renewed energy. That shift is the result of establishing greater coherence between heart and mind. Once that communication is restored and more in sync, then several avenues to increase energy are enabled. The analogy is a rechargeable battery. Simply plugging the rechargeable battery into a power source fills it back up to be re-used. Fortunately, we humans are rechargeable. And even better, we don’t have to let our energy reserves drain out to recharge.
Through an array of techniques that can easily be learned, we can establish higher and higher levels of coherence. HeartMath defined “coherence” as an optimal state in which our heart, mind and emotions are aligned and in sync. Our immune, hormonal and nervous systems function in a state of energetic coordination. This is when our natural mechanisms for increasing and efficiently regulating our energy reserves work fully to support health, vitality and even longevity.

Ask yourself:
- Am I able to instantly access my ability to raise my energy?
- When, where and why am I feeling depleted and drained?
- How am I charging my battery during the day… and at night?
Practical Steps to Increase Human Energy
Once these initial tools (emotions, heart-mind coherence and filling our battery) are learned to increase our energy, five natural steps open to us that enable greater integration of our entire human energy system:
- Pause: Breathe into our heart to activate our natural mechanism for building energy.
- Appreciate: Radiate that feeling within and outside our self.
- Listen: Intuition, intelligence and emotions are tools more readily available with increased energy.
- Connect: What are we transmitting and receiving through our heart-field?
- Choose: Improved health, decision-making, communication and relationships result from bringing all of us - our whole human being - to each day.
If you only do one thing as a result of reading this article, just take a very deep slower-than-usual breath paying special attention to the area of your heart. Put your hand on your heart and feel your chest rise. Then release your breath as slowly as you inhaled, allowing for a moment of recharge to lift your energy instantly.
The Role of Energy Balance in Health
It is critical for schools to emphasize physical activity, given the current epidemic of overweight children and obese adults in the United States. Energy imbalances over time produce weight loss or gain. When the body is in negative energy balance, which occurs when its energy (kilocalories or kcal) intake is less than its energy expenditure, it combusts body fat to yield kinetic or free energy to support metabolic functions and motion or work. Positive energy balance, which occurs when energy intake is greater than energy expenditure, usually results in potential energy being stored as fat. A small positive energy balance is necessary for youth to support healthy weight gain, which includes muscle tissue.
Measuring Energy Balance: Practical Activities
Several activities can be used to examine energy intake and expenditure. These activities are related to science content and standards on energy, experimental design, technology, problem solving, and personal and societal issues.

Energy Intake Activity: This activity involves computing and comparing the kcal in the same quantities of certain foods and calculating the kcal or energy density (per gram-kcal/g) for each food. Students investigate which of several foods provides the most kcal/g. The USDA nutrient database allows the user to modify the mass (g) for each food being examined.
Energy Expenditure Activity: This activity involves computing and comparing energy-expenditure values of activities listed in the Compendium of Physical Activities Tracking Guide. The MET concept, which is the approximate kcal expenditure by adults per kg of body weight per hr (kcal/kg/hr), is introduced. Students calculate the energy expenditure from MET values using sample body weights and durations of engagement, holding body weight and engagement constant for some of the activities to facilitate comparisons.
Using Pedometers to Understand Energy Expenditure
Pedometers are an evolving technological innovation used by researchers to measure physical activity and develop strategies for increasing physical activity. They also allow for collaboration with health and physical education teachers in the national thrust to increase physical activity opportunities and levels for youth. Pedometer activities also connect to the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics for measurement (e.g., accuracy, precision, unit analysis), data analysis (variables, types of data, basic statistics), problem solving, and representation.
Before conducting investigations with pedometers, it is important to become familiar with their functions. All brands of pedometers record and report steps taken while walking (step-count data). Some also track time spent walking and calculate kcal expenditure using an entered body weight.
Pedometer Investigations: Examples
- Relation Correlation: Students identify research questions and conduct an experiment investigating the relationships between individuals’ heights and their step counts from walking a predetermined distance at normal pace. This activity introduces the concept of a relationship between two variables: direct, inverse, or no relationship.
Key Concepts in Experimental Design
When conducting these investigations, it is important to review the different types of variables:
- Independent Variable (IV): The variable that investigators intentionally change or manipulate.
- Dependent Variable (DV): The variable that may or may not be impacted by changes in the independent variable.
- Constant Variable (CV): Also known as the control variable, this variable is held constant so all conditions remain the same except for changes in the independent variable.
The Broader Perspective: Connecting Mind, Body, and Spirit
One of the leading problems in the health space, really in life, is how we segment everything into specific parts or systems. We separate our work life from our home life and health from our spiritual life. Even within the body, you have endless systems you work to fix. Healing requires you to understand no matter how unique each is, they are all connected.
Energy is in everything and flowing out of everything. As quantum physics states, before matter, there is energy. The frequency or vibration of energy determines what type of matter. You have energy inside your body as well as outside that surrounds you. The purpose of your energy field is to interact with all other energy (some consider your energy field the sixth sense) and radiate light. Your energy field is reacting to and interacting with all other life energies.
Like all things in life, the goal of the body is to achieve a state of balance, and energy is one of the main metrics it uses to reach this balance. A great example of the movement of energy is the transfer of weather patterns from a high-pressure to a low-pressure pattern. The shift happens to achieve balance. The same happens inside your body.
The Impact of Emotions on the Energy Field
Not surprisingly, the shape and color of your energy field change how you feel. A state of stress causes your energy field to shrink and become distorted. It appears hollow. Under positive emotion, the area becomes more vibrant and whole. Long before disease manifests in the physical, it shows in the energy field.
Healing requires a healthy flow of energy. It’s energy that changes the function of every cell inside your body for good or bad. When we live in states of toxic stress, worry, fear, and a whole range of negative emotions, we influence our physiological and psycho-emotional states, causing our energetic field to shrink.
The Stream Analogy
Arguably everything you do in life is emotional, and this emotion, for good or bad, creates the outcome of your life. The different frequencies of emotion interact with your internal frequency changing the harmony and light you project.
Think of your energy field as a barrier protecting the stream. The smaller the energy field is, the closer the negative emotions can get to the stream, allowing life to throw rocks in your stream and hit every time. That is the goal.
Raising Your Emotional Frequency
Self-awareness is your greatest tool in healing because you can’t change what you don’t understand. Most practices that shift your energy also shift your emotion into higher frequency states. Ironically, most of these are spiritual practices. This isn’t another to-do list. But like all things in health, the goal is not to fix but to harmonize or create balance. In the process, you will emit more light. Pick one or two things you can do daily to boost your energy. Naturally, this will lead to more discipline and motivation for more energy-filling behavior.
Modeling Future Conditions: The Role of CO2
It is important that students see that even when CO2 emissions stay constant, the concentration of atmospheric CO2 continues to increase and thus temperature continues to increase. Drastic reductions in CO2 emissions over a short period of time would be nearly impossible to accomplish given our current global society.
