Standard Diploma Requirements: The Foundation for Graduation
To earn a standard high school diploma in Miami-Dade County, students must fulfill several key requirements:
- Credit Accumulation: Students must earn a minimum of 24 credits in specified subject areas. These credits must be earned with a cumulative unweighted grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or above. Credits must have been earned in all required courses.
- Passing the Grade 10 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) SSS: Successfully passing the Grade 10 FCAT SSS is a prerequisite for graduation.

Subject-Specific Requirements
The 24 credits required for graduation are distributed across various subject areas:
- Mathematics: The graduation requirement for mathematics includes specific course levels, excluding Informal Geometry. (regular or honors) should be completed by the end of grade 9.
- Science: Students must complete I and two additional science courses. These courses must include a substantial laboratory component and may include Biology Technology, and/or Anatomy & Physiology.
- English: APPLIED TECH. requirement. by the end of grade 11.
- Physical Science: (regular or honors) or Physical Science by the end of grade 11.
- Physical Education: Students must complete a physical education semester course In the Florida Course Code Directory. Diploma Options in Miami-Dade County
Florida students entering grade nine may choose from one of five options to earn a standard diploma. In addition to the five options available for students to earn a standard diploma listed above, Rule 6A-1.09963, Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.), High School Graduation Requirements for Students with Disabilities, outlines two additional options that students with disabilities may complete. The Miami-Dade County School Board provides for the awarding of a standard diploma, a certificate of completion, a special diploma, or a special certificate of completion.
Standard Diploma: Awarded to students who meet all the aforementioned requirements, including credit accumulation, GPA, passing FCAT SSS, community service, and computer literacy. The purpose of the standard diploma is to certify that the student has met all local and state standards for graduation. An exceptional education student will be awarded a standard diploma if all of the criteria for a standard diploma have been met by that student.
Superintendent's Diploma of Distinction: This prestigious diploma is awarded to students who pursue an academically rigorous course of study. The requirements include at least four honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and/or International Studies courses; and completion of 75 hours of community service, which includes identification of a social problem of interest, development of a plan for personal involvement in addressing the problem and, through papers and other presentations, evaluate, and reflect upon the experience. All students must earn a 3.5 GPA (weighted scale) with no final grade less than a "C."
Certificate of Completion: A student who has met all requirements for graduation except passing the HSCT or Grade 10 FCAT, or earning the GPA required for graduation shall be awarded certificate of completion. Students must show college and career readiness in order to graduate from high school. There are three different pathways to demonstrate college and career readiness. Students earn a cumulative passing score of 18 points, using seven end-of-course state tests. Students earn 12 points through a State Board of Education-approved, industry-recognized credential or group of credentials in a single career field and achieve a workforce readiness score on the WorkKeys assessment. Students earn “remediation-free” scores in English language arts and mathematics on a nationally recognized college admission exam.

An equivalent of a high diploma, such as a General Educational Development (GED) diploma is acceptable if the diploma is recognized by the department of education of the state from which it was issued. A state certificate is acceptable if received by a student after the student has passed a state-authorized examination that the state recognizes as the equivalent of a high school diploma, in accordance to the Code of Federal Regulation 600.2.
