HBCU Week NFL Scholarship: Empowering the Next Generation
The National Football League (NFL) has a longstanding commitment to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The NFL has launched several initiatives aimed at strengthening its partnership with these institutions and providing opportunities for HBCU students. Among these initiatives is the Black College Football Hall of Fame HBCU Scholarship Fund.
Black College Football Hall of Fame HBCU Scholarship Fund
The Black College Football Hall of Fame HBCU Scholarship Fund aims to support students who contribute to HBCU football programs behind the scenes. This includes students involved in medical, equipment, video, and internship roles. Doug Williams, a co-founder, trustee, and inductee of the Black College Football Hall of Fame, emphasized that the scholarship will benefit those students who assist behind the scenes at HBCU football programs. James “Shack” Harris, also a co-founder, trustee, and inductee, added that the scholarship fund was made possible by the success of the Black College Football … The Road to Equality program.
Application Process and Requirements
HBCU students can apply for the scholarship through an online portal. The application must be completed and submitted by February 17th. Applicants must provide a verifiable high school transcript, subject to authentication, and proof of acceptance at an HBCU. Acceptance letters can be submitted through April 11th, 2025, but all other application materials must be submitted by February 17th, 2025.
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States.
- Have completed high school with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted).
- Be entering their freshman year of college.
- Attend an HBCU for the entirety of their college education.
- Demonstrate financial need.
The scholarship can be used for tuition, room, and board. Students applying for the scholarship are required to disclose any potential conflict of interest prior to the selection process.

Scholarship Administration
The HBCU Week Foundation will oversee the process of receiving and reviewing applications, including the identification of external participants for the scholarship Selection Committee. The Committee will review qualitative application details and determine the candidates who best fit the scholarship criteria. Scholars with the highest scores will be chosen as recipients, based on the number of scholarships available. The HBCU Week Foundation will administer funding of scholarships to each of the Universities.
Other NFL Initiatives Supporting HBCUs
In addition to the Black College Football Hall of Fame HBCU Scholarship Fund, the NFL has launched several other initiatives to support HBCUs and their students. These include:
Strength of HBCUs
Launched in May 2016, Strength of HBCUs is a partnership between the NFL and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). This initiative aims to strengthen the ongoing partnership between the NFL and HBCUs.
Future Leaders in Football Forum
The Future Leaders in Football Forum brings together students from across the country with the objective of inspiring, developing, and connecting students with industry professionals and NFL partners. Select participants interested in careers in football are provided with a stipend to work with their institution’s football program in athletic training, scouting/recruiting, football operations, equipment, and video. Highly evaluated participants will be given an opportunity to attend an NFL tentpole event and will be placed in the pipeline for future opportunities at the league. Fellows are selected through their HBCU conferences and work for the duration of the football season.
Campus Connection
The NFL's Campus Connection program is a commitment to celebrating the impact HBCUs have had on football. In partnership with Amazon, students will join professionals from AWS and the NFL to game plan for their future. Students from the following institutions are invited to attend the AWS x NFL Homecoming Kickoff: Allen University, Benedict College, Claflin University, Clinton College, Denmark Technical College, Morris College, South Carolina State University, and Vorhees College.

HBCU Experienceships
The HBCU Experienceships were launched by the NFL Football Operations department to connect, develop, and provide collegiate candidates interested in establishing a career in sports and entertainment with opportunities to learn about the business through practical learning and shadowing experiences.
NFL Social Justice Town Hall
The NFL Social Justice Town Hall is hosted during select NFL tentpole events. The town halls are open to all professional athletes, educators, thought leaders, seasoned businesspeople, and rising entrepreneurs and provide space for all to share their thoughts, educate others, and plan the future that we want to see.
NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative
The collaboration provides medical students at 21 medical schools with the opportunity to complete a clinical rotation with NFL club medical staff.
Madden NFL 24 x HBCU Tournament
The tournament is available to students to put their Madden skills to work by competing in one of several online qualifiers offered or students can submit a video essay regarding why they should be selected. Finalists are also exposed to the business of sports through professional development sessions and practical learning and job shadowing experiences at an NFL tentpole event.
Additional Scholarship Opportunities
While the NFL and HBCU-specific scholarships are valuable resources, students should also explore other scholarship opportunities. Some examples include:
