GPA Requirements for First-Year Students

High School Course Requirements
Applicants must successfully complete 15 high school subject requirements. These include:
- Four years of English
- Three years of mathematics
- Three years of science
- Three years of social studies
- Two years of one foreign language
An additional unit of advanced mathematics and science is also recommended. Take two years of high school-level foreign/secondary language and earn an average of C- or better in each year. Students applying without meeting this requirement may be selected for admission.
GPA Expectations
Ohio State University is known to be quite selective. Typically, successful applicants have a high school GPA of around 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. However, the average GPA of admitted students tends to be much higher, usually in the range of 3.7 to 4.3.
Weighted GPA
Remember, OSU uses a weighted scale, so make sure to consider that when comparing your GPA. This means that AP and Honors classes hold more weight, so a B in an AP class could be equivalent to or better than an A in a standard track class.
Graduates of Non-Standard High Schools and Home-Schooled Students

Students Who Take the GED Test
Students who take the GED test in the 1996-97 school year and later must pass two years of foreign language prior to admission or an approved exception to meet OSU’s foreign language requirement for admission. Foreign language taken at an accredited high school does not qualify.
GPA Requirements for Transfer Students
If you are an Ohio resident, you may apply for admission to a regional campus. If, at the time of application, you have earned at least a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) on college course work completed after high school graduation, we will review your academic performance in college to determine your eligibility for admission.

Transferable Credits
Students with fewer than 24 graded transferable quarter hours will be considered on the basis of their high school records and test scores, and must have a 2.25 GPA on all collegiate work attempted.
Math and Writing Proficiency
A strong transfer application typically includes your completion of a college-level writing equivalent to WR 121(English Composition) with C- or higher and a college-level math equivalent to MTH 111z or MTH 105 with a C- or higher. If you're admitted to OSU without a college-level mathematics or college-level writing course, you must complete those at OSU within their first 45 credits.

Transfer Credit Policies
OSU may accept college-level credit from regionally accredited institutions toward a baccalaureate degree. Acceptable transfer credits are those which are academic in nature, college-level, and attempted/awarded at domestic institutions accredited by a regional accrediting body. Credits earned in vocational/technical and/or professional continuing education programs are generally not accepted. Remedial courses are not considered transferable credits.

Submitting Scores
Students must send their official test scores to OSU. Ohio State University hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Ohio State University will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students.
SAT Score Ranges
The 25th percentile SAT score is 1280, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1430. Therefore, if your SAT score is currently below a 1360, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it.
ACT Score Ranges
The average ACT score at Ohio State University is 29. The 25th percentile ACT score is 26, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 32. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 29 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can.

Application Deadlines and Fees
The application and fee must be submitted electronically by the respective deadlines. Applicants may apply online. Applicants are required to use a valid Visa, MasterCard, or Discover credit card to pay the $75 nonrefundable application fee. Undergraduate applicants are asked to select a major in their application. The University Exploratory Studies Program is a choice available to undergraduates who are undecided about a major.

University Exploratory Studies Program
The University Exploratory Studies Program is a choice available to undergraduates who are undecided about a major.
Engineering Direct Admission
OSU will provide direct admission into an Engineering degree if the applicant is considered to have satisfied the pre-calculus requirement. This determination is based on a review of both completed coursework shown on available transcripts and self-reported courses that are in progress or planned for later in the school year. A student with a C- or better in a Pre-Calculus or Calculus course, or who is registered or planning to take Pre-Calculus or Calculus at the time of admission, will be deemed as satisfying the pre-calculus requirement and may be admitted to their Engineering major of choice.
Applicants that have taken college Math coursework will be deemed as satisfying the pre-calculus requirement if they have taken or are taking the equivalent of OSU’s MTH 111Z and MTH 112Z or higher.
Postbaccalaureate Admission
Students who would like to earn a subsequent undergraduate degree from OSU may apply for degree seeking postbaccalaureate admission through the Office of Admissions. Postbaccalaureate applicants are asked to select a major in the application and must submit official transcripts of all college work by the application deadline. 2.25 accumulated GPA requirements. Please note that academic performance is not the sole criterion for admission to the university. You cannot earn a postbaccalaureate degree in the same field in which you earned your original degree.
Nondegree Enrollment
Nondegree enrollment status is designed for students who want to take courses but do not want to pursue a degree. In some instances, nondegree students might not meet regular admission requirements. Nondegree students are part-time students who are expected to enroll in no more than 8 credits a term. Nondegree enrollment status requires no formal admission process and has no requirements for entrance. Nondegree applications should be submitted electronically. Approval is granted for a specific term. Nondegree students who wish to seek full admission and pursue a degree must do so by submitting an undergraduate, postbaccalaureate or graduate application for admission. In all cases, an admission application fee is required. Successful enrollment as a nondegree student does not guarantee regular admission.
Admission Appeals
Students not selected for regular admission may appeal via the appeals process. Appeal admission decisions will be determined by the Undergraduate Admissions Committee. In addition to regular admission requirements, students participating in the appeals process will be asked to provide additional materials for consideration. Applicants who are denied admission may be eligible to appeal that decision, and appeals will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit
Oregon State University awards ungraded credit for achievement on certain College Board Advanced Placement (AP) examinations. Oregon State recognizes IB achievement by awarding credit to students who score 5 or above on standard and higher level IB exams. Sophomore Standing, and IB Scholarships are available. Students must send their official test scores to OSU.
Military Credit
Students are recommended to seek advice from their Academic Advisor prior to transferring in their Military Credits. Oregon State University grants up to 45 credits for military education as recommended by the American Council on Education's (ACE) Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. This is in accordance with transfer credit policies at Oregon State University.
