Understanding Genie Garage Door Openers
Genie offers a diverse range of garage door openers, each with its own unique features and programming requirements. Here's a look at some common types:
- Screw Drive Openers: These openers use a threaded steel rod to raise and lower the garage door. They are reliable, durable, and require less maintenance than other types. This opener is ideal for heavy garage doors and offers a smooth operation.
- Chain Drive Garage Door Openers: These operate by using a metal chain to lift and lower the door. They are strong and affordable, but can be noisier than other openers. Perfect for heavy garage doors, chain drive openers are durable and reliable.
- Belt Drive Garage Door Openers: These rely on a rubber belt to smoothly open and close the door. Known for their quiet operation, they are ideal for homes where noise is a concern.
- Direct Drive Openers: These feature a motor that moves the garage door directly, without chains or belts. They are quiet, smooth, and require less maintenance.
Essential Tools for Programming
Before you begin programming your Genie garage door opener, make sure you have the following items:
- Remote Control: You will need the remote control that originally came with your Genie garage door opener, or a replacement remote if necessary, to complete the programming process. This remote is essential to pair with your garage door opener.
- Wall-Mounted Keypad (if applicable): If your Genie opener comes with a wall-mounted keypad, you’ll need it handy during programming. The keypad allows you to enter codes that can be used to operate the garage door.
- Sturdy Ladder: A sturdy ladder is a must-have for safely reaching the Genie garage door opener’s control panel, typically mounted above the garage door. The ladder will allow you to comfortably access the buttons and settings needed for programming.

Programming Your Genie Garage Door Opener
Here are the general steps to program your Genie garage door opener:
- Locate the "Learn" Button: The first step in programming your Genie garage door opener is to locate the “Learn” button. This button is usually found on the back or side of the motor unit, above the garage door. For garage door openers, be sure to check under the light covers. For commercial or gate openers, this button may be on the circuit board of the opener. In some cases, this button could also be on an external receiver that is mounted on or nearby the product.
- Activate Programming Mode: Once you’ve located the Learn button, press and release it. This action puts your Genie opener into programming mode, making it ready to sync with your remote control or wall-mounted keypad. After pressing this button once, a red indicator light located next to the button will start blinking red for 30 seconds.

Hold the button until you see the opener’s lights blink or hear the motor make a clicking sound. Note: While programming remote buttons, stand at least 5 feet away from the opener. Slowly press and release the remote button of your choice two times. Press and release the same button a third time and door will open or close. It is possible to press the remote button too quickly or lightly.

Additional Programming Tips for Older Models
For Genie of Fairview models (4024, 3024, 4042, 3042, 4022, 3022, and 4046, 3064, 4062, 3062, 2564, 2562):
- Gently press and release the radio receiver Learn Code button on the Genie of Fairview motor head in your garage. This small, black, usually unmarked button is often located behind the light cover on the motor head and is nearest the 8 inch floppy antenna wire protruding from the head.
- After pressing this button once, a red indicator light located next to the button will start blinking red for 30 seconds.
- The long purple LED light will start to blink purple.
- While the long LED is blinking, hold the remote 4 or 5 feet away and press 3, 4 or 5 times, until the door activates. Your remote is programmed.
- To erase all Intellicode remotes and wireless keyless entry: gently hold down on the learn button until the red indicator light stops blinking.
For other older models:
- Press and hold down on the square button of your Genie of Fairview system until the round blue LED comes on, then release the button. The blue light should stay lit.
- Press the square button once more and release.
- To unlock the programming feature use a remote that already operates the unit and press it only once.
- Hold the new remote 4 or 5 feet away and press 3, 4 or 5 times slowly, until the door activates.
These remotes work by matching the settings on the internal code switches with the radio receiver on the garage ceiling. Look for the floppy 8 inch floppy antenna wire for the location of the radio control receiver. The GT90 series would only show the bottom 12 numbers. On the GT912 diagram the wide switch to the right is based on whether your radio receiver in the garage is a 9 switch or 12 switch. If a 9 switch move this wide switch up for 9 and only follow the top nine numbers to match the receiver switches.
